Its really good. Sat at the end of the long table in the middle. Had a quart of the black tea (they will bring you simple syrup on the side if you want it sweet) Both got the 1/4 white meat, and split the wedge salad and some mac and cheese. Also split the chocolate chess pie with caramelized banana. Well worth $34. Will be back, again and again! 8/18/2011 2:31:44 PM |

I prevent from brewing my own in the morning to go fill up with it at the local bakery. 8/18/2011 2:45:36 PM |

Its actually quite a bit different. More of a casarole with pimento cheese flavorings. It comes out in a square, right out of a dish, much like K&W or K&S, but way, way better. If I remember poole's correctly, it comes out in a wide ramekin, and is very melty/soupy, with big noodles. This is smaller noodles, more compact. Much more traditional southern mac & cheese. (Not by any means saying its not going to sit in your belly all night loooooong...cause it will)8/18/2011 2:48:03 PM |

so are you implying that they don't have sweet tea or refills?8/18/2011 2:51:16 PM |

The menu says that it's a mac and cheese custard. 8/18/2011 2:51:27 PM |
WolfMiami All American 8766 Posts user info edit post |
^thats probably pretty accurate.
^^I asked that question on the last page, I didn't see "sweet tea" on the menu. I think I even asked for the sweet tea, or I asked if it came sweet, and she said it came with simple syrup if you wanted it. As far as refills go, the quart was huge, and $2 total. Would have filled the glass 5 times. They bring you a glass of ice and you have your own refill pitcher at the table.

Yeah, I'd think the menu would be fairly accurate as it lists what the menu items are (often with a brief description). 8/18/2011 3:12:52 PM |

I meant accurate as to what I would call it, fuckface.
Its definitely not 100% a custard, hell you could use souffle, casserole, bake, and about 1000 other things 8/18/2011 3:22:05 PM |

There are no free refills on tea, but the $2 quart filled our two glasses three times each. Also, it's 1/2/4 bucks for a pint/quart/half gallon, so there's no need to order something big up front just to save cash. Get a pint, and get another if you run out.
I got a quarter white and my girlfriend got a quarter dark. As expected, the dark was better (Poole's only ever has dark when frying), but it was all excellent. 8/18/2011 7:01:53 PM |

so the consensus is that this place has amazing fried chicken
but at $15/person for a piece of fried chicken and sides, are you all going to be going back often or only special occasions?
cuz last time i checked, real estate is tanking, stock market is tanking, unemployment is all time high, and everyone here acting like $15 is nothing......maybe I need to work where you work 8/19/2011 1:14:09 AM |

i think it will do well. esp at lunch. people downtown don't mind dropping $10 - $15 on lunch (business people). i don't really think the prices are more outrageous than any other downtown establishment. maybe i'm wrong. but there seem to be a lot of places in the $10 - $15 range. 8/19/2011 7:22:04 AM |

There's a certain section of people downtown that can afford that but when I was working downtown some of my coworkers didn't even want to pay for anything more expensive than Jimmy John. Even business folks are struggling to pay their home loans. I think she's targeting the dinner crowd and am kind of surprised she's opened for lunch. 8/19/2011 8:05:38 AM |

your experience (being poor and working with poor people) is not typical of folks with real jobs that work downtown.
these are people with jobs. real jobs. despite what you've heard on the news, times are not tough for these people. their salaries have stayed the same or increased and they didn't get suckered into adjustable rate mortgages.
if you disagree with the prices established by the proprietor of a business, vote with your wallet. 8/19/2011 8:29:21 AM |

The white meat was dry and pretty cakey (over breaded and not cooked). The dark meat was epically delicious.
She runs the downtown food scene now, I'm kind of curious what she was alluding to in the indyweek article about what other chefs have said about her. To me the food is over priced in all of her restaurants. I have never eaten anything at Pooles or now Beasley's that I feel I couldn't do myself. For the same price at say, Magnolia Grill in Durham, I generally have no fucking idea how they came up with the dishes they make. The dinner price is generally comparable at both. I think a lot of her success comes from what she does in the community. She's good for Raleigh for sure. 8/19/2011 8:59:05 AM |

I work in downtown and most of my co-workers hit places like El Rodeo, Spize, Jimmy Johns, Shish Kabob, Mecca, Raleigh Times, Busy Bee, etc. There are plenty of lunch places under $10 in downtown raleigh.
If it's a business appointment, then yes, maybe more than $10 for lunch. But I don't see myself dropping $15 for fried chicken. For that price, I'd rather hit Sitti.
I've worked with Ashley before, and she comes across as being pretty overrated. I was excited about Beasley's opening, but was not happy to find out she went for the overrated, overpriced route.
I hope her Chucks and the upcoming Bastillas is more reasonably priced. We need good and reasonably priced food fare in downtown Raleigh.
And my co-workers are 6 figure salary employees, but I think folks have become smarter about how they spend/save money.
