New Personal best @VIR Full today in the '92 Civic: 2:26.15.

Should be able to hit 2:23 if I can pull a clean run and consolidate my fastest sector times together...

^that sucks man, bad luck there with the rain.

17th & 18th we had ice both mornings. Thankfully Hiro & I's group didn't go on track until 9:30

Had a new personal best of 2:25.20 with an average speed of 86.7 mph. Little over 5 seconds faster than last year. Hit 140 a few times on back straight. Suspension upgrades helped out big time. If my downshifting wasn't complete garbage I could easily shed a few more seconds. Same if I had the balls to keep my foot flat on the floor for the entire front straight

Tires are the weak point at this time. Fronts are over 2 years old

Nice dude, that's a huge improvement.

They often do, but not as much as your driving and the temperatures may have.

Quote :

Bet not, I'd be surprised the difference wouldn't be more than two seconds, if you're really terrible to begin with...

Quote :

Yea, I'd say so... But you could always make a # you're comfortable with your self imposed top speed and it'll make the improvement in the rest of your driving even more prevalent.

^Haha, hitting a new high top speed is always fun. Of course, it's not all about just numbers. But still thrilling.

Weather conditions were almost identical to last year (same event as last year, same dates). Mostly sunny, temperatures within 10°F of one another.

With the down shifting, I spend a lot of time coasting and braking early. Of course if I were able to maximize that with proper shifting my tires probably would just go out earlier (2+ year old Michelins).

I kept my instructor for almost the whole event instead of going solo much because I wanted to work on smoothness and consistency.

Brakes and cooling ducts were a huge help. Before, rear drums were barely getting warm and hardly doing any work. It appears that the rear disks show heat in them (minor bluing). Brakes were MUCH better, fronts rotors looked fantastic (brake ducts did their job keeping them cool). Brakes are still not where I want them to be. I've replaced everything and the pedal still feels very soft, though I can lock the brakes up. Maybe it's just a 90's Honda thing...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNpuJrpLyQ8

The telemetry exported from my phone is interesting ballpark; I had some issues with consistent GPS reception and video/data synchronization. I believe the car can do 2:20 and I'd like to see myself get there. I'm not as hard on the brakes as I could be and that's a confidence thing. Between that and improving my lines, I believe I can do it...

Shoutout to Ahmet for bringing the inspiration when he drove me around VIR in his Mini...

So this 92 Civic and a Cayman S with a yuge suspension upgrade are neck and neck?

I know nothing about track cars etc but is this the meeting pointing between an insanely low curb weight approach and a higher HP/higher $ approach?

It's the difference between a guy who is driving the piss out of his car compared to a guy with a nice car and respecting it.

I don't want to speak for him, but I doubt TKE-Teg is driving his Porsche nearly as hard as I am the Civic. I'm going 9.1/10. Driver skill and aggression equal, the Cayman S would own my 92 Civic...

^not sure right now. But not in 2018.

Thanks for the kind works Hiro. You've advanced a lot as a driver as well!

The Cayman rotates so easily. Makes me a bit nervous going through the uphill esses and the kink/dip part of the front straight. Additionally, I probably go about 10 mph too slow through Turn 10, mostly because that's where I wrecked my BRZ

Next time I'll probably have better tires but I don't want to go too sticky because then I may have oil starvation issues, and I don't feel like upgrading the sump right now.

Yeah... I'm pretty confident I had some kind of oil starvation going through Uphill Esses... Accusump is definitely on the list. Other Honda owners have noticed oil starvation issues in that section of VIR...

My civic would suffer intermittent power loss through that section at higher speeds with maintenance throttle (~50%) and motor turning 6-7k rpm. Symptoms were not replicated anywhere else on the track. I'm guessing I'm losing oil pressure climbing uphill, thus disengaging the VTEC cam. I may have to baby it up through that section until I can install the accusump 2019. I don't suspect electrical, and ruled out fuel with keeping the tank above 1/2 full. Never have a problem on the back or front straight... I don't have a way to see what my fuel/oil pressures are though

I might be able to do THSCC' annual Frozen Frenzy event in 2019 (VIR Full and VIR Grand Course). Usually that's in February... We will see.

Hiro you mentioned going 9.1/10, but in your video you brake on T1 before the markers even start. are you really that underbraked considering how light the car is?

So the telemetery doesn't synch well with the video, part user error part bad cellular 1Hz GPS data capturing. For turn 1 I brake at the 5 marker (+/- 1/4 marker)... I could brake harder and possibly later like at the 4.5 or 4, but I just don't have faith in that brake zone for some reason. I've tried braking at 4.5, but I always feel uneasy about it like I'm overcooking the corner. Brake zones are a confidence thing that I don't quite have yet.

My brakes in the car has always felt soft. I don't know why, I've tried everything and have replaced everything. I also brake check halfway down the front and back straights to make sure I don't go into a brake zone at speed with no brakes. A good practice for any track day imo. It's an HPDE after all, not a race. It's the amount of pedal travel to the feedback that I receive that bothers me. Wish it was a lot firmer... I'll have to let Ahmet or Pat drive around and play with it.

I thought about adding oil... I may do the half a quart trick and see if that helps...4 qt system isn't a whole lot to begin with, so adding 12-25% more oil may be enough.

Who has ever looked into running rental cars at track days? You can rent some pretty suitable stuff from lots of places nowadays--not just when Hertz gets a wild hair.

Avis and Budget rent Corvettes and Mustangs GTs (I think the Mustangs are manual, too). Enterprise does Corvettes and Boxsters. Hell, Hertz even rents C7 Z06s (for a fairly reasonable rate) or a 911 (for a much less reasonable rate), but their rental agreement specifically forbids operation on a racetrack, and says the insurance is voided if you are violation of the agreement.

My credit card (Chase Sapphire Reserve) offers up to $75k of primary insurance (i.e., you don't even have to file a claim on your regular policy). It has some restrictions, like you can't be in breach of the rental agreement.

Why not just rent an actual race car? There are plenty of people/places that will rent you an actual race car if you have the budget and credentials.

Better credentials equals smaller budget required.

GMP based out of Charlotte (German Motoring Performance) has a track prepped Cayman that they rent out. $2000 per event or $3000 for full support staff all weekend, including delivery of vehicle to any track in southeast.

https://www.gmpperformance.com/

Owner's name is Steve. Pretty cool guys, spent most of the last PCA track event hanging out in their tent in between sessions.

Pretty sure Drivegear LLC will still rent you a SpecE30 for a NASA weekend or for a HPDE.

Lots of Champcar/Lemons/AER teams will rent seats for races. Prices anywhere from 400/2hr to $1200/2hr for champcar, Lemons likely cheaper and AER likely higher.

I didn't know you could readily rent a seat in a Chump or LeMons team...I thought you had to get a team together, and it was pretty much on you to do it.

Nope, lots of teams will let you in with nothing more than a fat(ish) wallet.

More competitive/well prepped teams will want some documented HPDE and W2W experience.

you break it you fix it is the normal policy. Some have damage deposits, some are trust based.

Hmm...I wonder what the definition of "break" is?

Smack a tire barrier? OK, that's definitely "you broke it."

Another car smacks you and doesn't pay? Contact that isn't clearly anyone's "fault?"

What about if shit just breaks, because you're racing and it's a shitty car?

I guess even if you totally wad it up, you can't be out very much money, by definition. haha

You are in control of the car and its not a mechanical failure - you are responsible.

You spin and hit the wall = you pay for repairs

Another car spins and hits you = you pay for repairs

You find 3rd instead of 5th = you pay for repairs

The engine loses oil pressure and your footage doesnt show something dumb = off the hook

Im trying to decide what diff gear to run for a race in April with no practice.

We are running the full roval with no chicanes, so turn onto the oval at T1 and go WOT all the way to the S/F, then hard on the brakes into the infield.

Any idea if V-Max is into T3 or at the SF? DO you have to lift in T3/T4? This is a 2000lb car with 175hp. gear limited somewhere near 140mph with the shortest rear end. Don;t want to be riding the rev limiter for a 14 hour race though.

Hi. I've been away from TWW for a while. Here are some vids from my 2018 shenanigans in the 981.

VIR - Feb 2018
2:24 lap while "battling" w/ a GT3 in traffic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9ru-MN89X0

Well, at least in my mind it was a battle. He was probably driving at 7/10. You can really see the speed differential b/w the two cars on the back straight. Was fun keeping up with him nonetheless.

Personal best 2:21 lap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbq-KIq0Njo

Dominion Raceway w/ MBCAA - August 2018
First time ever on this track... love the technical infield section. Doing a course besides VIR made me fall in love w/ the 981 all over again.

1:42 lap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24eRQ33ZDf0

BONUS: I gave a fellow 997 in my run group a [somewhat late] point-by, which led to a fun moment:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r57XX5gya1w

This year, a buddy and I are planning to enter into NASA's Honda Challenge series with a 91 HF Civic with a H22 swap that we've been working on for the past 18 months. Car is done and just needs suspension tuned. Will likely look to enter into a February-March open track event to test n tune. Will let the 981 relax her legs until maybe the fall...

That's the same configuration I was running. My Vmax on the oval was about 130 mph, but before T3/4 and before S/F (stock S2000). I braked before T3/4, usually down to 115-120. I'm not sure if I needed to brake there, but I just didn't have the balls to see if the car would stick. Your car's power to weight ratio is pretty similar to an S2000's but I'm guessing it'll have better grip (R comps? I was running Star Spec Z1s) and maybe downforce? If you can take T3/4 without braking at all (or scrubbing only 10 mph or so) then there's definitely a chance you'll hit your limiter.

My opinion at least; I know very little else about your car.

Any ideas for where I might rent something trackworthy for Barber Motorsports Park? I’m getting married at the Barber Museum on the 23rd. There’s an HPDE that weekend; I’d be interested in lapping as the schedule permits (prob on Sunday).
