He hates TOB but won't say it publicly. He knows he's in a much much better situation. No reason for him to have sour grapes. Although he could have gone into more detail about missing spring practice instead of just saying TOB decided to move on. That really says a lot. 10/4/2011 6:48:50 PM |

I'm thinking he's reluctant to bring up the Spring stuff to protect how he's viewed when it's time for the NFL Draft
if it looks like he won't be committed to a team drafting him (i.e. he still wants to spend time on baseball), an interested NFL team could avoid taking him sooner 10/4/2011 7:01:26 PM |

I think he's still part of the Rockies, according to an interview I saw/heard within the past couple weeks
im not saying he'll be able to do both, but in his mind he thinks he can

if RW does somehow win the Heisman...does Debbie Yow consider this at the end of the season for TOB?
This whole situation is epic NC State shit at it's best. 10/5/2011 10:57:04 AM |

^ Despite that oddly worded sentence, I'll attempt to answer. RW winning a Heisman would hurt his credibility (deserved or not). But, a fourth losing season in 5 years will be more damning. 10/5/2011 11:02:19 AM |

Him winning the Heisman should only impact her opinion of TOB in the sense that TOB couldn't put together the knd of running game that nicely compliments a QB like Wilson. 10/5/2011 11:02:52 AM |

Mandel's mailbag
Quote : | "Where do you think Tom O'Brien's decision to run off Russell Wilson ranks among the dumbest decisions in the history of college football? -- J.D. Bolick, Denver, N.C. Believe it or not, I understand what he was doing. It certainly looks dumb right now, but the fact is Wilson had offered little indication as of last spring that he'd be back for football season. Facing a possibility that his next quarterback, Mike Glennon, might transfer if made to wait on Wilson's decision, O'Brien did what he thought was best for his program's future. Unfortunately his current team is so bad in almost every area, I'm not sure how much future O'Brien has left. Even had Wilson stayed, he wouldn't be putting up the numbers he is in Madison if surrounded by the Wolfpack's underwhelming skill players, and he'd obviously be of no help to their horrendous, injury-plagued defense. It's good for college football that we get to see what Wilson can do with a strong supporting cast. It's not so great for NC State. However, I've received numerous e-mails and tweets from Wolfpack fans who say they're rooting for Wilson and the Badgers. They say he's a good kid very deserving of this shot. The dumbest quarterback handling I've ever seen remains Dirk Koetter in 2006 naming Sam Keller his starting quarterback one day, then changing to Rudy Carpenter the next, after which Keller transferred to Nebraska and all three of their careers went down the toilet.

He's also got a good point about the potential for upperclassmen to improve their draft status by hitting the books hard enough to graduate early.
Won't work for everyone, of course, but anything that helps encourage athletics right?
Also, how does Wilson affect graduations rates. Obviously he should be a positive mark for NC State, but he's not likely to get his masters degree in one year at Wisconsin playing football the whole time. Will that count against them, or is he a non-factor since he already graduated? 10/5/2011 12:34:03 PM |

I still don't get it all the BS.
RW wasn't "run out of town". What RW does at Wisconsin has no bearing on NCSU football. If RW was still at NCSU he 1) wouldn't be having the season he is 2) we'd still suck 10/5/2011 1:11:36 PM |

^yeah, there seems to be confusion.
Douchebag J.D. Bolic (who's probably a regular PP poster) asked a one-sentence question. Stewart Mandel gave a decent response, ahough i think he was being a little harsh. I think the team will prove in the next few games that we're not "so bad in almost every area". I think we'll prove to be "kinda bad in some areas".

I don't think it's that much of a stretch.
We have CMU, a bye week, and then Virginia. Two very winnable games, and three weeks to get back up to full strength. We should be returning most of our guys on D (assuming no more injuries, which is a BIG if) and Mustafa Greene could be back as well. Our D looks serviceable with just the return of Sweezy, and it very well could improve as the season progresses. Really, if we can get a win this week (we should, anyway) and then rest on the bye and get a win against Virginia, we're looking at a 4-3 team with FSU, UNC (at home), BC, Clemson (at home), and Maryland (at home) left on the schedule. If we go 3-2 during that stretch, we go bowling, which would be a helluva accomplishment given the start of the season.
