Still, September is for pretenders. Concerned but not worried.

You should be very worried. I love Cam, I want him to succeed and be our QB for the next 3-5 years and chase another MVP season to prove critics wrong...but he looked awful tonight. So many third down throws that should have been completed that he either lead too far or simply just overthrew. ...or, in the case of Curtis’s last few targets, threw late and behind.
When we had trouble running the ball, we could have tried some ways to get CMC or Curtis in space with pitches, short passes, sweeps or a reverse — we were not obligated to throw the ball over 40 times in a one score game.
This team needs to get its shit together and win 3 of the next 4 if we even want to be relevant this seaosn. I’ll spare us all the rest of my bullshit I want to say, god that game sucked. If they fired the offensive staff tonight I would smile.

Cam's reluctance to run really limits his game and effectiveness.
3-4 years ago we don't run a wildcat on 4th and < 1, ever, Cam would have just ran that right over the middle and it would have been an automatic 1st or TD.
Not sure if he's scared of hurting the shoulder or if he's lost some explosiveness in his running ability but he just doesn't look the same anymore. The overthrows have always been there, but if you take away his ability to run he's basically an average to below-average QB.
Unless he improves as the season progresses, then I'm all for drafting a QB in the 1st round this year and letting them sit behind Cam on the final year of his contract next year. 9/13/2019 7:09:53 AM |

Idk...Cam already looked way less than 100% in weeks 1 and 2. Now he’s injured enough to actually miss time. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was out a significant amount of time...we need him to get as healthy as possible.
I’d be totally cool with brining in Kaep for a workout. It’s not like Allen or Grier have looked good in preseason or anything. We saw how shitty the Jets looked last night with back up QBs. I’m all for trying to get somebody that actually move the ball. 9/17/2019 2:02:57 PM |

I just don't see any team signing Kaep ever. According to his agent they reached out to 3 teams this week. The Steelers told him to pound sand. The Saints didn't return the call, and the Jets didn't say yes or no. If Tepper didn't sign him after Cam underwent a 2nd surgery this past offseason I just don't see him being willing to sign him during season. 9/18/2019 12:58:41 PM |
dmspack oh we back 25500 Posts user info edit post |
yeah at this point, Kaep won't ever get signed imo. he's only getting older - and while i'm confident he's better than some scrubs still in the league - the excuses to not sign him are getting even easier and more convenient than they were before.
the "but he hasn't played in X years" is still somewhat bullshit when you remember that fucking josh johnson started 3 games for Washington last year after he hadn't thrown an NFL pass since 2011. 9/18/2019 1:06:17 PM |
LudaChris All American 7946 Posts user info edit post |
Kaep had 1 solid season but was a fringe starter after that. He's now years removed from the league, why would anyone think he got better by not playing football?
Kaep is a known commodity that is rusty. It's much smarter to take a chance on the younger guys that you don't know their upside. Steelers have a 3rd round pick they want to see if he can be the guy, Panthers have Allen and Grier that still are a bit of unknowns, Jets will get Darnold back soon enough, Saints have the highest paid back-up in the league in Bridgewater and the Hill who is a bit of a mystery.
It's a really hard sell for a guy like Kaep, he wasn't an elite QB in his prime, why anyone would think he would even be above-average after 3 years removed is funny. If Kaep REALLY wanted to be in the NFL, he would have gone and played in one of the other leagues and showed he still has "it" and/or has improved, but he doesn't want to play football, he just wants to be able to spin that he's been black-balled and keep his name out there.

That's not really the same. There is a difference in, "he hasn't played in a game in X years" vs "he hasn't been on a team in X years". Josh Johnson was practicing and playing in the preseason and such, so you'd imagine he's at LEAST in football shape and has had his head in a playbook each year. When is the last time Kaep cracked open a playbook? Broke down a defense? I'm sure Kaep is in great shape, but I think there is a difference in being fast/agile/strong vs being in football shape(physically, mentally, etc)9/19/2019 10:08:38 AM |

or he REALLY didn’t want to risk a severe injury playing against inferior competition after proving himself for years as a high-level starting quarterback in the NFL

^true, and his numbers were almost always he was always the Bronze medalist in the similar QB Comparison based on numbers (Cam, Kaep, RW).
I don't know how effective or ineffective he would be but I do believe given time to familiarize himself with the Seahawks, Panthers, Ravens offense he could be a capable backup. I just wonder if he was serious if he would come in on a prorated 1 year deal for $2-3 Million (Which is generous for a QB out of league). Eric Reid only got a $1 million base last season. 9/19/2019 1:57:56 PM |

If you truly love football and want to play, like he claims he does, this just doesn't make any sense. Teams don't think you can still play, why not go tear it up against inferior talent and look like a star? Sure you could get hurt being paid less than what you think you're worth, but you could get hurt working out getting paid nothing. Kaep wants starter money or it's not worth it to him to play football, so that tells me he's not dying to play football.
His persona actually benefits from not being picked up by a team. If he gets picked up by a team this year and he goes out there and he is AWFUL, it completely invalidates his entire argument about being black-balled and it just makes him look like a washed up athlete. Playing football is a great risk for him and there is a reason his agent points out that he reaches out to these teams(esp the ones like the Saints that SHOULD have no reason to call him back) because they're just trying to push their angle.
He is a career <60% passer with a good TD:INT ratio but averages ~210 total yards/game. His best season was 2014 when he passes for 3,369 yards(60.5%), 19 TDs, 10 INTs, 639 yards rushing with 1 TD and 5 fumbles. That is 4,008 total yards, 20 TDs, 15 turnovers.
In 2018, those stats would have him 20th in the NFL in passing yards, 3rd in rushing yards, 21st in passing TDs, and tied for 18th in rushing TDs. Like I said, dude was a below average starter in his prime and now we're talking about 3 years removed from taking a snap in a preseason or regular season game. Dude might have been blackballed his first year out of the league, but now no one takes him serious as a football player.9/19/2019 2:16:05 PM |

Nobody says he’s better than he used to be. But he’s definitely better than, say, Nathan Peterman who has been given multiple chances.
Quote : | "It's much smarter to take a chance on the younger guys that you don't know their upside. " |
Sure, nobody’s saying to bench your promising rookie or 2nd year QB for Kaep. But I am saying Kaep is just as deserving, if not more, than trotting out has-been veterans that suck.
Quote : | "Saints have the highest paid back-up in the league in Bridgewater and the Hill who is a bit of a mystery" |
I don’t think they should bench Bridgewater. I’m not sure anybody has seriously argued that. Bridgewater showed plenty of promise earlier in his career before injuries. But...Taysom Hill? Dude has more receptions than career completions. He’s not a viable QB option. That’s why the Saints got Bridgewater. Hill is a QB in name only at this point. He’s a utility man, imo.
Quote : | "but he doesn't want to play football, he just wants to be able to spin that he's been black-balled and keep his name out there" |
I mean, he was blackballed.

I’ll grant you there’s a difference, sure. But Johnson had been signed to the AAF and wasn’t on a NFL roster when he was signed in December last year.
Quote : | "When is the last time Kaep cracked open a playbook? " |
Hard to learn an NFL playbook when you get blackballed from playing in the league.
At this point, it’s been long enough that it doesn’t matter. Kaep, 4+ years removed from playing in the NFL will not get another shot. He doesn’t even have to be black balled anymore because it’s been so long that teams can rightfully claim that he’s not in playing shape and that there are younger, higher ceiling guys available.9/19/2019 3:21:34 PM |

I don’t think anybody has seriously ever claimed that he’s a top 10 QB. The claim is simply that he’s better than some of the awful players that have been given multiple chances in the time he hasn’t been given those chances.9/19/2019 3:25:53 PM |
