Their "trying" was part of the problem. If they'd left him at the bottom of the stairs at 11:22 PM, he might have made it.

But, instead, they carried him back upstairs and kept him just conscious enough to continue hours of injuring himself in various catastrophes, including more falls down the same stairs.
