Here is the ring I got for Skwinkle. I got a platinum setting with baguettes. She really wanted something classic with an interesting profile. The center stone is her late grandmother's, so I got lucky there.

Thanks! I purchased the ring from http://www.moissaniteco.com/. There's a bit of a backstory - I'm not a huge fan of the diamond industry, both for the ethical and the financial considerations. She feels similarly, but still loves the look/style of a diamond ring. We went ahead and visited Diamonds Direct Crabtree out of curiosity to see what was available, but the options didn't really mesh with what we were looking for unfortunately.

We managed to meet in the middle with a mineral called Moissanite (a.k.a. silicon carbide) that appealed to my geeky side - it was originally discovered at a meteorite impact site, and is otherwise very rare geologically. It's extremely similar to diamond, having a hardness of 9.5 on the Mohs scale, and has the diamond characteristics she loves. In addition, the gems are grown instead of mined, which I found more appealing, and since it doesn't require the same overhead costs as diamond mining, it's much more competitive price-wise. Regardless of what it's made of, however, her and I both like how it looks, so I suppose that's what really counts

What are y'alls thoughts on changing rings that have been in the family for years (like hundreds)? On the one hand its neat to have something that special and unchanged. On the other hand having the stone captures the sentiment/family value and redesigning the setting adds individuality and allows the couple to make it their own style ... which balances the old family stuff with the start of a "new" family. But then do you need to take into account family members feelings? If you inherit a ring and want to change it surely someone will be pissed, no?

Just had a friend get her now fiancees grandmothers engagement ring and she changed the setting. She didn't ask the fam. Just seems like a potentially awkward situation. Although I'd be inheriting mine its still like a family piece.

I have a "recycled" engagement ring.

I took an heirloom piece which was a large oval dinner ring with 3 main diamonds surrounded by 10 or so smaller diamonds to a jeweler. I originally planned to dismantle the entire thing using the main diamonds for my engagement ring and the smaller diamonds in my wedding band. Because it was an heirloom piece, the jeweler suggested that I go ahead and use the 3 main diamonds in my engagement ring, but preserve the rest of the setting by replacing the 3 main diamonds with some other stone(s) and then remove the band turning it into a necklace. (Since my hands are too small to carry off such an ostentatious ring.)

I told my grandmother our plans for the ring and she really appreciated that the original setting would be preserved and turned into another piece of jewelry instead of being discarded.

My mom sold my grandmother's diamond from her ring and gave me some cash to help with my purchase. I asked but would have been fine if she didn't do anything with it. It's not your ring to begin with. Even if it is a "given" that you're going to get it, you should still ask, "is it okay if I....."

My right hand ring is made of: My grandmother's dia. Solitaire (her 25th Anniv gift) & her diamond stud earrings, set into one ring.

Point is:
When my family 'gave' me this oh-so-amazingly-special gift, it never crossed their minds that I would keep them in the original form. Being that I'm in the jewelry industry, they presumed I'd make it into something I'd really enjoy.... something that represents me, but reminds me of her...

I have never understood why anyone thinks that a ring must be kept in its original form, in order to represent that person's memory.

My ring suits me very well, and I enjoy telling its story when people ask.

Do people REALLY get their panties in a wad over that? ....I guess drama can be created nearly anywhere....

P.S. - The original settings were melted into a pendant for my aunt...

I'm so glad to have read this. Right after I saw this pic of your ring I was in love, and then reading it was moissanite made me giddy! I have always been insanely curious about/attracted to moissanite, but don't hear much about it IRL or ITT. not to mention, that up until recently, haven't had much reason to think about it in terms of a RING-ring. I love all aspects of it, especially those you mentioned.

^^ exactly! That's what I'd do, too - melt the original setting into a pendant probably. It has sapphires & diamonds and I wouldn't want Sapphires in my engagement ring. If it gets kept as is I suppose it'll sit in a safety deposit box. I think the person who left it to me would want it to be something that's special to me & worm, though. I just didn't know if people got angry over stuff like that. I'd like to keep the antique vibe of the ring - just in a less ornate way. I'm pretty low key so a huge blinged out ornate ring isn't really my style. Once I have possession of said ring I will prob have to get in touch with you re: design options

It sounds like the ring is pretty unique, and if it really has been in your family for hundreds of years as you said, there's no way I would melt it down.

I inherited my grandmother's ring, but it was a simple solitaire from I think the '70s (it was her 25ish year anniversary upgrade). I didn't have any issues with melting down the band on that, nor did my family, but for something that's unique or really that old, imo it's a bit of a shame to lose that history. On the other hand, if it is yours, you can do what you want.

That's also true. So it was my grandmothers but before that it was my grandfathers grandmothers. Not sure if it was anywhere before that. My grandmother was born in 1918 so...yeah, it's pretty old. But it's almost like a man's ring. The setting is so big. It'll be a tough decision for sure. I guess I could also use all the parts of the ring and make a smaller version of it w/ a less giant setting. But I agree on that point as well - the history is neat.

The lady and I were at a grand-opening for a local software company and we ran into a ton of people I haven't seen in a while. Probably a minute into conversations with every couple, the other woman would grab my fiancee's hand and say, "I love your ring." Happened about 5 or 6 times.
