There is the old Bernie Sanders, who mounted a quixotic campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination as a democratic socialist who refused corporate cash and excoriated corporate Democrats. And there is the new Bernie Sanders, who dutifully plays by the party’s rules, courts billionaires, refused to speak out in support of the lawsuit brought against the Democratic National Committee (DNC) for rigging the primaries against him and endorses Democratic candidates who espouse the economic and political positions he once denounced." |

Man, I was a huge Chris Hedges fan in 2008ish. This article is a perfect example of why I don't seek his writing out nearly as often as I used to (this one isn't even as well supported with facts as I remember his older work being), however, this article is a perfect starting point for progressives to ask themselves where the balancing point is between leftist purity and the pragmatic advancement of progressive legislation.6/21/2018 7:21:31 AM |

There is no balance here because "pragmatic advancement" always means pro-capital legislation that is never intended to reach the goals progressives want.6/21/2018 11:34:54 AM |

Well, take Hedges’ example above. He’s suggesting Bernie is a traitor to progressives because he didn’t try to burn the Dem party to the ground when he had a chance.
Meanwhile, Bernie (and others, but Bernie was a significant factor) has a significant percentage of the Dem party signing onto Medicare for All proposals, including lots of alleged presidential candidates. Time will tell if they actually pass anything, but the parties movement on healthcare has been pretty drastic.
Which is more important: meeting the purity standards of leftist pundits/journalists or passing legislation that improves people’s lives? 6/21/2018 7:00:05 PM |

I’m excited about some of the new blood myself, but are you really ready to start disregarding Bernie? In some ways, he has been the tip of the spear for progressive change in the Dems (especially if you just look at the last ~5 years.) IMO, he can still be a significant factor for progressive change going forward. 6/28/2018 6:54:34 PM |

What he said was fine (mostly, the sanders thing was still pretty wrong) but he missed some absolute softball questions. He's experienced enough to know that the soundbite matters, not the longer explanation 6/28/2018 7:35:24 PM |

^Doesn't sound like anyone is accusing Bernie of sexual harassment or of covering it up. Of all the candidates we've seen the past decade, Bernie is the one most likely to agree to have this meeting and do something about it. 12/31/2018 3:54:48 PM |
