We want dbs who can just cover the flats and sit on short routes while focusing on getting off blocks and stopping the run in the modern game. Think about them more as SS and not CB in the system we want to run.
5 "dbs" (2Cb 2SS/LB 1FS)
2 "lbs" (2LB/SS)
4 "DLs" (2DT 2DE/LB)
Its all about hybrid positions, interchangable parts and depth for lots of substitutions and fast pace. 12/8/2015 1:50:13 PM |

^BC whatever the "scheme" is, it sure didnt work this year. I dont consider myself to be very knowledge about coverage schemes (I was a lineman) but I cant understand how we got gashed this year over and over and never adjusted our safety coverages or LB responsibilities. Either our defensive play calling was obvious and the other teams could recognize it quickly and take advantage or we were consistently exploitable and the teams knew that from kickoff. 12/8/2015 2:14:37 PM |

Hate the 4-2-5.
It's suppose to counter the spread by using more DBs but not expose you to the run by having the extra S/LB to help in run support if necessary.
Problem is power-running teams(think BC last year) just ran the ball down our throat. Then teams with more speed than us just abuse our extra DB trying to play coverage.
The 4-2-5 was the same defense UNC ran last year, and they switched to 4-3 this year. Really wish we'd adjust back, we just can't land the type of LBs we need pitching this 4-2-5 crap to recruits. Have to keep trying to find these tweener athletes that aren't quite fast enough to be safeties but aren't quite big enough to be LBs. 12/8/2015 3:25:23 PM |

i thought - and may be wrong - that one of the reasons for the 4-2-5 for our staff was lack of depth at LB. is that not the case? 12/8/2015 3:26:41 PM |

Bullshit. You live in a vacuum. Compare the longevity of our coaching tenures to other power five schools who also endure year after year of mediocrity.
Bitching about coaches (which every school does) and running them off are two separate things.

If you're going to run something normal or bland, then it just comes down to having better talent than the other team. We've already established that we aren't going to do that in this division. Our wild schemes means that teams will always have to adjust to our style and we can dictate how the game goes. IF you can dictate how the other team plays, your players will be more comfortable and be able to make plays.
Everyone is used to playing against a 4-3. Different is good.12/8/2015 5:16:05 PM |

It doesn't really make a difference if you have a guy called a big db who runs a 4.9 playing the spot of a guy called a small lb who runs the same speed. Its just a matter of play-calling, planning and organization. 12/9/2015 1:10:10 PM |

yeah sounds like it's inevitable that he'll commit here...just not official yet.
4* WR. offers from SCar (obviously), UNC, WV, and some smaller schools.
edit to add: assuming this does happen, i'm guessing that means overton is pretty much a lock for Clemson. seems like folks have been saying he was Clemson lean for a while now anyways.

Depends really. The only reason Overton wanted to come here was lack of existing play-makers at WR and a chance to start early. If Overton thinks he is better than Harmon, it wouldn't really effect his decision.
We were still a long-shot to land Overton, but from what I've read, I doubt he's scared to compete with Harmon. Harmon sounds like a true possession WR, think Overton has more upside. 12/10/2015 2:59:59 PM |

Overton is better than Harmon. We don't have anyone to scare him off. Pretty much the only reason he would come to State is so that he could start from day one and we could showcase him. Clemson is loaded with WRs.
So yes...Overton is still in play and still very much a possibility. 12/10/2015 3:33:33 PM |

yeah, i didn't mean Overton was scared to compete. I meant that our staff had maybe started pursuing other guys more aggressively if they felt they were out of the running for Overton. But that's just a guess on my part. Maybe it has nothing to do with Overton at all.

Guess the coaches are expecting some attrition, either from current commits or current players, because we aren't slowing down in recruiting.
Still would accept Lawrence, Overton, and Moss I believe without thinking twice. Also still have Harmon close to committing and Troy Pride visiting this weekend.
Will be interesting to see how this class shakes out. Even splitting Overton and Lawrence with Clemson would be great for us, but pulling both would be a major win for Doeren and Staff. 12/11/2015 7:35:39 AM |
