I figured an old hag wouldn't get many email, or listen to anything beyond the 30 songs she's been listening to since the 70's But I bought the 4gb to see if I liked it and still haven't filled it up yet.. I've got it mostly filled with pictures tho. If I put a bunch of songs on it I'd def need the 8 10/2/2007 7:31:44 PM |

ok so i finally gave in on this iphone deal after my 8125 started acting funny. turns out the fuckin apple is lightyears ahead of the wm piece in quality, design, and ease of use. by far the best-working piece of electronics i have ever purchased. although i still dont like the fact that steve jobs is trying hard to stick it up mine as far as accessory/upgrade availability

I gotta give this thing some credit. I bought one today after trying to surf wap yesterday for twenty minutes and got nothing accomplished.
I don't even feel much need for a laptop now (90% of my use is net based). I just need to confirm that this thing can only open a PDF file. I heard it could do word and excel. 10/9/2007 12:39:20 AM |

I WANT A FREAKIN ''MARK ALL MAIL READ'' BUTTON.
When I have like 50 emails a day all coming to my phone, half of which are pretty large and no wi-fi available it drives me crazy having to go thru each one of them 10/9/2007 2:55:55 PM |

Nope. Even when you open a message and it hasn't been technically marked as read, the only option is to "mark as unread". Quite annoying. 10/9/2007 3:36:23 PM |

throwing against a wall is a hell of a lot more force than falling off a car. anyways, read some reviews..the small amount i read said some of the cases were wearing off paint and really not doing their jobs. that's about all i can tell you, though. 10/11/2007 10:31:15 AM |

so one of those tattooed nerds at the iStore told me the reason they didn't include 3G in the iPhone is because it would drain the battery and make it thick as hell. i still cynically contend apple wants to suck more $$$ out of me...though the idiots refunded me way too much $ on my original purchase so who knows.

3G might use more power but seems like it'd have to use it a hell of a lot less time..Maybe they should set it up to use edge for small stuff and 3G for web browsing or large emails..something like that. Quote : | "Third Party Applications on the iPhone
Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile platform ever for developers.
It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once—provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task. Some claim that viruses and malware are not a problem on mobile phones—this is simply not true. There have been serious viruses on other mobile phones already, including some that silently spread from phone to phone over the cell network. As our phones become more powerful, these malicious programs will become more dangerous. And since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target.
Some companies are already taking action. Nokia, for example, is not allowing any applications to be loaded onto some of their newest phones unless they have a digital signature that can be traced back to a known developer. While this makes such a phone less than “totally open,” we believe it is a step in the right direction. We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs.
We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones.
Steve
P.S.: The SDK will also allow developers to create applications for iPod touch. [Oct 17, 2007]" |

the auto-brightness feature only samples the brightness once when you bring the phone out of sleep mode, so if you, for example, turn the phone on under a bright light then walk into a dark room the brightness doesn't change unless you lock and unlock the phone again10/17/2007 6:23:30 PM |

It's awesome that Apple is releasing the iPhone/Touch SDK, we'll see some awesome apps for sure. I'm interested to see how Apple breaks jailbroken devices in the next update.
On a side note, I don't know if we will see 3rd party apps from the enthusiast community. I bet Apple will require some sort of digital signature for apps before they will work on a non-modified device. 10/17/2007 6:53:30 PM |

I'm definitely thinking apps will have to go through Apple to gain a digital signature. Apps will probably also be pushed through iTunes to the user, considering that's the only way to sync the device. 10/17/2007 9:13:32 PM |

so hows imap running over the iphone? seems like it would take even longer to open up larger email messages (mostly due to the lack of a way to mark messages as read). 10/24/2007 1:52:36 PM |
Golovko All American 27023 Posts user info edit post |
IMAP is awesome...exactly what gmail needed on the iphone.
^if you 'read' a message through gmails online interface then it marks it as read on your iphone and visversa. Also if you send an email from your iphone you don't get it as an incoming message again in your inbox. It just goes and moves to your sent folder like its supposed to. If you delete a message on the iphone its deleted on gmail. If you mark a message as unread its marked in both places etc....thats how imap works. Not sure what your question is exactly. Large messages open fine read/unread for me especially over weefee

^ the issue (discussed earlier in this thread), is youre trying to open large gmail messages over the cell network (non-wifi) that it can take forever for the message to finally open and remove the unread mark...and theres no "mark as read" functionality. and it sounds like imap is slower than pop, so will it take even longer to open up large messages over imap? bascially how big of a performance hit do you take by switching to imap. 10/24/2007 3:46:06 PM |
agentlion All American 13936 Posts user info edit post |
that sounds like a non-issue, really.
from the Ars article, the IMAP vs. POP performance issue depends on how fast the server is. We can assume that 1) Google has pumped up their Gmail servers to make sure the additional overhead is more than covered, and 2) the performance hit on the server is nothing compared to the download speed, even on a fast network, much less on the EDGE network. i.e. the slow speed on EDGE will greatly override any inherent speed differences in IMAP vs POP 10/24/2007 3:53:26 PM |
