Quote : | " President Donald Trump finally offered some attempt at fiscal stimulus, but the measures fell flat. The European Central Bank took a stab by easing capital constraints and boosting liquidity, and losses only deepened. Not even an unprecedented plan for $5 trillion in bond-buying from the Federal Reserve could mollify investors rattled by the growing likelihood that the coronavirus will plunge the global economy into recession." |
I’m not an economist but I don’t see the thinking behind this kind of stimulus. If the problem was fear or investing or not enough money to invest, as in 2008, this might make sense. But investors are expecting real loss on worker productivity because of quarantine, isolation, and lockdown. You can’t invest in opportunity that doesn’t exist, but maybe I’m missing something here.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-11/asia-stocks-set-for-losses-dow-enters-bear-market-markets-wrap
Trump continues to try and minimize the potential for impact too which will make the impact worse. CDC supposedly only tested 77 people today.
Hard to predict how this is going to end up. States are doing the right thing but policies are disjoint between states. I haven’t heard anything from my insurance on what I’m supposed to do if I think I’m sick. Do I just traipse into an urgent care waiting room risking infecting other people or getting infected? 3/12/2020 6:22:25 PM

UNC is going full remote for students, but my school is going to have Faculty teach from our empty classrooms and have most of us still come in. Hoping that gets changed once folks realize that this can be taught totally from home. We have a meeting to inform the Faculty about this tomorrow, but they've already been saying they are not going to come in because of Coronavirus. Telling them what to do is way the fuck above my paygrade.
And kids K-12 school is cancelled until at least April. I'm going to talk to my boss about working from home every other day or half days or something. We shall see how this plays out. Crazy times. 3/12/2020 10:38:53 PM

Interesting info from an expert panel at UCSF
They’re basically resigned to a bunch of deaths particularly of old people. The main goals now are to keep the system from buckling under capacity which means spreading out the infections over longer time period.
Hard to say what a million plus old and sick people dying across the country will cause
If you can keep your old people isolated that’s how they are safest— pull them out of nursing homes. It smart would be better for young people to go ahead and get sick, quarantine, then become immune to create a herd immunity.

It's a logistical nightmare for me, personally. If you ever want to know how much your employer truly values you when you work in education/academia, or if they'll try to set you up for success when shit hits the fan, you'll probably be sorely disappointed. Especially if you work at a public institution. One of my Deans is a total coward and turned on his auto-reply today because he's "taking time for his mental health" about an hour after another cowardly college president decided to close the school, TOMORROW instead of immediately.
Glad I can figure my shit out on my own, while admins who make bank can bounce and take time for themselves, all knowing that teachers will press on and take care of themselves, their students, and each other. Feels good man.

The Federal Reserve can create money out of thin air and buy bank securities with it. They did this for a long time after 2008.

For a long time, I've been irritated at the amount of work travel I have relative to my coworkers. I got a lot less. Finally, though, the stars aligned and I had no fewer than six trips scheduled for the first five months of the year. That adds up to a lot of extra vacation time and extra money, both of which I could use, since I just bought a house and need to fix a bunch of shit.
I got to go on one of those trips before everything went tits up.
This is definitely some white privilege first world problems shit, I know. We can telework (to the enormous frustration of our bosses, who have been trying to scale it back for years and who are now forced to encourage it). I don't have kids to be kept out of school. I got a pile of sick leave if I need it, and although my retirement accounts are taking a beating, I'm still decades away from needing them.
But damn, man. That per diem money was gonna buy me a grill. 3/15/2020 12:25:13 PM

^^^ Yep--it's the absolute most first-world of first-world problems, as I will bet that the impact now will be that I end up not going to work for weeks, but getting paid just the same. Oh, and it's spring in FL and I'm getting a boat next weekend and will have both of my motorcycles fixed here in a few days. Other than having a nurse wife who I figure will surely bring the virus home and infect us all, I suppose I have just about the fewest imaginable woes that one could have from this. Trust me, I'm keeping it in perspective.
...but I was supposed to go to Vegas with my wife this week--which was a 1st anniversary make-up of our honeymoon-to-be that got screwed up last year--then I was going to Germany and then on to Morocco a day or two after that with the USMC Reserves for a 2-2.5 week multinational military exercise. All of that got cancelled.
I'm supposed to do a 10-day trip to Nepal in June for an off-road motorcycle tour of the country, starting in Kathmandu and up into lower Mustang province. Hopefully that trip doesn't get screwed up.
I've been really looking forward to all this travel and adventure for 6 months, as I had been feeling like a little too much grass had been growing under my feet for a while. 3/15/2020 1:21:25 PM

We get compensatory time off for travel outside of normal work hours, so if I'm in transit for 8 hours on a Sunday, that works out to 8 hours comp time that works functionally the same as vacation.
There's some nuance to it, limits on how much can be taken for layovers and whatnot, but that's the basic concept. And given that my work involves tropical regions of the world that I enjoy visiting, yes, work trips are like a vacation from the office (even if the entire day is spent in the same type of dull conference room I would be in back home). ![](images/smoke.gif) 3/15/2020 1:36:48 PM

My mother-in-law is in early 60s and transferred all her 401k money to very safe investments...in early January. Her and my father-in-law who is on permanent disability are not well-off by a longshot, so happy for her she lucked out and did this when she did.
A CNBC anchor or two throwing out 2 week closure of markets. I doubt that would go well.

The risk to the latter in economic turmoil is far greater. As restaurants close and the big suppliers become in jeopardy it's going to have more effects. Not to mention large plants with people working in close quarters more susceptible and the immigrants who work there high tailing it home.
If the system were more decentralized effects would be more local and Phil the farmer wouldn't have to worry about Buddy. 3/16/2020 9:18:54 AM
