haha, actually we did reach an unemployment rate around 4%. (which many economists consider to be full employment)

Did you actually say "if that were true"? Use your common sense. What keeps you from hiring 4 people to help you take care of your daily needs? Who wouldnt like a house cleaner, cook, driver...just go create positions for them. We NEED to create jobs... oh... but they will probably want to be paid. shit.

It's not just the taxes I pay. Employers hire employees when the payout exceeds the risk and cost of hiring them.

^way to go professor... you still need MONEY to pay them correct?(which is what you are saying... that they produce more than they consume) We are talking private industry and without bailouts here. In the private industry you need MONEY to pay employees. Maybe you yourself have had a job in the past and were paid to do that job. I would even imagine that PAY was probably your primary driver for the job. (please dont take this too seriously, Im just having some fun)

Taxes go on the expense side of the ledger along with other costs. When costs increase you raise prices. IF the market doesnt tolerate your increase, then you cut expenses. So lets see what expenses I can cut? Rent?..gotta have the building.. Power? Need that one.. Taxes?...well I gotta pay those or I go to jail....Staff? my biggest expense....hate to do it but...

Ok, well people get money lots of other ways besides tax cuts. Reducing taxes won't directly decrease the cost or risk of hiring them, nor will it directly increase the payout of hiring them. There is a more complicated indirect relationship there.

IT IS AN EXPENSE. If you lower that expense then the business or person has more MONEY. Thus they are MORE resources available to them. I think you realize what I am saying but just want to keep arguing something I am not even saying.

A tax cut does not mean it will create a job, but it sure as hell increases the likely hood it will.

There doesn't seem to be a lack of money out there. Wall street is doing relatively well, despite employment figures. This is an oversimplification (like most of this thread), but companies can already afford to hire; they just choose not to. It would be prudent for the government to focus on other ways to stimulate job creation.

^you are actually correct. Many companies are stockpiling cash. There is a lot of uncertainty out there, a lot of it coming from govt. (healthcare, regulations, taxes) Which is the smart business decision.

This is just like my friends who are concerned about being laid off. They arent doing much but building up cash reserves. It is a smart move.

Depends on the kind of tax. Taxes on net profits, AFTER reinvestment, encourage hiring to avoid the income going to waste entirely while still growing the company.

I'd counter that if the Republicans were serious about creating jobs and working with the president to move the economy forward in a meaningful way (what happened to "Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!" from November???) then they would do more than make futile attempts to outlaw abortion and regurgitating Heritage Foundation talking points.

No, it's because corporatist lobbyists and religious lobbyists have successfully manipulated conservative distrust for authority into buying into the unfounded idea that scientists are part of a big conspiracy (that is manifested in various, sometimes contradictory, ways).

The same way that (I suspect-- no actual proof for this) liberals might be more likely to buy into new age diets or exercise or eating habits, on the basis that it's new and must be Better, conservatives can't help but be drawn to the idea that the way we've been doing things can't be THAT wrong wrt climate.

There are more dems in the country than republicans, but the dems don't say the right things in the right ways.

Obama talked about inequality/manufacturing/rust belt jobs for several months a few years ago, and the GOP shut him down as a socialist/communist/class warfare, and he didn't know what to do to punch through this.

I would suspect if he just did like Sanders and kept talking about it, talking about solutions and their impact, rather than just asking congress to "do something" things would have turned out differently.

This horse has been beat to death the past few weeks, but there's still too many "neoliberals" in the machine that are afraid of confrontation.

The Senate did have a good hearing on the Dawn of AI today, although watching it, it just seemed like the please of AI experts fell mostly on deaf ears (Ted Cruz chairs this committee). I suspect the only thing they took away was that China/Canada are the 2 world leaders right now that we have to worry about, and the tech could be weaponized.

I know it sounds awful to say but they were largely ignored this election by the left while Trump conned them. Obviously they want to be sold a bill of goods that can never be used.

Well, there's a pretty clear divide between the party's power structure and leadership and the voters. There's a clear shift between the boomer generation who is still in control and the younger, more progressive social democrat style wing of the party which is not yet represented in any meaningful way.

This disunity is evident when you look at low turnout for Hillary, the excitement over Bernie (set aside his age and look at his movement), etc.

I think there are certainly different ideological wings within the party, but in a conversation about age, you don't get to say "set aside his age." The whole point is that old politicians are clearly not a dealbreaker for either party.

Fair point, but the ideological divide is also largely along age lines as well. There aren't a lot of pro business, hawkish foreign policy "Clinton Democrats" under about age 50. That wing of the party is literally dying out.

I question this thinking.

After Trump was elected, literally overnight, the republicans perception of the economy jumped up to match democrats in the belief things were going relatively well.

The number of republicans supporting ACA literally doubled-- a solid majority of Americans want to keep ACA and just fix the problems, rather than repeal and replace (and a huge majority support each individual element of ACA when asked about it separately).

If you take this into consideration and consider also how people could overlook the very obvious lies Trump was telling, I don't know what explains both things. The simple answer is that people just didn't want to be associated with Obama or admit he wasn't evil, but this seems too simple to me. Are voters really so spiteful?

This is big news. My biggest concern with Ellison is that DNC chair is a full time job with the need to rebuild the party at the local and state levels, especially in preparation for 2018. The party should back him full stop now.
