oh man, i love dual sports.

and i wasn't anti-harley until i finally rode one about a month ago. What a suck-ass motorcycle for what they cost.




I ordered some saddlebags to put on my SV650...one of them arrived tonight. Hopefully the other one got lost in the UPS truck and shows up tomorrow.

^^ lol i rocked out one saddlebag for a while after i had a piece of a tire blowout from a truck in front of me take out my oil filter, footpeg, shifter, and hit my foot so hard that my leg swung back and kicked the left saddlebag off the damn bike at 70 mph, fuckin destroyed that thing

it turns out that one bag was shipped inside the other.


Now I just have to figure out how to put them on the bike without them sitting on the exhaust. Also, I think they might be in the way of the passenger pegs.

are they soft bags? if they don't have reinforced sides and bottoms, plastic flourescent light covers, like the 2'x2' ones at lowes work good, you can cut them to fit, it'll help the bag hold its shape and not sag down into the exhaust

I've been looking at custom cr500 motard projects on Youtube and such. Do want! I can't imagine how fun(scary) it would be to ride one of those beasts. It's probably more of a challenge to keep the front end down than it is to keep it up.

I wonder if anyone has ever do some more sportbike-esque conversion by swapping the front end then stiffening and maybe lowering the rear? That would be a badass custom for sure.

what do you guys do as far as securing your bikes? i plan on getting a bike in a couple of months and a buddy of mine store his bike in my garage as well. he wants to lag it to the floor, but i'd rather not drill into the floor. i certainly don't trust him to be careful enough to do it with out ending up with up a half dozen half-busted, half-drilled holes.

I chain mine to a tree usually. Or run a chain through both wheels if there's no tree around. They can still steal it, but they'll have to pick the mofo up and carry it.

Put it indoors. If that's not possible, get one of those big-ass coated security cables or chains and padlock it to something immovable. Get a big-ass heavy-duty padlock too. Bolt cutters are a bitch.

If you have an expensive bike, insurance is always the best. I wouldn't bother for anything I paid < $3k for.

is he afraid you are gonna be taking it for a spin when he is not around? If thieves want it bad enough to break into a garage, they surely will not mind cutting/picking a padlock or a chain lock.

^i told him the same thing. i've seen the videos, all a chain and lock is going to do is keep an honest person from taking it. also, its not a gsxr or r1 so the likelihood of it getting stolen isn't that high.

he's got an aprila shiver, i'll probably end up with a cheap sv650 or dl650. part of the deal is if he going to store it at my place i get to ride his bike whenever i want.

mine runs $150 a year on a fuckin fjr1300 for full insurance, you either have 30 tickets or are looking at the wrong company

I was looking at financing (it was a good deal at 1.99%) a $7000 bike (which would've required collision), and insurance was going to be $1780/yr.

I bought a $2300 bike w/o financing and insured it w/o collision for $370/yr.

Ridiculous.

^^Do you have comprehensive? Is your bike stored outside? Those things bump me from $20 a month to $80 a month, so I just forgo the comprehensive. I have Geico.

I haven't had any traffic violations in the last 5 years.

I dropped my bike and bent my shift lever. I took it off, bent it back, then reattached it.

Now it goes "CLUNK" from neutral to 1st or 2nd, accompanied by a barely detectable jolt forward.

I don't think it did this before. Is this ok?

I don't even know. I've you're taking about the actual cable, I didn't touch it.

If you're talking about the solid link between the lever and the... other... shift... thing... then it's entirely possible I screwed it up.

Well now that you mention it, I broke the clutch lever, too.

I didn't make any adjustments to the cable after I replaced the lever. How would I go about making sure it's properly adjusted?

Yeah, I thought you said something before about the clutch lever.

Read your owner's manual or a shop manual or just find directions on the internet. Basically you just adjust the slack at the handle and at the clutch assembly until it feels comfortable. Not so tight that it'll snap and not so loose that your clutch slips.

not that i've sat on that many bikes but from what i remember most of them clunk and/or lurch slightly from neutral to 1st...it'll randomly be worse sometimes, depends on how the gears happen to line up. i'd only be worried if you know for a fact that it didn't happen before you dropped it

Adjusting the clutch cable is usually very easy. It's just a matter of getting to the nut that needs to be turned.

I would think so. I'v enever been on a bike that didn't lurch a little when shifting out of neutral. Mine does it pretty bad when it's cold, but it goes away as it warms up.

Now that it's consistently cold, I'd like to suggest Firstgear's Hypertex suit. I have one and am VERY pleased with it. It's a little bulky, but you will stay warm and dry pretty much no matter what.

If your alternator puts out enough amps to power it and still charge the battery, it's fine. Most don't(especially at idle) and will leave you walking.

While on this topic, I hope that manufacturers of the first generation of electric motorcycles will have to not repeat GM's mistake and ghey down the electric motorycles to where they will look like obese and slow versions of gas-powered cousins. Hopefully they can go with the Fisker model and keep them ooking as close to the concept as possible. For a whil it ill be a niche market regardless, no need to appeal to broad masses. If they are heavier and slower, they need to at least look and feel more cutting-edge.

Out of curiosity, do larger manufacturer-sponsored dealerships hire seasonal employees, be they bike washers or sales people? Seems like almost all bike sales, not to mention parts and accessories, will take place in the summer. I need a summer job and I think working in the company of bikes would be kick ass, especially if I could sell them rather than scrub them. Any thoughts?
