^^^^I don't see why its sad. Most of it takes very little effort and isn't decreasing the quality of life (in some ways it can be increasing). For example, bringing my lunch to work everyday saves a TON of money every year and I pack a lot healthier lunches for myself than I ever do buying from our cafeteria or buying food out every day. I bring my own breakfast and lunch and my wife cooks dinner every night.

Before I started doing that, I was buying all 3 meals and spending $15 a day on food easy. I now spend probably $5 a day on food and I'm eating better food. $5475-$1825 is a savings of $3650 a year for an increase in food quality. If you can tell me how that is sad, I'd like to know.

i stopped giving a fuck what it looks like a long time ago

if i order a 20 oz. porterhouse, i'm gonna eat the whole thing, as well as pay for it out of pocket and on the toilet (TMI) lolz

i'd rather spend my money in other places

I think it's smart, not sad. People spend money so mindlessly. I like to spend my money on travel/vacations.

So, I cut out sodas and spend that $200 on a weekend stay at the W South Beach.

Higher quality of life without wasting money on silly stuff.

So answer me this

You're at Outback with some friends

They all get a regular meal

and you get something from the kids menu

and they don't mock you mercilessly?

I just say, I'm not that hungry, I'll just have a kid's steak and add a salad

they might laugh, until the check comes...

^^ You care if your friends laugh at you?

My girlfriends and I usually split meals because portion sizes are just ridiculously large.

exactly. I think the other people in here are assuming we wear the same outfit for a month, eat rice cakes, and live in cardboard boxes. There is a lot of little stuff that takes hardly any effort that can save thousands over the course of a year.

I would care if I look like a social fucktard and a tightwad when we are all out to eat. How are you supposed to be a grown-ass-man if you're ordering a kids meal at a restaurant?

Wait wait wait

So the consensus here is that its cool for an adult to order off the kids menu

I thought it was just the one guy saying that, but its most of you?

I can certainly afford it. I make more than enough money. I don't order off the kids menu, I just dont have a problem with anyone that does. I just order a full meal, eat half, and eat the rest later.

Right, all the successful people in this country got that way by ordering the chicken nuggets off the “Little Joey” menu.

Most places have a policy that they won’t serve anyone over 12 off the kids menu to save you the embarrassment.

And yet you’ve found a way to circumvent this.

Bravo.

Jrb599, if you're in neutral your engine is idling around 1,000 rpm and you're still burning fuel. Coasting in gear = zero fuel usage. Now if you're talking about going down a hill sure you'd probably use less fuel if you let gravity accelerate you from a standstill. But in the process you'll probably get rearended by someone on a bicycle wondering why there's a car in the middle of the road going 10mph at the top of the hill

I eat out for lunch maybe 3-4 times a month. Most of the time I just get a cheap sub at HT which is just $3.25 w/tax.

I need to try this. Considering we have basically the exact same cars it should work. I downshift the entire sequence so that I am prepared to actually move should I need to.

We are describing pretty much the exact same thing.

You're picking one example out of several dozen in this thread. There is nothing wrong or sad about packing your lunch for work. If I had the time to do it, then I would. But I have almost two full time jobs, and get very little sleep most nights...that extra 15-20 minutes that I stay in bed and hit the snooze button is well worth it to me if I have to leave the office to buy a cheap lunch. That's why I don't do it...but I wouldn't say that's sad at all..you just picked that specific example.

What's sad to me?? Going around and unplugging almost all of your electrical devices before you leave the house for the day. Then having to plug each one in that you're going to use when you get back home. Or ordering water with every meal when you are really craving a sweet tea or soda...just because "that $2.50 really does add up!!!" Scrounging up dozens of coupons and only buying what's on sale at the grocery store. I buy what I need when I need it. I don't let coupons do the shopping for me. If it's on sale...GREAT...if it's not, oh well, I'm still getting it. And store brand shit tastes worse at least over 50% of the time. Same goes for coupons at restaurants. If you can't afford to eat out without a coupon...stay at home and cook...HEY...IT'S SAVING YOU MONEY TO DO THAT ANYWAYS!! Ya'll probably tip on the total after you use that $25+ coupon as well...cheap fucks.

I'm all for saving money...but I'm not going to let it affect my lifestyle. I go all out on a few things. Mainly my jobs and my physical fitness. The rest of my life I want to relax and enjoy. Stealing internet?? If it means I can get a faster signal so I can download music and watch my Netflix without any interruptions...then I'm paying the $50. I love movies and football, so sign me up for the HBOs and Sunday Ticket package. And I rarely go to restaurant that has a kids menu...but if you do...just order an appetizer cheap-o. Kid's sirloin?? If you're craving a steak, you should be able to eat a whole one. Having the temp at 60 degrees during the winter while wearing sweaters inside?? I relax in a t-shirt and shorts...It doesn't need to be 75 in my house...but I'll be damned if I'm wearing layers inside my own house. I'll wrap up in a blanket at night, but not with a fucking hoodie on underneath.

“We have to go back! I forgot to unplug the cable box!” “Is the TV on?” “No, but the cable box is still using power!” “Is the cable box actually on?” ”No, buts it still plugged in. You know the clock is still on when you turn it off…that costs money!” “You’ve got to be kidding me.” “No, turn around. We need to go back so I can take care of this. I also forgot to turn off the AC.”

^^^I noticed you touched on my point about keeping the t'stat low in the winter time. I grew up in the north, so I'm perfectly comfortable wearing sweaters. If you're always happy in shorts I can understand, but I could care less. And if it prevents me from having a $250 gas bill, all the better.

Also, who doesn't enjoy having a blanket on while watching some TV

^I can respect that. I'll turn it down at night when I'm watching TV or in bed and wrapped in a blanket/sheets.

But I also hate wearing socks. Temps in the low 60s inside when it's below 50 outside make me wear socks. I keep my thermostat around 68-69 during the winter.

Who the fuck is talking about pleasures??

We're talking about every day amenities here. Food, shelter, electricity, etc. I don't spend crazy money on toys and trips. But I also don't spend extra energy on saving small amounts of money that "add up" when you look at it over the course of a year.

I actually buy that high quality TP where its so thick that you only need like 3 or 4 sheets. Fuck that TP that you can see-through. I bet all the cheap-os in this thread steal TP from work or the gym.

^^The secret is to get the really thick sheets. When I pull out a fresh roll I can't even put it on the roller, its so thick it won't even fit, it scrunches up against the wall

And I really did pay my water bill twice, though it was a mistake

it's not stealing, it's being thrifty. will it still be "stealing" when I retire when I'm 45 because I "stole" toilet paper instead of buying it myself?

Use synthetic oil in your car. You'll only have to get an oil change 1-3 times a year (depending on how much you drive).
