based on your worldview, as presented in this thread, yes. i shudder to think i live in a world where some idiot thinks firefighters deserve less respect for what they do.

^^, ^ and i know several that are underpaid. my mother is one of them. i've never seen one person bring home so much evening and weekend work in my life. i've also never met a person more dedicated to helping others. why don't we ease off on the generalities.

I think everyone knows hard working and under-paid teachers. However, the unions insist on denying merit based compensation. Accepting then that teachers should be treated as an economic commodity and given our poor performance amongst first world nations, a very good argument could be made that "teachers" are overpaid.


I follow what you're saying though. No offense to your mother, or anyone else's mother, is intended.

If you want to pull a high salary at a public school the last thing you should do is to teach conventional class.

You can get a lot more if your title starts with "media" something

no study has ever shown that underpaid people perform better to earn pay raises. However, people who aren't underpaid are much more productive.

Many teachers work second jobs to support their family. Do you think that helps their classroom peformance or hurts it? I'm glad I don't have kids so my small sallary is a plenty. We're not in it for the money, but financial issues can certainly lower moral and make everything harder.

No one made you enter the education field. If earning $top dollar$ is your goal then you should give up your 2 months summer vacation per year and get a normal 8-5 job. My mom's a teacher and i got friends that are newbie teachers. After 30 years and a masters degree my mom makes quite a big chunk of change and can now retire with a substantial severance. Even starting out though it is not like you live in dispair. $32,000 / yr is not exactly living in the gutter like a janitor or McD's hamburger flipper. Fill in your summer vacation with 2 months work and you are approaching $40,000
