One of the power lines is a grounded line. So you'd have to touch that one and another one to get shocked. Regardless, the story is stupid.2/19/2007 12:28:14 PM |

A student rapelled down the side of Sullivan several years ago. Campus Po's were waiting when he made it to the ground. It was actually the son of one of the forestry/ natural resource professors. 2/19/2007 12:39:55 PM |

If you are gonna commit suicide, why the fuck are you gonna jump off of a 4 story building and take a chance at only paralyzing yourself? (which would suck alone, but still being alive when you want to be dead would be another thing)...
especially when there is a huge building right next to you 2/19/2007 12:49:48 PM |

Yeah I know of the Cox suicide in 04, the Sullivan guy in 98 and at least one more off of Lee in the 70's. Chances are good that most dorms have had a suicide or two over the years. They repoured the dumpster area in sullivan but before that there was a nasty blood stain. 2/19/2007 10:40:14 PM |

the guy fell past her window.
i'm not gonna say campus is haunted, but there are some places that very strange occurances take place in - specifically, 1911 building, Winston hall, Leazar, and the woods behind the track. also, dorothea dix was creepy as fuck, and a ton of weird shit would happen out there.
as far as bragaw, i lived there for 3 years, and most of it was spent outside at 4am smoking cigarettes one the southside (suite 121 is where i called home). if it was haunted, i figure i'd have seen something... never did except for a crow that once tried to attack me and ironmike. 2/19/2007 11:56:21 PM |

The only "credible" ghost stories involve Clark and the Alumni Memorial building since they were at one time the infirmaries on campus. If you go into Special Collections you can find information about what buildings are allegedly haunted.
^^Wasn't a horrible fire. the Tower on Tompkins was struck by lightning and caught fire.

I know everyone is saying the beer tab thing is stupid. But I've heard of something similar happening.
It was back in the no-girls time. A bunch of bored guys had been making this ridiculously long chain for like the whole semester. (I think it was tabs, but I can't remember.) And they wanted to know how long the chain was. So, being the total nerds that they were, they decided to use the Pythagorean Theorem. They dropped the chain out the window (they were really high up), and one kid went down to pull it tight away from the building to create a triangle with ground and the building. He kept backing up and backing up until the chain hit a power line. He was electrocuted and died.
(I'll try to verify this somehow.)

Here's the infirmary around 1910:
Here's the same building today (after a "slight" renovation. From the rear you can still see the old house structure.):
I've been meaning to take a look around inside. If you're looking for some sort of creepiness, that's probably your place. Well, that or the orphanage ruins.
Of course I think what scares people at "haunted" places isn't the death, it's the uncommon awareness that people lived, played, laughed, died in the exact place you're now standing. It's like having glimpses of a vaguely familiar parallel universe where things happened that you'll never fully understand, and the unknown is scary. 2/20/2007 1:26:06 AM |

from what I hear there has been a lot of hangings over the years. With regards to the recent deaths from a fire it wasn't a frat house but several frat brothers lived at the location that caught on fire. 2/20/2007 2:24:25 AM |

I heard a story from a campus cop about the time of the shootings on the tennis court that a grad student disappeared they went to her boyfriends place at watagua and noticed all the carpeting and everything had been removed. They suspect the boyfriend killed her, but they could never find any evidence on him.
also, prior to the last head of special collections leaving for another job the two prior ones died. One died on the brick yard and the other died in his office (I witnessed that one at work. 2nd fucking day on the job and my boss died) 2/20/2007 3:31:08 AM |

I call BS because pizza boxes would sometime get stuck in Bowen's trash chute because of the Sprinkler system in that biatch. It would either break off or have a body stuck in the chute2/20/2007 7:50:29 AM |

I used to work for the alumni association filing records in the basement of the alumni memorial building. That was probably the creepiest place I've ever been. I constantly felt like I was never alone, someone was watching me, etc. It wasn't really unpleasant, I just really really felt a presence. I've never finished work that fast before. 2/20/2007 9:09:20 AM |

The University Police Department used to be housed in the building, but recently vacated for a new building. Officers and other workers in the building used to hear and see things. Footsteps are often heard upstairs and shadowy figures have been seen. Unexplained noises have also been heard. One officer saw a shadowy figure walk from one room to another. When she checked the room, she found no one. There was no way for anyone to get in or out of the area without passing her. She also heard a static noise coming from an intercom one night at 4am. No one else was in the building and the intercom system was no longer in use. The building currently houses offices for another one of the University's departments and is locked after 5pm.
Raleigh - North Carolina State University - Spring Hill House - This house was originally privately owned. It was also once part of the Dorothea Dix Hospital complex, but is now owned by NC State University. At night, people inside the empty house have heard a baby crying. The University Police have received activations on the motion detectors inside the house in the pattern of someone walking around the house and out the back door. The original owner is buried in the backyard. " |
