^^^^ amazingly, oh man this is gonna so blow your mind . . . some people, aren't like you.
I know people, my brother for instance, whose self-worth is defined by his ability to attract and retain friends. Does this mean he's a shallow, vapid waste of carbon based molecules? No. But it does mean that he gets extremely depressed when he's alone.
So, while I'm sure you feel extremely special, it is not in the greater interest of society to base all psychological analysis on a StillFuchsia centric spectrum and your anecdotal tidbits, while utterly fascinating to you, don't really change the definitions of extroversion and introversion.

You need to work on this "reading" thing.
I'm not basing this on ME, I was largely basing this on ActionPants, actually. The two things don't have to be linked, regardless. I'm not trying to change the definitions of either of the terms, but they DO NOT fundamentally mean your self-esteem is one way or the other. I didn't say extroverts were a waste of carbon: I'm an extrovert for fuck's sake. I don't know where you're pulling these ideas about what I said out of your ass, but fuck off.

a) there's a bit of a difference between extraversion in the colloquial sense, and extraversion in the psychological sense
b) there are two derivatives of self-esteem: self-respect and respect from others
it only makes sense that because extraverts are more outwardly directed, that they would typically place a greater emphasis on respect from others, but it is not necessary merely because someone is extraverted.

I don't know why he got so pissy. I agree that most people are somewhere between extroverts and introverts. But self-worth is a largely internalized thing based on how you perceive/believe yourself and those around you, not in a "oh, you like being around people, you must need their approval" or "oh, you don't like being around people, you must get your esteem from your own internalizations" way. Sure, there are plenty of people who'd fit in both of those categories, but they're not the only options.

I'm a total introvert but I usually need to be around people to be happy. I'm usually uncomfortable with groups unless at least one person I already know is around, though.

Do people really give a fuck about what some random Joe Q Stranger has to say? You can't just walk up to somebody and start talking to them, that requires that you both at least know each other or trust each other or something. I'm willing to bet that most people would tell that stranger to piss off, or at least feel uncomfortable having somebody they've never met before acting like they're buddy-buddy enough to be chatting. It's a complete mystery to me how people can even meet other people, let alone get to know them. Perhaps that's an indicator of how long I've lived in isolation from others, but I just don't see it happening, whether it's some cute girl or some random asshole who I doubt I'll ever bump into agai" |
You don't "walk up". You take the opportunities that present themselves. Most of the time. I'm in a class this semester where groupwork is 50% of the grade Before groups were assigned, I leaned over to the chick next to me, who I'd never seen before in my life, and made a snide comment about something in the lecture.
...Now we get along great, and the prof authorized a group of two when he had been insisting on groups of four. Even if we revert to just being friendly after this, and not 'friends' - we didn't need anything personal in common.
A lot of it is entirely situational. If you're not going out in public and interacting with people (say, riding the wolfline, going and getting coffee at Global Village, going to class, grocery shopping, taking your dog to the park...), then no, opportunities will never be there, and you would have to walk up to someone, and be totally random and have them going WTF.
I mean, shit, while this granny at the register at petsmart was paying with fucking coins for a $20+ purchase, the woman behind me and I talked about dogs, because she had an ADORABLE cocker, and saying 'oh my god your dog is adorable' was all that was needed. She was kinda odd, though - in the crazy cat lady way. On my way out, this guy was walking in with a snake around his neck, and I asked if I could pet her, and we chatted, and he told me how the snake come to be his (a rescue).
Probably, you're making yourself seem aloof and inaccessible without even realizing it. Without that, more strangers would probably engage you in casual conversation.]10/1/2007 10:18:31 AM |

OK, I've got a confession, to get this thread back on track: Even though she swears that I'm far and above her best lay ever, it will always bother me that my fiancee has had sex with some 25 people (her estimate) in the last 12 years. When you subtract her previous 6-year relationship (which she stayed in because she had given up on finding a really good guy), that's an average of 4 people a year. It will also always bother me that Christmas is the anniversary of her first time at age 15. I don't know whether that fact crosses her mind every Christmas, but a girl doesn't just forget a thing like that. It's my own fault for knowing all this because I asked about her past. Attention, guys: don't ever ask about your girlfriend's sexual history, you're better off not knowing. 10/1/2007 2:47:38 PM |
