I like it, so long as we didn't give up too much. Giving up someone like Connor would make sense, since he's basically good depth at this point.
Don't forget Chud's big on Tight Ends. He was TE coach at Miami when Bubba Franks, Kellen Winslow, and Shockey played there 7/28/2011 6:32:50 PM |

I just want to take a moment and give some praise to management. We've literally been the most active team in the NFL to this point.
They are definitely making up for tanking last season. 7/28/2011 7:59:26 PM |

No player and only a 3rd rounder. That sounds like a win for us.
Get Newton signed tomorrow and the checklist will be nearly complete.

3rd rounder is fair
not sure i'll go all the way to "win"
we've gotten some damn nice players with 3rd rounders and not had to immediately give them a big money extension
then again we also took armanti in the 3rd round 7/28/2011 9:10:31 PM |

This team treats draft picks like they're an STD. I like the move though...we haven't had a good receiving tight end since Wesley Fucking Walls.
It wouldn't surprise me if Shockey doesn't make the final roster. Olsen is obviously a better pass catcher at this point, and neither one can block worth a lick. You have to figure Hartsock and Olsen will be on the field when we line up with two TE's. I doubt Shockey wants to be the third stringer. 7/28/2011 9:20:12 PM |

I think it's fair to say he's in the top 10 all around tight ends in the NFL currently. I'd take Gates, Clark, Witten, and Davis in front of him, but he's in that pack right behind those guys. 7/28/2011 9:21:19 PM |

didn't we already sign him, or assume his contract, since we got him before the lockout?7/28/2011 9:24:28 PM |

Not sure that matters. Guys with contracts get cut all the time.
And Ribs, you have a higher opinion of him that I do. Besides those you mentioned, I'd take Finley, Daniels, Cooley, Miller and Winslow ahead of him as well. But he's a hell of an upgrade from the status quo, no doubt about that. 7/28/2011 9:34:21 PM |

^(said something about hurney going crazy w/ spending, then he deleted it)
i dont know if it's the case but the panthers probably had the most free cap space of anyone due to jerry preparing for the lockout
im not one to defend hurney, but id say they have had to work the hardest of any team to get in position to be able to match the 99% cap floor

@SF Back before Lovie hired Martz and they actually wanted to go to the tight end, he was a big play waiting to happen every time he checked in. Especially in the red zone.
Of those guys you mentioned, two tied him with 5 TD receptions (Winslow/Miller) and only Cooley had significantly more catches than Olsen in an offense that doesn't utilize him at all. Also keep in mind that a lot of those guys mentioned are pro bowlers.
You have to think that production jumps in a TE friendly setup giving us a pro bowl caliber tight end for a 3rd rounder. Win. 7/28/2011 10:33:03 PM |
brownie27 All American 3030 Posts user info edit post |
They had $35 million they had to spend to get to the cap floor... and another $20 or so to reach the cap. I don't think they are anywhere near trouble.
The Big Cat may come out looking like a genius after this is all said and done. Question mark still on Cam... but with the offense around him... I don't know that he fails. The new coaching staff on top of that, and this team might be at the top of the contender list within the next few years. If not immediately. 7/28/2011 10:33:09 PM |

i like it...possibly tandem TE's in Shockey/Olsen to cut the field in half, Smith and Gettis/Lafell to stretch the field, with the ability to playaction pass with Cam and our stellar running backs. with coach Chud being an offensive "guru" (as some have called him), there's a chance our offense could be very unpredictable and productive.
and fuck all of you haters in here who said Richardson was a cheapskate terrible owner who isn't committed to putting a good team on the field. 7/28/2011 10:35:41 PM |

After rounding up a slew of free agents, the Panthers turned their attention to linebacker Jon Beason. Per a league source, Beason agreed to terms on a five-year, $50 million extension. The deal includes $25 million guaranteed.
Beason joins defensive end Charles Johnson, running back DeAngelo Williams, linebackers Thomas Davis and James Anderson, kicker Olindo Mare, and probably five or six guys we’re forgetting as the recipients of new money in Carolina.
Next up? Center Ryan Kalil, the team’s franchise player.
They may not be able to compete in the ultra-competitive NFC South, but it’ll be fun to watch what they do." |

whether it pans out or not (because i'm willing to give them another year in mediocrity with questionable QB play) this is singlehandedly my favorite offseason for the cats. i have begged and pleaded for elite receiving TEs ever since Wesley Walls departed. I like the strategy of waiting until they show themselves worthy on another team (shockey and olsen).
the best thing we could do to win this season is be unpredictable and versatile. we have an offense now that is capable of so much more than the conservative playcalling we've seen in the past. there were so many games i went to in person where it just looked like run 2 times, throw a prayer, repeat ad naseum. cam being able to rollout with 2 TEs could be very dangerous. 7/28/2011 11:38:45 PM |

they need to hurry and get Newton signed, he needs to be at camp tomorrow
i heard the new thing (maybe ITT somewhere, cant remember, not looking for it) that the new thing for agents now with the rookie wage scale is that they are trying to get their whole contract as guaranteed money
