Glad it's working for you so far. Since you haven't used it with drums yet, be aware of the fact that the headroom can go away sort of quickly, but know this trick: you can dial a good part of the gain out of the clean channel if need be just by lowering the mids. It's a very mid-heavy amp, and once it's pushed into distortion it'll clean up a lot just by taking that chunk out of the sound. In fact, if that ME-70 has a multi-band EQ, you might be able to dial a lot of it back through focused EQ tweaking without losing much of your desired tonality at all.
Anyway, isn't it nice to get that much versatility out of something that's cheaper than a nice cab? 12/6/2010 11:51:13 AM |

^^Appreciate the tips man.
And yea the ME-70 has the 4-band EQ which should give me a lot of tweaking room I'm hoping. It's definitely nice to pick something up like this for cheaper than I was even looking at paying for a 2x12.
Honestly, with the pedal in front of it for EQ purposes, I don't see any reason that I won't be using this as my home practice amp even for CTA material. It really sounds better for those songs than the little solid-state amp I have kept around to play at low volumes when I lived in apartments for years. Now that I own a home, I can get this V32 up to respectable volumes without a second thought of neighbors and the tone through detuned guitars with active pickups is not half bad for metal

Talking to someone on Craigslist. The guy doesn't know a ton about guitars and is selling a bunch of guitar stuff near me. Everything he has listed is really dirt cheap prices. For example he is asking $110 for an Epiphone SG that TO ME looks like the G-400. He is at work and doesn't know the model # off hand so I'm going to have him check it but this is the picture:
1) $110 for a G-400 is a pretty solid price correct? I usually see them used around $200.
2) any opinions on whether that is a G-400 just based off that small picture. The cheaper models (Specials) don't have the same style pickguard, if any at all, and the other big SG epiphone makes (310 maybe?) has the full pickguard I think. I could be wrong though. The only other ones I know off are the faded and/or vintage models of the G400 which I know are slightly cheaper than the straight G400 but I don't recall why.
Also, I don't know if the Epiphones say the actual model on the headstock or anywhere so I was trying to find out the ways to distinctly tell which model it was when I see it in person if he doesn't know still.

I want to at some point get a solid actual nice guitar that will do more than just metal. My ESP is close but its super light and doesn't have that thick sound that SGs and LPs have, but i'm way too poor for either of those right now.

Yea. I would love a Gibson SG or LP but I just don't feel like spending the money, hence the looking at Epiphones. I have had my eye on an SG for years, but since I don't need one for anything I've just been waiting for a great deal and ran across this.
My S prestige is a pretty versatile guitar but I have been keeping my buddy's Telecaster at my place lately to use as well. Throw an SG in there and I think I'd have a lot of bases covered.

Definitely. The one I'm borrowing plays pretty nice. We used a great little G&L one on our last record for almost any part that had full chords (ie not a lot of riffing) for the rhythm guitar. 12/9/2010 4:16:25 PM |

Picked it up tonight. $110 for the guitar, strap, and brand new Epiphone hard case. I have to figure out exactly what model it is but it is definitely one of the nicer Epiphone ones. 12/9/2010 7:14:57 PM |

I often wish I had decided to be a drummer instead of a guitarist. Not out of enjoyment, rather because it is always so hard to find a decent drummer who is interested in doing a part-time type gig.
It seems like all the good drummers near me are looking for high-commitment type projects and the only ones interested in 1 practice a week type gigs are not very good. To make matters worse, the ones that are decent and interested near me all seem to be interested in country or terrible contemporary praise and worship.
/musician blog
PS I am continually surprised at how many "drummers" there are out there who can't keep a steady beat. Maybe I was just spoiled with the amount of decent musicians in NC when I was growing up... 12/16/2010 4:11:13 PM |

haha, well I'm not looking for marco minnemann or anything. We're just looking for a drummer who can keep a good beat and is interested in more straight up rock (pixies, built to spill, early weezer, arcade fire, etc.).
Obviously I understand there are people out there who are wanting to practice several days a week and gig every weekend and that's fine but I'm just surprised I've had the trouble finding someone decent with a similar agenda as the 3 people I have together right now. Myself, the other guitarist, and the bass player all click really well and are on the same page as far as time commitment for the band goes. I guess we just got lucky meeting each other.

Welcome to the world of respectable music .
I found my new favorite fuzz pedal...I accidentally plugged a regular EHX power supply into my old Boss PH-1 Phaser (which is supposed to use an old ACA supply). It no longer phases, but it makes an awesome old-school fuzz (think "Satisfaction") whether it's turned on or not. Good times. 12/16/2010 7:21:09 PM |

Looks like we might have found a drummer and might start working on some originals in between practicing the weezer covers. Really hoping the drummer works out. He's a nice guy who is an acquaintance through various means to the 3 of us currently playing. None of us knew he played drums until last week though. Funny how that works out sometimes. Although trying out someone you already know is sort of a double-edged sword: If they work out it is worlds better than finding someone on craigslist, but if they aren't what you are looking for it just makes it that much more awkward.

You can find a used one for $250-275, and get all your money back out if you find you don't use it. As far at the money goes, it's a pretty safe experiment.
However, I think this is cooler, all-analog, and only runs $60:
Granted, it's much less versatile, but I found myself skipping a lot of the arpeggiated and pad sounds on the MicroKorg. 12/30/2010 12:19:11 PM |
Kris All American 36908 Posts user info edit post |
^I think most people would be happier with the sounds they get from those than the more complicated synths, and they're easier for a "guitar guy" to work considering they have basically the same components as some of the pedals. As far as the super-simple 1-osc synths, I like the Gakken SX-150, it only has 2 resonance controls, but it has a simple envelope in addition to the LFO, but the Monotron is probably easier to aquire and looks a bit better. 12/30/2010 1:15:54 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
The main things for me is realtime controls. I preferred my Novation K-Station to the MicroKorg because 90% of its controls were assigned to a knob and it was easier to tweak while playing, despite the fact that the Korg sounded better. There's also a personal bias element, as I don't think I've ever kept a piece of digital music gear for more than a couple months before I ditched it for a comparable analog piece. 12/30/2010 7:30:38 PM |
CalledToArms All American 22025 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, I can definitely understand that bit about the knobs. I bought the Boss ME70 over any of their GT series multifx for that same reason. The ME70 is set up with tons of knobs for realtime adjustment whereas the GT series (while offering more in general) is only edited through buttons and the little digital screen. 12/30/2010 7:47:53 PM |

Bought myself a USA-made V32 1x12 combo today. I missed the head I had and the price was good.
I'm simultaneously disappointed and relieved that I like it more than my Carr amp. While I think the Carr sounds objectively "better" (a little crisper, and a touch more bass from the quality speakers), I prefer the sound of the Crate. It's a little gutsier all around, which is what that Vox sound is all about. 1/18/2011 4:00:30 AM |

My bass player picked up an Ibanez Tube Screamer this weekend. Live he has a different overdrive and fuzz pedal setup he'll use but it is always nice to have a TS around (at least imo) and it was a great deal. I think I'll make our other guitar player use it live since it definitely sounds better than his current overdrive. He is using a great little fender amp that sounds really good with cleans and also a little of that dirty, bluesy overdrive. However, for a lot of the weezer songs we are doing we just need a thicker overdrive and I think a TS will really help.
