Incident rate is one thing, but since the Osprey is often used for troop transport, the casualties or fatalities per incident are higher. 9/2/2023 6:59:04 AM |

53 holds twice as many troops right? And might have more incidents per fight hour, but has way less total US fatalities from what I could dig up.

Repost from the comments of your previously-linked incident rate article:
Quote : | "Let's compare a transport with the military aircraft with the highest accidents rates to claim it is 'safe.' For some perspective the V-22 Class-A incident rate is >10x as high as C-130 and 120x as high as a 737." |

US military grounds Osprey fleet after crash off coast of Japan kills 8 US airmen
https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/06/politics/us-military-osprey-fleet-grounded-crash-japan/index.html
Quote : | "The US military is grounding its entire fleet of V-22 Ospreys, a week after an Air Force CV-22 crashed off the coast of Yakushima Island, Japan, resulting in the deaths of all eight airmen aboard the aircraft.
Air Force Special Operations Command said in a release Wednesday evening that Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, commander of AFSOC, directed an “operational standdown” of the Air Force’s CV-22 fleet “to mitigate risk while the investigation continues” into last week’s crash. Naval Air Systems Command also said Wednesday it was grounding the Navy and Marine Corps’ V-22s out of “an abundance of caution” as the CV-22 crash is investigated." |

yeah, that doesn't mean the aircraft is fundamentally dangerous. I've seen other aircraft fleets, or parts of fleets (like from serial # __ to __ ) get downed a number of times. The USMC just downed some Ospreys a few months ago. T-45s and Hornets have been downed. Maybe T-6s...can't remember. It happens.
It's never a case of "This is a POS aircraft; let's not fly them anymore." It's usually something more like "We have had 3 airplanes in the last year shit a compressor blade in the engine for no apparent reason. They're all produced in the ____ location factory between the dates of ___ and ___, so we're ordering a 1 time borescope inspection of the compressor sections of all the jets, and all the jets produced in that location between those dates are down until they can have the compressor sections of their engines replaced with updated components."
or "we've had a much higher than normal rate of ____ failures recently and determined that the ____ in every case was worn/out of adjustment/dirty/etc, so alll the birds are grounded until a 1 time inspection can be performed. We anticipate this will take 2 days. Furthermore, a new maintenance requirement will be added to perform this inspection during every phase maintenance." 12/6/2023 10:52:46 PM |
