i'm pretty sure this has already been discussed, but i don't feel like reading through 22 pages
i want a way to listen to my iphone over my car speakers. with my old ipod i used a cassette tape adapter, but the jack doesn't fit right in my iphone. i know they have the fm transmitter dealies, but i'd rather avoid that. nor does my stereo system have an aux input. i'd like to continue using the cassette adapter, but i need an audio jack extension or something so it'll fit without falling out every 2 minutes. do they even make something like that to fit an iphone? 1/8/2008 9:24:59 AM |

for calls, it's a national plan so roaming isn't a problem. not sure about international. data roaming can be an issue domestic if you're not in an area with good coverage. the phone warns you if you're about to data roam though, which is nice

and i've never heard of data roaming. i have an iphone and have done some travelling lately but haven't seen anything pop up on it that says "data roaming" or anything like that...and didn't see anything in the plans/paperwork about roaming 1/8/2008 10:26:25 AM |

this might be the more expensive way, but it doesn't fail
for my ipod, i just went to circuit city (only place that had it) and bought a modulator box for my honda that transforms input (plugged into the disc changer port on the back of my stereo) to red and white coaxial. CD1 is input 1 and CD2 is input 2. CD3-6 are non functional now. I just store the box in my glove compartment. I plug my iphone into a modded phono jack ( i just shaved some of the jack off (hahahaha) so it would fit into the fucking recessed jack port on the iphone. calls also go through the car speakers. the echo on the other end is non-existent if you adjust car speaker volume accordingly 1/8/2008 11:10:46 AM |

and the summary of ^ http://valleywag.com/343150/the-real-untold-story-of-the-iphone
Quote : | "In its February issue, Wired promises "The Untold Story" of the iPhone. But as typical for the magazine, they instead deliver a rehash of things you mostly already know, spread over 3,336 lavish words. Here, instead, are 378 words, in bullet points, containing the truly juicy tidbits Wired writer Fred Vogelstein was able to turn up. My favorite? That when Steve Jobs gets really mad, he doesn't scream. He stares.
* In the fall of 2006, in Apple's boardroom, the prototype flat-out didn't work. The phone dropped calls constantly. Jobs fixed the dozen or so people in the room with a level stare and said, "We don't have a product yet." The effect was even more terrifying than one of Jobs' trademark tantrums. * For those working on the iPhone, the next three months would be the most stressful of their careers. A product manager slammed the door to her office so hard that the handle bent and locked her in; it took colleagues more than an hour and some well-placed whacks with an aluminum bat to free her. * Just weeks before Macworld, Jobs had a prototype to show wireless boss Stan Sigman. Sigman, uncharacteristically effusive, called the iPhone "the best device I have ever seen." * About 40 percent of iPhone buyers are new to AT&T's rolls, and the iPhone has tripled the carrier's volume of data traffic in cities like New York and San Francisco. * In February 2005, in a midtown Manhattan hotel, Jobs laid out his plans before a handful of Cingular senior execs, including Sigman. Apple was prepared to consider an exclusive arrangement to get that deal done. But Apple was also prepared to buy wireless minutes wholesale and become a de facto carrier itself. * At one point, Jobs met with some executives from Verizon, who promptly turned him down. * Around Thanksgiving of 2005, eight months before a final agreement was signed, he instructed his engineers to work full-speed on the project. One insider estimates that Apple spent roughly $150 million building the iPhone. * Internally, the project was known as P2, short for Purple 2. * Whenever Apple executives traveled to Cingular, they registered as employees of Infineon, the company Apple was using to make the phone's transmitter. * Even the iPhone's hardware and software teams were kept apart: Hardware engineers worked on circuitry that was loaded with fake software, while software engineers worked off circuit boards sitting in wooden boxes. * By January 2007, when Jobs announced the iPhone at Macworld, only 30 or so of the most senior people on the project had seen it." |

I think in the next few months. I know there is a new chip I read about that will handle 3G and a better camera without making the phone any bigger..and it's better about power consumption than what was available when they decided to use EDGE over 3G originally 1/13/2008 2:14:28 PM |

My bets are on 3G, GPS, 16GB and a better camera. When that happens, I'll be getting one too (and switching to AT&T. btw, there's no f'ing way there will be removable storage 1/13/2008 6:42:43 PM |

removable storage is so 5 years ago. There is no reason you need removable storage. That just means you have to carry around more shit instead of one sync cable so you can access the music on your SD card. Unless you have one of the few laptops that have a built in card reader.
Its like saying why don't they put removable storage on removable storage 1/13/2008 7:12:57 PM |

not necessarily true. I do see the utility in removable storage, especially if you can just drop in an 8GB SD card (<$40 now) into the iPhone and use it to expand the system storage. The iPhone/iPod would use it just like the rest of its storage - completely transparent.

cost? no way it will be more expensive than the current cost. iPods, Macs, etc has almost always been like that. Next generation will have more features, more storage, more performance at the same cost as the last generation. At least the baseline model will. I don't think they will have multiple models, though, at least not based on features like GPS and 3G. Either all models will have those features, or none will. They already tried a 4GB and 8GB version, and apparently the 4GB sales were terrible. Maybe they will differentiate with 8GB and 16GB, or 16GB and 32GB models or something. I think the higher storage model will cost the same as the existing version, and the low storage one will be $50 less. 1/14/2008 10:49:33 AM |

I have a few questions, I read through most of the pages in this thread, but couldn't really find any clear answers.
1)- Can I edit mp3s on my computer, and make ringtones out of them, and load them onto my iPhone, or do you have to buy ringtones?
2)- When putting video on there, do you just load a standard video file, or do you have to convert/compress it or anything?
3)- Has anyone found a case that doesn't scratch up the chrome due to dust and lint getting inbetween the case and iPhone.
4)- Just how slow is the EDGE network? I read it was extremely slow starting out, but has gotten faster. What would you compare it to now? 1/14/2008 4:01:55 PM |

if you have a Mac, Garageband has an "Export as Ringtone" option that you can use on any sound file. i'mnot sure how to do it on a PC.

it's $400 now. In a year, who knows. Most likely not more. I'm guessing there will be at least one model at $300, and another at $400 with double storage. but it's anybody's guess1/14/2008 4:44:01 PM |

yeah, and that's exactly what I answered. If you have a Mac, you can export any sound file from Garageband to make a ringtone. On a PC, i don't know how to do it.1/14/2008 5:12:37 PM |

Garageband sends it directly to iTunes and adds it to your Ringtones playlist this was considered a recent "hidden feature", in that it was added to a small Garageband update and was not publicized. It does allow you to open any MP3 into Garageband, edit (trim) it, and export to iTunes. Presumably, this doesn't/wouldn't make the record labels happy, so I guess that's why they didn't make a big announcement or something
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307108 http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/iphone-users-get-garageband-ringtones-333940.php
ok, edit - it won't allow you to use protected AAC files. Only unprotected MP3s. But, if you use a way to get around the protection, like burning/ripping, then you can do it with any file http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/12066/
Quote : | "Drag and drop a song you own from iTunes into the main GarageBand window. Assuming that it’s an unprotected track, such as any MP3 or an unprotected AAC file, it will take a moment to import. If it’s a protected track, such as an iTunes Store purchase, GarageBand won’t import it, letting you know with the dialog box below." |
