There’s a reason coaches get a bonus for making the NCAAT. Pretty sure Keatts didn’t get a bonus for making the NIT (unless it was for just total wins this season or something indirectly related to it).
The NCAAT is always the ultimate goal.

No but we might be able to sway from a team who just wins the NIT. Recruiting is a complex multi-faceted thing but do you think if Penn state competed wih us for a recruit this past fall, who would be more likely to reference the post season? If I'm a recruit, "we won the NIT" translates to "we couldn't make the tourny"3/30/2019 11:57:04 AM |

would those who are arguing that more games played is better than barely making the tournament be making the same argument in favor of the CBI Tournament? 3/30/2019 1:31:47 PM |

I wonder if the pro-NIT crowd is influenced by the lure of Reynolds. If we didn’t have home court advantage or only played 1 home game before going on the road, is the answer different? I’m curious. 3/30/2019 2:42:03 PM |

You act like recruits are too stupid to understand bubble teams, and that there are teams that barely get in or barely get left out each year.
^^No. The scenario here is basically for the 65th through 76th teams (if you assume a #1 or #2 seed will win the NIT). CBI is basically a bunch of teams outside the top-100 and way too far down the list for anyone to care about. Whereas the NIT features P5 teams who often had strong regular season resumes, and often only missed the tournament because of the committee's subjectivity.
^If we win 1 game in Reynolds, 2 games somewhere else, and the final 2 in MSG, there isn't much of a difference in having 3 home games. I mean the atmosphere this year was great, and I'm sure it impacts my opinion of this, but I didn't go to any of the games so it doesn't make that much of a difference from someone who watched them on TV

Sure they understand bubble teams but they also understand some coaches are better than others (Greenberg comes to mind as bad) at staying on the right side of the bubble.
It's a thin distinction, but every little advantage helps and vice versa.
Also being the NIT coach and saying "well they barely got in and we're barely left out" sounds like a sore loser, imo

For the perception of the program and for recruiting, making the NCAAT is better than not making it. If you wanna argue that, as a fan, it’s more fun to you to win the NIT than lose in R1 of NCAAT then I respect that...I’ll disgaree, but I respect your opinion. But for actually building a program and being relevant and for perception and recruiting...making the NCAAT is surely better
I have no idea what the financial impacts of the NCAAT vs NIT are, but again...I’d assume making the NCAA is better.

I'd always rather make the NCAA tourney than not. But if you know 100% for a fact that you're going to lose your first game, it doesn't sound as appealing. 3/30/2019 4:29:19 PM |

The entire scenario that was debated for the last page was:
Quote : | "Yea somebody asked me if I'd rather win the NIT or lose in Dayton or real first sound, I said def the latter" |
Probably because that's an interesting discussion.
Everybody is in agreement that making the tourney >> NIT when outcome isn't known. So that's not an interesting discussion.
[Edited on March 30, 2019 at 5:56 PM. Reason : Seems like after a TGL3-fueled departure to the latter we're finally back to the former.]3/30/2019 5:55:12 PM |

My answer remains that the NCAA is always > NIT. But I respect the difference of opinion. Also. We haven’t won shit in a long time. It’d be cool to win something, even if it’s a rather insignificant tourney. So I do see where y’all are coming from. 3/30/2019 6:44:16 PM |

Fine. A postseason tourney, specifically, is what I meant.

there’s some classic GOP bad faithism happening in here
in order to lose in the NCAA Tournament, you’d have to first make it, which is better than making/winning the NIT

^^I’ll hold your hand for this one:
in order to lose in the 1st round in the NCAA tournament, you’d have to make the NCAA Tournament, which is better than winning the NIT, because one tournament matters, and the other does not

Yea no shit thats my post. TG3 is outlining that exact scenario.
You keep reading every post with no nuance or inference in a way that let's you berate them for going off topic.
Like "nobody gives a shit" means you can find one person that disagrees to prove that wrong, instead of "nobody" meaning "i and people in general", like in 90% of usage of colloquial English.

So I think if we make the tourney the next few years, the luster of this year's NIT run will wear off and I'll go back to making tournament or bust mentality. But we also haven't gotten past the Sweet 16 in over 30 years, so I still don't think a first-round loss in the big dance is anything to really be proud of. Seen that one too many times already. 3/31/2019 4:39:25 PM |
