this is my cat Ellie, I really really miss her. She's living down in Apex with my ex. She loves him and he loves her, so when I left him, I thought it would be best to let him have her. I know she's extremely happy and wouldn't be as happy if I had driven her 9 hours and stuck her in a small apartment with her arch-nemesis (my other cat) but then I see a pic of her on his FB and I remember how much I miss that silly cat.

I'm torn because it seems to be everything I do NOT want in a job.. So now the question is, do I go for jobs where I will be happy and yet have to move away from family or go to a job near family and friends but work at a job that is not ideal, or even close to it? 11/15/2011 3:01:30 PM |

well you already live far away from family and seem to be doing alright. I'm worried Eric will have a nervous breakdown though. He should want you to be happy though. 11/15/2011 3:04:44 PM |

Well we have already talked about it and he doesn't want me coming to Raleigh just to take a job I'd be miserable at...
The only plus is it would pay much, much more than what I would be getting at an academic institution 11/15/2011 3:06:31 PM |

I really don't want to speak to my mother or sister anytime in the next two months... AT ALL. Both will give me shit if/when they hear that B and I are visiting his family and then staying in charleston for our one and only holiday vacation, rather than coming to see them.
Frankly, now that the big family event of the year is over, I could do without seeing them for an indeterminate amount of time. 11/16/2011 6:05:51 PM |

take the good job. you'll spend a LOT more time at work than you will with your family in the first place. if you're very unhappy with your job, you'll probably be unhappy for a good amount of the rest of your time too.11/16/2011 10:43:45 PM |

Take a job you will be happy at. You can always visit your family and friends, but you can't exactly get away from a bad job unless you quit altogether.
And it's time to cut the cord anyway. It seems very common for people in North Carolina to live in NC their entire lives. If you let family and friends hold you back from experiencing new things, you're really just hurting yourself. 11/19/2011 2:43:20 PM |

I am bummed that I won't get to see the only two people on my side of the family that I enjoy being around, but I will not feel guilty about keeping my distance from the rest.
At least, I will try not to feel guilty. :sigh: 11/21/2011 6:18:24 AM |

while i agree, it's not just an NC thing... i see this everywhere i have lived. i think it's just humans
my view is that you can always go home & as you get further along in life & start having kids and parents start to age it becomes more compelling to go home. so why not try new things and experience new places?
moving is not for everyone though, it can be very difficult and challenging and you miss out on a lot of the little things. you also build stronger (but fewer) relationships because it's no longer "easy" to keep up with people.11/21/2011 9:12:29 AM |
