I think Cam is gonna start from day 1 in a run-heavy offense catering to his strengths as a mobile guy who can improvise. Similar to what Pittsburgh did with Rothlisberger.
If we are going run-heavy, as expected, it only makes sense to start a mobile QB to freeze up the DEs, which would give Stewart and DWill more room to run.7/26/2011 12:06:16 PM |

The Dolphins are expected to be in on Ahmad Bradshaw as well. " |

I say let him walk. A rebuilding team has no business paying two RB's top dollar. Stewart + Goodson is still a fringe top 10 tandem. 7/26/2011 1:13:02 PM |

It would only matter if that made the difference between 7 or 8 wins vs 9 or 10

we should have .500 on our radar regardless of how shitty we were last year, too much parity in the league] 7/26/2011 1:17:55 PM |

^^ pretty much how i feel. the RB position is the most expendable position in the league, but he means a lot to both the team and community, so i hope he stays for a reasonable price. he's getting older in running back years, but not having to carry the entire load over his career i think bodes well for his productivity, IF he can stay healthy 7/26/2011 7:08:44 PM |

As first reported right here (actually, we broke it on our Twitter page, which is closing in on 100,000 followers), the Panthers have agreed to terms on a six-year contract. Terms were not disclosed.
The deal can officially be signed on Friday at 6:00 p.m. ET.
We reported that the deal is worth $76 million over six years, with $32 million guaranteed. Of that, $30 million will be paid in a signing bonus.
Per Steve Reed of CarolinaGrowl.com, Panthers G.M. Marty Hurney, head coach Ron Rivera, and several members of the defensive coaching staff went to Miami on Tuesday to persuade Johnson to stay with the team.
The fact that the Panthers won’t have to give quarterback Cam Newton, the first pick in the draft, a contract with an increase over Sam Bradford’s six-year, $78 million contract made it easier for the Panthers to give $76 million over six years to Johnson. And that’s precisely the kind of thing the rookie wage scale was intended to promote. Moving forward, only proven players like Johnson, a four-year veteran, will get the truly big money.
Still, it’s hard not to wonder why the Panthers wouldn’t have simply coughed up $91 million over six years with $42 million guaranteed to keep Julius Peppers in 2010. As one personnel exec opined earlier this evening, Peppers and Johnson are in two completely different categories when it comes to their play. When it comes to their pay, their contracts are comparable.
The move also shows a true commitment by the Panthers to attempt to be competitive in the most competitive division in football.
The next question becomes whether the Panthers will devote any cap room to keeping running back DeAngelo Williams, who has said he wants to stay in Carolina." |

I know we offered to make Pep the highest defensive player in NFL history in 2009 and he declined
Why is Florio implying that he would've signed with us the next year? 7/26/2011 9:57:44 PM |
Prawn Star All American 7643 Posts user info edit post |
Panthers were in ultimate cost-saving mode last year. Richardson was bracing for a lockout and trying to lead by example.
Different year, different salary cap. But $76 million is a lot of goddamn money for a 1-year wonder. 7/26/2011 10:00:41 PM |

I guess we offered to make Peppers the highest paid defensive player in NFL history after the 08 and 09 seasons, both times we ended up franchising him. Point is, Florio acts like it was some foregone conclusion that Peppers would've signed a longterm deal with us.
And if Johnson sucks ass we won't have to pay him half of $76 million 7/26/2011 10:05:32 PM |

it did kind of strike me as odd to hear repeatedly on the drive that johnson MUST BE RE-SIGNED. i mean i know he's only 25 and had a great year, but it was only one year. i think he'll be good, but i'm not sure we'd be completely destitute if he'd gone elsewhere 7/26/2011 10:17:33 PM |
