From what I understand your metabolism spikes when your eat, burning calories to digest the food. By spreading meals out through out the day you keep your metabolism up. I also like that even though they are small meals, by the time I'm hungry it's time for my next meal. If I get hungry before, I just drink water to suppress the hunger. I usually drink 12-15 cups of water just while at work. Additionally I never feel bloated of overly full. Even if the whole metabolism thing is an Internet myth, even though I've heard this from professional trainers in person, I like the way it's worked out for me and how I'm feeling.

The thermogenic effect of food is directly related to the amount of calories consumed (macro-nutrient type influences this too)... Not the act of eating. Holding calories equal, eating 2 large meals is the same as 5 small with regards to metabolic effect.

It's been found that 3 meals handles satiation/hunger most effectively compared to lower and higher frequency eating.

Drinking a lot of water prevents bloating as it causes you to release excess retained water.

FYI: I'd say about ~80% of professional trainers don't know much beyond typical bro-science.

In the end, the most effective diet is the one you are compliant with. So if that strategy works for you, keep it up!

You should see some of the trainers at the globo I have been going to. Not only do they look out of shape, all but one put their clients through the most worthless workouts. I think my favorite is the guy hitting on his client the whole time while he has her doing dumbbell shoulder presses with a five pound dumbbell and she is just talking to him the whole time.

Yeah frequent meals wont increase your metabolism and will actually impede fat loss once you get to low bodyfat levels.

But in the meantime calories in vs calories out is the most important thing.

If anyone is actually serious about increasing their metabolism I challenge you to go do a workout of nothing but squats, bench, dead lift, and pull ups. Then tell me you're not fucking starving the next 24 hours. Really cant beat those exercises for fat loss

Finally a diagnosis. Confirmed Hashimoto's. at this point I'm on a "wait and see" because while antibodies are attacking and destroying my thyroid, my thyroid levels (for now) are normal. This explains the irregular heartbeat and night sweats -you go through periods of "attacks" that happen at night which it seems my body is/was doing. I have to keep up with diet and exercise and watch it with the gluten. Hopefully what I'm doing can either slow down or prevent me from going on meds but the doctor said eventually I'll have to since my thyroid will eventually crap out.

Good news but not great news. Yay Monday.

I'm glad you finally found your answer though. It's not a death sentence, you'll just need to learn how to manage it.

Don't do any crazy diet or overtrain, you'll just decrease your metabolic capacity. The weight will come off, just be patient.

Thanks fitness friends

It's good that I know where to start and what I can do to make myself feel better, but it's still daunting. Hopefully by leading an active and healthy lifestyle for the last few years has kept my thyroid in check enough that I won't need medication (or at least for a long time). I'm hoping adding in gluten-free options will help a lot (although I am pretty much g-free now just because I can't tolerate yeast - or maybe it was gluten all along). Regardless I have to be more careful because I'm at a higher risk for type I diabetes and Addison's disease.

Fun.stuff.

Sorry to hear that cass glad you were able to figure it out and possibly limit the effects.

Squatted 225x3 yesterday at 168 lbs not too bad for just starting a month ago but my deadlift has kinda stalled at 205 I dont think ive perfected the form enough and im definitely not getting enough sleep.

Geez the squat bar feels heavy as shit on my back and shoulders at just 225. Like the movement isnt that heavy just the pressure on my back. Think im done increasing the weight for now until I gain more mass to support it.

Decided im doing a 12 day RIP GIRLFRIEND diet starting today since its supposed to get nice outside this week finally and ive got a belly again.

168.5 lbs, 20.5% bodyfat on scale starting (mirror looks like 17-18% to me).

Gonna aim for 280g protein with minimal fat/carb intake and lots of long walks. Theres a trail beside my new place thats like 20 miles or something crazy so that should help

Haha well I have a small frame. Not really looking to crush myself under the bar. I need bigger shoulders to rest the bar on first

^^I deadlifted 415x3 today at 164lbs. It's your core strength beginning to buckle under heavy load. Trust me, when your core begins to deflect because its overloaded, it feels HEAVY.

Back off on the squat weight to something you can do with perfect form but is challenging. Work on fixing your dead lift. Progress slowly and fix your out of the gym behaviors.

Yeah thats a good point that it may just be my core strength starting to feel overloaded. I was doing like 105 lbs 3-4 weeks ago and adding 10 lbs or so every workout so maybe I need to just maintain and do a lot of reps for awhile at like 185 which feels light.

Deadlift I think im using my arms too much because I hate putting pressure on my knees. Anyway gonna cut like 8 lbs of fat in 12 days then start doing higher reps for the summer. Ill go back to bulking after summer is over.

^Bro, there is so much nonsense in that post I don't even know where to begin.

You'd do yourself a huge favor by hiring me to help you fix your movements and set you on an effective recomp program.

In the deadlift your arms act like ropes and your knees are only doing <25% of the lift. It's all about the hips (glutes and hammies) with an immovable core.

Losing 8lbs of fat in 12 days means your running a 2,333calorie deficit. Good luck with that hoss.

Not too worried about achieving the deficit ill be eating about 1, 500 calories a day while doing full body "heavy" workouts twice a week. On the non lifting days ill be walking ~8-10 miles for additional calorie expenditure.

My main concern is trying to maintain muscle mass so ill end the diet quickly after 12 days.

Then ill start eating just above maintenance while doing sets of 10-15 reps with short rest in between sets. Im going to be small either way this summer but id rather be tan and lean than fat.

Weightlifting is a skill, and like all skills, technique is important. Technique can be learned on your own, but it's more risky and will take longer to master. Even with instruction, mastery takes a decade or more.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt that way. I'm no newb to the gym, just this thread, and I don't really see myself as knowledgeable enough to dish out advice, but that post seemed all kinds of wrong.

8 lbs of fat in 12 weeks seems not only unrealistic, but dangerous. You're not exactly starving yourself with 1,500 calories a day, but when you factor in the additional calorie burn you'll have to factor to burn an additional 2,300 you're body is going to start cannibalizing itself.

I don't see anything wrong with that. I've picked up clients and gigs on TWW and in this case, it's clear that some people could benefit from a trainer.

I've somehow developed a diet where all I do is eat one large meal a day.

Not sure what effect this is having on me, but I feel like I look better, but who knows (or cares).

I see nothing wrong with Matt offering his services to face. It sounds like face needs someone like Matt to help him with his deadlift technique. No reason why face should not be doing more than 205 on deadlift if he is able to squat 225 three times.

No im just willing to be a lot more meticulous with my diet and LISS than most people.

That being said I will be skipping walking tomorrow night to go out for free drinks Wednesday with a cool dude I havent seen since September. That will cost me a lb of fat loss so 7 in 12 days.

Im 168.5 this morning upon waking up. I figure in 12 days ill be about 155. 1.5 bls lbm, 5 lbs water, 7 lbs fat

Bro I work 50 hours a week and avg 15 drinks a night and 6 hours sleep. Very very few can keep up with me. I had 20+ last Tuesday and was at work at 9 AM.

Yikes I may have to scale it back to walking three times a week instead of five. No way I could recover enough to squat/dead tomorrow at full strength. Ill just have to restrict my calories a little more.

2:08 walk today roughly 8 miles. My natural pace is around 4.2 mph but I tried to scale it back a little. Ideally id hit ike 3.3 but I just get so bored im sure I prob didn't drop below 3.7. I wasnt depleted today so hopefully I didnt overdo it.

For those of you doubting if YOU can lose fat quickly thats fine. But I know I can.

If you aren't willing to eat nothing but chicken, whey, egg whites, broccoli, fiber, and supplements then youre right YOU may not be able to lose fat quickly.

If you aren't willing to quit running and quit eating fruit and starches (even vegetables) then YOU can not lose weight quickly.

If you aren't willing to walk several hours a week and get plenty of vitamin d and fish oil maybe YOU cant lose weight quickly.

If you arent willing to take so many goddam stimulants during the day that you need benzos and melatonin to fall asleep then YOU can not lose weight quickly.

RIP GIRLFRIEND.

I don't think anyone doubts that it can't be done, just that it's a good decision. Nothing can be gained by crashing like that.
Already on this page you've admitted to starving yourself to drop weight, drinking excessively (100+ drinks a week) and sleeping very little. This may seem like fun in the short term, but any physical rewards you get through this kind of lifestyle will be short lived. If you're lucky enough to survive inevitable kidney and/or liver failure, you'll find it more much difficult to maintain a doctor prescribed diet that will keep your kidney or livers from failing again.

face is a freaking trip. His stuff in ST is legendary and now he's bringing it to the fitness threads. Sometimes he post things that are easy to agree with and understand, then other times he post things that make you shake your head and wonder what type of drugs he's taking.

I still don't understand why he's trying to drop so much weight so quickly unless he is a fat ass. And even if he is a fat ass, dropping 7 lbs is not going to make you that much less of a fat ass. Just focus on building some muscle and eating right to make yourself look better.

Also good luck on another TWWer actually meeting this guy. I'd pay money to hang out with him one weekend based on the stories he's dropped in ST.
