Lauren Boebert and some of these other QAnon gun-freaks (Marjorie Taylor Greene, Madison Crawford) need to be frog marched out congress if these allegations are true (so far only Boebert is being implicated). If they are as dumb as they appear, I'm sure they didn't cover their tracks well enough and these allegations should be easy enough to prove. Same goes for Cruz and Hawley, but I'm sure they were not dumb enough to directly implicate themselves like the Q squad. 1/18/2021 6:30:24 PM |

I'm not quite so pessimistic. The mob effort was repudiated by everyone, even, in the eyes of participants, by the president himself. The echo chamber they need to maintain and build momentum has been dismantled, at least for the time being. No, right now they - referring to the mass of people who participated in or supported the insurrection - are beaten back rather than emboldened. Their anger and supposed grievances are still there to be harnessed, and I don't trust the media and elected officials to keep up the pressure necessary to crush it, but the most radical faction of the populist right is weaker today than it was at the start of the month.
Now, the masses aside, I think it's plausible that this event will have generated some McVeigh types, as you said.
Quote : | "Nahh. They all want pardons." |
Maybe? I think it's more likely that they actually thought this was going to work or that they were at least gonna walk away scot free because, hey, white privilege, and when that didn't work out they folded like the simpering cowards they really are. These aren't people who are scheming for a pardon - if that were the plan, I'd expect less "I'm sorry" and more "Trump was robbed! Stop the steal!" These are people (rightfully) afraid now that they don't have a huge crowd to prop them up.
Overall point being, there's a lot to be concerned about regarding 1/6, but it was a sound defeat for the radical Trumpists. Yeah, they got to be dickheads in the capitol building, but they didn't achieve any of their goals, their communication network has been dealt a massive blow, and a small but important number of them are going to jail. No matter what happens tomorrow, it's bad for the Trumpists. If, God forbid, they try something serious, the crackdown will be overwhelming and it will be years before anyone is willing to give a platform to any of their nuttier ideas. If they don't do anything, it reinforces the image of a pathetic uprising that accomplished nothing and then got crushed.
But all of that just applies to this particular manifestation of the simmering resentment in certain segments of society, particularly the whiter, dumber ones. They're still pissed off and, to almost quote JesusHChrist, "Someone far more ideologically driven and competent than Trump will could try to harness that energy for their gain." Now the seal is broken; incidents like this will take place again on various scales, and each iteration will normalize political mob violence further. Historically it's a process that leads, within a generation or two, to a dictator taking power to restore order. I'm not so pessimistic as to think that the trend is invariable but it is alarming.1/19/2021 2:59:15 PM |

I don't really agree with this. Do you facebook and look at Vice, or NPR, local new channels, etc. comment sections? Read comments on Fox New articles? See polls? These terrorists seem to have quite a bit of support among "average" Americans.

I don't think history agrees with this assessment at all. These events typically encourage more attempts, not less. Do not confuse the sentiments of the moderate center with the sentiments of the extreme right. You and I may be appalled, but those who were predisposed to be sympathetic to their causes are emboldened, not weakened.
Andrew McCabe explains how these events usually indicate an uptick in violence, not a retreat:

Yes, this is our concern. Dozens of McVeigh's and Dylan Roof's just got inspired to carry out their power-fantasies over the government and minority groups. Whether or not they can continue to assemble openly remains to be seen and will be dependent on the severity of the response during these upcoming months/years. But "isolated" acts should probably be expected at the least. And should another figure come out and see this movement as a vehicle for attaining political power, then, well....1/19/2021 4:37:42 PM |

There's speculation on the right that the January 6 insurrection was an inside job, orchestrated by Nancy Pelosi.

Yes, I've had "friends" on social media saying that for a couple weeks now. The FBI knew about it weeks ahead of time, Nancy knew and allowed it (or even helped plan it), and she left 20 minutes before they stormed it. 2/16/2021 10:51:02 AM |

Quote : | "A heavy metal musician and founding member of the Oath Keepers extremist group pleaded guilty Friday to charges connected to the storming of the U.S. Capitol and agreed to cooperate with investigators — a first in the massive probe into the deadly Jan. 6 assault.
Jon Schaffer, a guitarist and songwriter for the heavy metal band Iced Earth, entered his plea during a hearing in federal court in Washington, D.C. The plea deal, which comes 100 days after a mob of Trump supporters violently overran the Capitol, marks a significant step for prosecutors in the case.
Schaffer, who originally faced six counts, pleaded guilty to two charges — obstructing an official proceeding and entering restricted grounds with a dangerous weapon.
In his plea agreement, Schaffer acknowledged that on Jan. 6 he was among the first people to force their way through police lines and into the Capitol. He also acknowledged wearing a tactical vest and carrying bear spray as he did so.
During Friday's hearing, Judge Amit Mehta talked through the plea agreement with Schaffer. Mehta said the agreement stipulates that Schaffer fully cooperate with investigators, including providing testimony and witness interviews.
It is unclear what Schaffer may be able to tell investigators, but a dozen members or associates of the Oath Keepers are charged with conspiracy in connection with the Capitol attack. " |

History
The Epoch Times is an international, multi-language news media company in print and online. The Epoch Times first published in New York in April 2000 (in Chinese only) and the online edition in August 2000. In 2003, The Epoch Times launched an online edition in English, which began printing as a newspaper in New York in 2004. The Epoch Times is founded by John Tang and a group of Chinese-American Falun Gong practitioners. The Epoch Times publishes in 21 languages in 35 countries across five continents. Their focus topics include sections for world and national news, op-eds, sports, entertainment, business, arts and culture, travel, and health.
On December 20, 2019, Facebook took down more than 600 accounts connected to The Epoch Times. According to an NBC News report, “The network was called ‘The BL’ and was run by Vietnamese users posing as Americans, using fake photos generated by algorithms to simulate real identities. The Epoch Media group, which pushes a variety of pro-Trump conspiracy theories, spent $9.5 million on ads to spread content through the now-suspended pages and groups.”
Read our profile on the USA government’s influence on media.
Funded by / Ownership
The Epoch Times is owned by the Epoch Media Group, which also owns NTD. The Epoch Times receives funding through a subscription, advertising, and donation model. According to their about page, they are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Analysis / Bias
In review, The Epoch Times covers straight news reporting through journalists and low-biased syndication through the Associated Press and Reuters. However, when reporting on China, they do reflect a strong anti-communism bias. The Epoch Times also uses loaded language that usually favors the right, such as Why Media Organizations Can’t Let Go of the Fake Russia-Collusion Narrative.
Editorially, there is an extreme Pro-Trump bias. Almost all articles praising Trump and denigrating the left, such as these Democratic Party: A Broken Kaleidoscope? and Five Reasons Trump’s Celebration of America Was Epic Display of Patriotism. According to an NBC News report, the “outlet has spent more than $1.5 million on about 11,000 pro-Trump advertisements in the last six months, according to data from Facebook’s advertising archive — more than any organization outside of the Trump campaign itself, and more than most Democratic presidential candidates have spent on their own campaigns.” In general, straight news reporting is sourced and mostly low biased; however, op-eds 100% favor the right with some promoting conspiracy theories. During the 2020 Coronavirus outbreak and the 2020 Presidential election, they have promoted misinformation. See failed fact checks below.
Failed Fact Checks

Finally, the above referenced NBC News report states, “In addition to claims that alien abductions are real and the “deep state engineered the drug epidemic,” the channel pushes the QAnon conspiracy theory, which falsely posits that the same “Spygate” cabal is a front for a global pedophile ring being taken down by Trump.”
Overall, we rate The Epoch Times Right Biased and Questionable based on the publication of pseudoscience and the promotion of propaganda and conspiracy theories, as well as numerous failed fact checks. (M. Huitsing 8/21/2017) (Updated 03/10/2021)" |
