Alright i might get one. I've read a bunch of reviews and watched a bunch of youtube videos. It seems like it would be fun on google earth and i could even use it in photoshop and solid works.

there is no GPhone.
Google released "Android" last year, a mobile phone platform that phone makers can install on their phones, then developers can write applications for that should work across multiple phones.

don't know what the status of that is.... seems like interest kind of dwindled off after the announcement

^It's entirely different ... it's using your phone's camera to display the world, and using the GPS to overlay locations ... this is just the beginning of what will be possible.

yeah, that's really incredible.
You can imagine a whole community of people geo-tagging buildings, so when you go to NYC, for example, you will download (or link to dynamically) a database of NYC buildings. Then using the camera on your Android-enabled phone, you will point the camera at any building and the screen will pop up the name and information about the building or landmark.
I know this has been under development before using different, probably proprietary, technologies, but something open like this has a much better chance at taking off and transforming the tourism industry

they've added some new buttons to Maps

now in Maps there is a "More" button where you can enable Wiki markers and geo-tagged photos pulled from Panoramio.
Looks like they are integrating more and more mash-up behavior into Maps itself to make it more visible.
Also notice that the "Show Search Options" has been updated, and you can directly search stuff like Real Estate now

yeah, theoretically, this has all sorts of potential benefits. It will give people a way to stay on top of health risks, drug risks, drug interactions that your doctor or pharmacist aren't aware of.

They will also aggregate data and will/can show you, for example, how your health compares to others in your demographic, in your city, age group, etc.

It all depends on how Google handles your data, and how secure they are, or are perceived to be. On major criticism I've already heard is that Google Health doesn't seem to have any additional security measures than the rest of your Google Account. More and more services are being grouped under a single-signon Google Account, so if lose or someone gets ahold of your Gmail password, they really have access now to an incredible amount of information, from your Calendar, Google Documents/Spreadsheets, Analytics accounts (webpages you manage), AdSense/AdWord accounts, Web History, Search History, and now your Health info (if you choose to add it).
For particularly sensitive data like your Health info, I think it would be beneficial to have a secondary signin requirement, like an additional PIN or something to access Health after you're in your Google account.

i'm all for doing research, but anything that gives too much information to the user without ways of interpreting the information can be risky. this happens ALL the time in medicine and building industry... people want to learn about something so they go and google it, come to find out information about topic but 90% of the time misinterpret it, or aren't looking up the correct information.

my wife, father & brother-in-law are all in medicine and they tell me all the time about people coming into the exam room with stuff they pulled from WebMD and google and they have to waste 5-10 minutes RE-EDUCATING people because of crap like this.

i'm not saying it's 100% bad, it's just like other things, it's how you use it. it's a shame though that a majority of people won't use this tool properly.

yes, because all doctors and all pharmacists are aware of every drug interaction ever.

actually, a lot of people fail to disclose some of their medications or supplements to their doctors, or they use multiple pharmacists who don't have each others records, so they are not aware of conflicting drugs. People often skip over the "are you taking any other prescriptions" questions because they don't think other drugs they're taking are relevant, or sometimes they don't think they are taking "drugs" - for example over-the-counter supplements can have interactions or side-effects with drugs, but most people never tell their doctors or pharmacists about those. But if they enter them into Google or some other healthcare database instead, then they can still get flagged.


on the whole point of patients maybe knowing too much, or thinking they know too much - yeah, i agree that's a problem. I think the bigger problem, though, is the direct-to-consumer marketing that the drug companies are allowed to do now. Studying on webmd or google health about an ailment so you have an idea of what's going on is one thing, but having profit-driven drug companies throwing drugs in our faces all the time and either telling us all sorts of things they will cure, or sometimes never even mentioning what they are supposed to cure, is a huge problem for healthcare providers who are trying to make objective decisions.

i agree people should, and I have a 16 character password myself which I have never uttered aloud our written down anywhere.

But i think there still needs to be a "2nd wall" behind your normal google account and more sensitive pages on your google account. Especially because Google doesn't even have any enforced password guidelines at all. The problem is that people who are not worried about their account passwords because they don't know they should be are precisely the ones who are at the most risk.

^^it's their JOB... that's part of a pharmacist's job description... i'd put a lot more value into the information THEY have at their disposal via various databases versus the information Google has... but that's just my opinion.. they very well could have the same information... again i trust the professional over myself... i only use additional information to confirm, not to 2nd guess.

and if you aren't fully disclosing your medications to your physician and/or pharmacist, you're an absolute MORON!

i do have to say that if you do spend the time to input all your information, that Google health could probably give you the same information a physician can, but of course your doctor visits are only 15 min., whereas you could probably reach a further depth of knowledge when you have more time to read the information on your own.

Google Earth Browser and Plugin API released. This is pretty huge. I can't seem to test it out on my POS Windows 2000 work machine, but it looks like you can get a pretty functional Google Earth inside the browser (similar to MS Virtual Earth, i suppose)
