Quote :
"The leaders of the House Jan. 6 committee say they plan to invite Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, to speak to the committee in the wake of reporting by the Washington Post that the committee has evidence of Thomas communicating with lawyer John Eastman.

Eastman was central to a pressure campaign against then-Vice President Pence to reject the election results when Congress convened on Jan. 6 to count the Electoral College vote, committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., and vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., say. Thompson told this to reporters on Capitol Hill and Cheney's view was confirmed to NPR's Deirdre Walsh by an aide.

It's unclear if they will first ask for voluntary appearance or a closed door deposition, or send a subpoena.

Ginni Thomas was previously revealed to have been in touch with Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows via text message between the election and Jan. 6. At the time of those revelations, Thompson had said he would recommend the committee ask Thomas to appear before them, but didn't make a request. Some members of the committee have said that Thomas didn't play a significant role ahead of Jan. 6 before the latest reports emerged Wednesday night.

The Supreme Court rejected an 11th-hour effort by Trump allies to have it step in during the legal fight over the election results, during which dozens of lower court cases were almost all decided against Trump. However, Justice Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito disagreed with that decision. Thomas was also the lone dissenter when the Supreme Court ruled against Trump as he sought to have his White House records shielded from the Jan. 6 committee investigation."

They trotted this guy out to speak directly to all of the sniveling Conservative lawyers that seem to occupy every corner of the federal bureaucracy. You know, all the OTHER Jeffrey Clarks and John Eastmans spawning out of the federalist society’s Ivy League programs every year. This guy is a conservative lawyer rock star, a federal court judge long enough that his office became a conduit for Supreme Court clerks, himself a clerk for Scalia, legal counsel for several Republican presidents, even helped Boeing navigate corporate liability. But give the guy credit, he called a coup a coup and I hope some of these other dbags heard that loud and clear.

Mike Pence has zero chance for a political future in today's Republican Party. He's deluding himself. He stood firm on January 6th and did the right thing, and for that I'm appreciative. Why can't he just give up on his impossible political aspirations and fully cooperate with the committee to bring out the whole ugly truth? The guy almost got lynched. If he wants to do what is best for the country, the path forward seems clear. He would have greater historical significance in doing this than being a one-term VP yes-man associated with a disgraced regime. I guess I don't get political logic. It's obvious he's toast to the Trump base.

My guess was somewhere in the middle with a healthy lean towards things getting out of hand. It's starting to look a lot like a planned coup from the top.

I'm sorry but anyone with a half of a functioning brain can tell this was 100% pre-planned/orchestrated and that Trump was going to do whatever he could to overturn the election. Not one bit of the testimony is surprising if you've even remotely been paying attention.

I'm legitimately shocked you thought/think the explanation was closer to "things getting out of hand" than it clearly being a planned coup that was weeks (if not months) in the making. Have you just been tuning things out this whole time, or are you waiting for more a "smoking gun"? Not calling you an idiot, just surprised you're thinking Trump deserved even a smidgen of the benefit of doubt. Did you not watch any of New Yorker footage that was readily available to the public shortly after-- footage that clearly depicted people being absolutely violent/out of control and nearly crushing Capitol Police to death, while desecrating the halls of Congress?

pretty surprising to hear that he wanted secret service to remove metal detectors in order to let armed people into a secured area for his speech

also pretty surprising to hear that he assaulted a secret service agent in an attempt to drive to the Capitol

I pay quite a bit of attention to these things and those were both unheard of until today

It's absolutely appalling/disgusting (assuming her account is true), but not shocking (imo) given how he acted after he got COVID and forced SS to drive him around to put on a "show" before being airlifted to Walter Reed. Not only that, he knew he had COVID and showed up to debate Biden hoping to infect him, let alone exposing his wife and son. He's a mob boss cartoon character and the fact that people are suddenly clutching their pearls 1.5 year after the fact is what shocks ME the most...

Distinction without a major difference, but fair enough. Totally surprising that a bankrupt con artist who tried to defund the postal service to prevent vote-in mailing months ahead of the election a would stoop to the level of trying to assault a SS agent and invite people with weapons to mow down Pence, Pelosi, and the entire line of succession, along with dangling pardons. So off brand for him!

point taken. I'll rescind earlier my "half a brain" comment since it was rude/condescending. If this latest testimony is enough to shock more of the public into tapping in to the outrage/frustration I've been feeling since 1/6 AND it helps bring some semblance of justice/reform/accountability, that's better than quibbling about levels of shock/surprise on the internet.

Yesterday's testimony was pretty wild. What's been the explanation of why the surprise hearing? Did they ask Hutchinson to testify live to try to get ahead of something? Something to do with Meadows?

And people that that think all these people are lying..... what do they think they have to gain by lying? It's pretty obvious some of these people are very nervous and scared.

Republicans were dumb trying to get ahead of the story yesterday harping on the fact that it’s all just hearsay (no shit, she was repeating what someone else told her), and they tried to discredit her by saying Trump was in a limo making her story about him trying to grab the steering wheel sound impossible (he was in a Suburban). SS is probably going to try and deflect/minimize and be as vague as possible so as to not look incompetent, but people are getting caught up in the wrong details. Him throwing a plate isn’t a big deal; him lunging at the driver not that big of a deal either; him encouraging armed lunatics to bypass metal detectors and demand to be driven to the Capitol is what’s really the big deal.

Anyone who believes this shit needs to back up off the Cable News and get out more.

Yeah, there was a pretty bad riot on one side of the building. Disavow. Another side (east?) was opened by the cops and people were allowed in. 35 cops are under investigation. We can agree to disagree on whether or not those people were trespassing. I don't think they knew they were, at least not those 10ft+ back in the line. I think believing in QAnon is a bigger crime than their peaceful protest in the capitol (once again, not the violent ones).

I definitely think that everyone who broke in should be charged with trespassing... but I think it's psycho so many people were held in solitary for a year and a half over that charge when Colberts crew had the same charge and was out in a night.

I won't even watch the show trial "bipartisan" committee where the only "republicans" are uniparty reps Kinzinger and Cheney... both of whom are actively fundraising off this from democrats. At least they stopped pretending.

I can't wait for the actual trials to start so people can be cross examined and rebuttal witnesses can be called. I will definitely watch that. Am genuinely curious to see if anyone did plan anything ahead of time.

^Are you not aware of Trump's plan that would have had Pence refuse to certify the electoral vote, sending the vote to the House and likely resulting in overturning the electoral vote?

And the hearings are not a "show trial". They are hearings. They do not pretend to be a trial at all and no convictions could possibly result from these hearings alone.

These are only two of the issues I found with your post; there are others, but I expect there are other posters here better qualified than I to rebut your points. You actually might learn more if you did try watching the hearings. And the reason Kinzinger and Cheney are the only Republicans involved is because Kevin McCarthy submitted specific Republicans under suspicion for the events of January 6 and then refused to participate further when they were rejected. You can't blame Democrats for Republican refusal to engage in good faith. (Well, obviously you can, but you would be placing the blame on the wrong party).

How does that compare with believing the election was fraudulent? How does it compare with using the power of one's office to spread that belief, despite the absence of any supporting evidence?

I'm not sure that anyone who was simply trespassing was held in solitary confinement. I think that solitary confinement was reserved for those who literally broke into the building, attacked Capitol Police officers, and possibly the five Proud Boys and eleven Oath Keepers who have been charged with seditious conspiracy.

Here's a video from the first hearing, in case you missed it:
