Quote : | "Okay, what the fuck is that? I have never heard of that. Who could possibly give a shit about the infinitesimal difference?
What are you spending when you have a normal meal out with four people, maybe $200.00 at the edge? I have no idea what the stupid fucking sales tax even is on food. Let's call it 8%, which it probably is not. That'd be $16.00 tax. Let's assume you're tipping 20%. Tipping on the subtotal, that's a $40.00 tip. Tipping with the tax included, that's $43.20. It's not even another five bucks. Or to put that another way, you're talking about tipping an additional 1.6%.
That is so far beyond even mattering. Who could care? What kind of moron teaches people to make this distinction and argues in its favor?
Like let's say you have lunch by yourself. You get, like, a $15.00 meal at a hibachi place or something. Your total is like $16.20 with tax, who could possibly give a shit? You feel generous and decide to tip 25%. That's $3.75 on the subtotal, $4.05 on the total. It's fucking 30 cents. What the hell is wrong with you?" |
its not like using the subtotal takes any extra effort
if you want to tip 25%, why not just tip 25% on the subtotal instead of guessing and wondering what your tip comes to because you don't know what the tax rate is? Its especially relevant if you travel a lot and don't know what the local tax rate, or if there is extra tax on alcohol, etc... for each city you are in.
maybe it would be silly or pointless to do if this required any extra steps, but your subtotal is shown on your receipt so why the hell would you not just tip on the actual cost of your meal?
instead of wondering if you tipped them an extra dollar, you could know that you tipped them an extra dollar

It is extra effort to look two lines up to the subtotal compared to just looking at the total. And for what? It sounds like just an excuse to leave a marginally smaller tip. Why even bother making the distinction? It doesn't make any sense to me.
Like, how far are you gonna parse this shit out? Oh, let's not tip on the cost of goods sold, let's just tip on the labor cost at a higher rate. It's stupid. Here's what you owe, and calculate your percentage on top of that.
Now I'm paranoid about this. When a food truck with a Square reader is prompting me to tip, is it going off the pre-tax amount or the subtotal? Christ Almighty. 6/5/2017 1:10:21 PM |

Why do you think that a server somewhere with no or low taxes deserves a smaller tip than a server somewhere with a 10%+ tax?
tip the amount you want, why guess?

no, that's absurd, tipping is about service

The server's income tax bracket doesn't matter in the slightest, really. How would I even know? But sales & food taxes place an undue burden on the poor. 6/5/2017 1:18:30 PM |
dtownral Suspended 26632 Posts user info edit post |
why only sales tax, shouldn't you then be basing it on cost of living? Should I tip like 50% in manhattan and 10% in raleigh? 6/5/2017 1:23:49 PM |
FroshKiller All American 51922 Posts user info edit post |
If you're going to be absurd, we shouldn't be tipping at all, because everyone should have a guaranteed income that covers living expenses. There shouldn't be any need for complex behavior that provides an unreliable, unenforceable social safety net. 6/5/2017 1:25:50 PM |
dtownral Suspended 26632 Posts user info edit post |
you tip for good service, servers are protected by minimum wage laws. wages being insufficient is another issue.
your silly argument has no basis other than that's the way you were doing it and you didn't realize other people don't tip on tax. there is no reason that makes any sense to pay a tip on tax.
if you want to tip 25% you can easily do that on the subtotal, you don't need to tip 20% on the total and then just wonder what your actual tip was because you don't know.

And if you're spending 200 on a one-time ingestion of food, who cars if you're having to tip 4 more dollars. You've just spend 200 on food!
However if you're splitting it up 4 ways, then it isn't so bad, and the tax isn't so bad, so the tip won't be so bad.

Food trucks i tend to tip 10% - 15% but i cap it out at $5 to $6. Bought $40 of food from a food truck before and didn't feel that was worth $8 for some finger food and pizza that was ready pretty quickly, especially given that they own the food truck so they're getting paid unlike a server at a restaurant. 6/5/2017 2:53:43 PM |
