Hodge was never a sure fire pick because of his weight issues and poor shooting ability. His best option was to transition into a tall PG type, so him coming back was prolly the best decision. He was just never gonna be a Tayshaun Prince/Francisco Garcia type because he could never dial in his shooting. 3/30/2014 6:21:10 AM |

Glad he at least made the 2nd team. I saw some earlier All American projections where he was only third team ... others where he was only an honorable mention.
Hard to argue with McDermott, Russ Smith, and Napier, but Sean Kilpatrick and Jabari Parker getting the nod over TJ doesn't make much sense. Oh well though. 3/31/2014 3:21:47 PM |

I think the argument for Parker is how electric he was early on against stiff competition. TJ was clearly better during ACC play which is why he won POY, but when you factor in the non-conference play and level of competition, I don't think it's a terrible call. 3/31/2014 5:46:32 PM |

The best advice for State fans is to assume he's gone. Then when he hires an agent and can't return, you won't be surprised. And if the 0.1% chance that he stays comes true, you can be super happy. 3/31/2014 11:05:30 PM |

^Yeah that's going to be an issue for Warren. The ratings on him for the NBA are all over the place, I've seen him go as high as #14 and as low as 2nd round. He's a tweener and somewhat hard to predict for the NBA.
If I'm someone like Warren, I either declare with no agent or I wait on making a decision as late as possible to see exactly who does/doesn't declare for the draft. 4/2/2014 8:13:34 AM |

Wow I think TJ would be a great fit on OKC. With Westbrook in the lineup, him, Lamb and Reggie Jackson could all provide scoring with the second unit. I don't think TJ would step in right away, but late in the season he might be a legit scoring option for the second unit. 4/2/2014 10:21:21 AM |

Watched a video posted on another board breaking down Warren's game and how it translates to the NBA.
I think the hope is that he'll be an offensive spark off the bench for some contender, no way could he contribute major minutes. The video definitely blasted his 3-point shooting, rebounding, and defense. 4/2/2014 12:19:13 PM |

^That was just a BS reach by them to try to seem like competent talent scouts. They took three or four examples where TJ forced a shot, put it through slowmo and then extrapolated that to imply that the man who has basically beasted the ACC with his jumper for two years is a horrible shooter.
It is fair to say that his mechanics are not classical, but the numbers speak for themselves.

Taking the red colored glasses off for a second, College numbers don't always translate to NBA numbers. JJ Redick and Tyler Hansbrough were prolific scorers in college, and pretty meh in the NBA. Good enough to stay on a roster, but that's about it.
So, there's a precedent for considering that TJ might not be as effective/explosive in the NBA. That said, your point is well taken-- The analysis of a few cherry-picked plays doesn't prove anything any more than cherry picking his awesome plays and concluding that he's going to be the next Paul George.
Ultimately, we're gonna have to wait and see. 4/2/2014 1:13:19 PM |
thegoodlife3 All American 39298 Posts user info edit post |
to be fair, Redick is better than 'meh' in the NBA. Hansbrough definitely is, though
and we all know that Warren is as gifted of a scorer as we've seen, but what he does lack in other aspects of his game is exactly what he will need to become an above-average player in the NBA
I'm hoping for the absolute best and that he does improve, but I think some need to temper their expectations just a bit 4/2/2014 1:26:04 PM |
BobbyDigital Thots and Prayers 41777 Posts user info edit post |
better than meh, I'll agree-- but he's nowhere near where he was in college or met the expectations of what he'd be prior to the NBA. My only point is that it's not unfair to question whether TJ's game will translate to the NBA, given the precedents (not saying I think he'll be a bust by any means). 4/2/2014 1:40:36 PM |

What, you mean a guy who's team ran multiple screens every single possession for him in college doesn't score as much in the NBA? That's insane!
Also, they actually call traveling on Hansbrough in the NBA and he doesn't get all the bullshit foul calls he got in college. Anybody with half a brain knew he want going to be a star in the NBA.
Warren may never be an all star, but he can shoot/score and should be a solid a SF in the NBA (he is not a "tweener"). 4/2/2014 1:49:36 PM |

nbadraftnet has him going 11.
this is one of the most anticipated draft classes in a long time so doesn't common sense say to wait until next year? How could he possibly go down? Also, the only reason he's able to score so much in college without a good 3pt shot is because of the size mismatches that won't exist in the nba. 4/2/2014 1:49:59 PM |

^^If he's projected as 11 in what's being touted as one of the best classes in recent memory, doesn't that kinda speak for itself? Him being in this class and projected as a lottery pick shows just how good he is. There's not but so far to move up if you're projected that highly, and plenty of room to fall. Considering Lacey will likely shoulder some scoring load next year (even if Warren were to be back), it's unlikely Warren would put up the same numbers.
If you're projected that high, you should probably go.
And I agree with face ^, I think he will help his stock in the workouts

I wouldn't bet on that. Even when he was a Freshman and we had guys like Wood, Howell, Brown and Leslie, he still had games in which he put up huge numbers. This year he was constantly doubled team and still put up huge numbers. If he were to hypothetically come back next season then guess what? Huge numbers. His scoring would be easier as he can get more open looks. Also, he always find ways to score off the ball like with putt backs and steals. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a 50 point game.4/2/2014 2:39:32 PM |

We're all biased, but only because we've seen how amazing this guy is. Yeah, maybe his athleticism isn't elite and maybe his shooting needs some work, but TJ has tools that most basketball players just don't.
His instincts alone are worth a 1st round pick. He never really forces anything; just has a knack for making the right move and being in the right place.
He's also got incredible touch around the rim -- maybe the best I've ever seen. The reason those crazy floaters work for him is his touch. The ball can't help but go in.
His lateral quickness isn't great, but he's a much better athlete than he gets credit for. Plus he's really fast in the opening court. And he's already a decent shooter with pretty bad mechanics. If he straightens that out some, he can be a really really good shooter.
None of the Bob-Hornets fans I know seem to want TJ, but I'd take him in a heartbeat . He could add some big-time scoring off the bench to go along with Gary Neal. 4/2/2014 2:48:01 PM |

By the nature of our team and how much he played, he has good rebounding numbers but as far as skill level I wouldn't necessarily say it's one of his strong skills.

Warren is good at offensive rebounds. His defensive rebounding percentage is very low for a forward, because he doesn't bother to box out. Also because he leaks upcourt. 4/4/2014 10:11:51 AM |
