^^ I think it's worth it if you do a lot of home recording. I prefer headphones to monitors for various reasons, not least of which being size and feedback. 3/12/2005 12:25:46 AM |

I think you can get sound that's more or less as good as the 700's for a good bit cheaper out of AKG's ect. I think where the 700's shine is durability and flexibility, which is what dj's need them for. 3/12/2005 1:07:29 PM |

I still do a lot of my mastering on headphones, I think using both is the best thing to do, especially if you have a home studio. Even with really good near-field monitors its kinda tough to really hear some of the nuances, and it's a lot easier to hear panning, phasing, delay and reverb on headphones. However monitors have their advantages too, namely that what your end users are going to be hearing is going to be through speakers and it really lets you take advantage another dimension other than just left and right. 3/13/2005 1:44:36 AM |

I play a 79 Washburn Falcon through a Peavey head I got dumpster diving at Mars. I've got a Crate cabinet I got for free, but I put four 12" Celestion Rockets in it when they were on clearance for $29.99 each a while back. Oh yeah, and a DOD Corrosion distortion pedal I got on clearance at Guitar Center a few years ago. Total cost for it all was ~$350. It's loud as fuck and sounds great. 3/13/2005 2:15:18 AM |

headphones exaggerate the stereo image, so if it sounds 'right' on headphones, you'll lose some imaging when using speakers. if youre used to switching back and forth though, you can counter this by mixing the image exaggerated on the phones, but then that just adds that much more guess work to it.
good monitors have a far flatter freq response so theyre a much better reference for mixing. even really good headphones wont be as flat as just decent monitors. a lot of headphones (especially a lot of Sony) have hyped bass and treble which is good for DJs and such, but no good for mixing.
you can hear anything on good monitors that you can on good headphones and more assuming the room is quiet and you have em turned up to a proper volume.
monitors also give you a better representation of the average listening experience, two speakers in a room. its important to emulate this when playing w/ all your time delay effects and stereo imaging.
the plus to headphones is that theyre cheap and you can get an OK mix on them. especially if you mix, then listen to the mix all a bunch of different systems, take notes, and tweak, repeat. i know this because i used to mix on headphones (AKG 240s) and i could never get the mix to sound right on other systems w/o way more effort than it should. i finally got some half decent monitors (Event TR6s) and within 10min a song, i had the old mix worked out to where it sounded nice on most systems. monitors help take more of the guess work out and make the overall mixing process easier to get decent results

Perhaps I don't have the room acoutsics right, but I have a very difficult time hearing panning, reverb and phasing on my monitors. I can hear it, but I can hear it much better on my cans. Granted my area of production probably involves a great deal more sounds and effects going on at once than most. 3/13/2005 12:35:45 PM |
dannydigtl All American 18302 Posts user info edit post |
^well you're right, you will hear panning and those effects better on headphones since each ear is getting 100% of each channel. ie, there's no channel mixing in the air as w/ speakers/monitors. your job in mixing is getting your intended mix out to everyone accurately so they hear it as you want them to. if you think most ppl will be listening on headphones then mix it for headphones, etc. but just realize that if they listen on any sort of open air speakers (car, home stereo, club, etc) itll sound different and the stereo effect will be diluted. if you listen on your monitors and the effect is weak, then pan harder, add more verb, etc. it will definately take more to produce the same effect w/ open air speaks than headphones. so my point is that this is subjective and a bit of an art and there is of course no right or wrong, but you should try to mix under conditions that will best translate to majority of yoru listeners if you want them to hear it liek you do 3/13/2005 12:43:12 PM |
Kris All American 36908 Posts user info edit post |
well I mentioned that in my first post, I know most people will be listening on speakers, but its easier sometimes to get certain effects just right on headphones, monitors are just a little to forgiving on certian things. 3/13/2005 12:51:22 PM |

speaking of gear, my gf recently bought me a little Digitech RPx400. its a modeling/processor gizmo thats also a 4x USB recording interface. the best part is that you can use the pedals to control recording software so you can record, track, etc all hands free. It comes w/ Pro Tracks which is decent software, but it can also be configured as a midi control surface (has 5 knobs, 4 buttons, 3 foot pedal switches, and a rocker wahwah style pedal) in Cubase, Sonar, etc.
I wanted something that could easily and simply record rhythm tracks and then practice lead stuff hands free and it does that well. when my gf got me this i was kinda whoa DigiTech. i dunno..but i must admit (as a tube amp guru/purist) a lot of the amp models dont sound half bad. you can play w/ crap like amps (w/ all the controls on the real amp), the cab size and type, and mic placement. it also has a ton of effects w/ a million adjustable parameters each to mess with. you can edit, save, etc all the patches. it also has a basic drum machine and a mic pre.
i'm finding it too be quite handy for writing songs, practicing, and even jamming w/ all the different amp sounds. and theres a lot of options for signal routing w/ all the inputs and outputs in this thing for recording, etc. i think its a pretty good deal at $250ish and woudl recommend it 3/13/2005 7:08:55 PM |

yea thats the only way ive ever played my guitar from the time i started out. when i started out you know i always sat down when i played guitar so when i stood i adjusted the guitar so it was at the same height for my hands as if it was on my knees. which is pretty high when you slump over and play it on your knees. so yea thats how it started for me 3/15/2005 12:47:56 PM |

^^youre right. most hardcore sucks...thats why youre band plays hardcore according to purevolume. if you guys were as skilled as btbam then itd be cool but theres really nothing there. 3/15/2005 10:10:58 PM |
CalledToArms All American 22025 Posts user info edit post |
first of all btbam is not hardcore. and i dont really consider my band hardcore at all. the only reason i describe us as "hardcore" on purevolume is to come up in searches and for a similar reason to the search thing because of the general name for the "scene". our style is deifnitely metal/southern rock based. hardcore is more like comeback kid, throwdown, terror etc etc stuff i dont like really. and yes most hardcore especially these days sucks.
what i listen to and what i love to play happen to be slightly different. yes. and hey of course we arent as talented as btbam but theyve got several years and several bands on us man. im pretty sure tommy and paul werent as good as they are now a year into their first band ever...in fact i know they werent. some of the stuff paul and tommy did individually before prayer for cleansing, undying, and btbam sucked bad. so yea. besides the fact that paul has like several years of guitar playing on me and that playing guitar is his job. give it a few years if we stick around that long and we'll see where we are at.
heck the new stuff we are writing is 10x guitar ability our old stuff was so maybe when thats recorded youll give it a chance 3/15/2005 11:37:50 PM |
