the other thing to remember about the new price is that it includes the new kinect. obviously not everyone wants it, but it's microsoft's option to push the tech (it wasn't going far on its own).

so PS4 just announced they won't have any used game restrictions

should swing the pendulum a bunch in their favor for people on the fence

It is also only $399. I'm sold on the PS4 I was way more impressed with it than Xbox One.

I pre-ordered today.... Since I am always plugged into the internet, I dont care about having to connect to the internet, I dont share games, or buy used games.

I didn't see any PS4 exclusive games that interested me.

XBone it is.

I'm not completely ruling out the Xbox One but I will not be buying one at launch. PS4 on the other hand I will more than likely buy at launch or shortly after. I just have not seen anything about the One that really stands out for me. There are a lot of features that it has that I will never use.

i'm on the other side of that fence. i really don't have any reason to get a ps4 over an xbone. the price difference isn't that much and i pretty much never buy used games. what does ps4 really offer that's better than the xbone? (serious question)

neither console is worthwhile for games, not that I expected they would be, but I was kind of hoping xbone might have had more in the way of non-game capabilities. nooope.

Fry for me it is the price point and used games. True it is only $100 cheaper but on a LEO salary if I can save $100 I am all for it. The same can be said for used games. There are a lot that come out that I really want to play but cant merit paying $60 a game. Plus I trade games on a used game website to help cut the costs of buying new games. Xbox One is going to put a serious chokehold on that.

I am sure when all the warriors mount on the newest installment of CoD I will cave and buy a One. Because in all honesty it is a lot more fun to play with you guys than what it is to play on Playstation Network. At the moment I just can't bring my self to drop $500 on a box loaded with stuff that I probably will not use. Plus I do not like how they seem to be shoving the Kinect down out throats. The current gen Kinect absolutely sucks so my hopes for the new gen Kinect are not very high.

totally understand, and what you're sayin makes sense. i think we're examples of two different use cases.

i keep one or two games in rotation that completely dominate my gaming time. (long run, i end up "getting my money's worth... or at least that's how i justify it to myself).

i would prefer a choice with the kinect stuff. i've been interested in trying it out though so it's not a total negative for me. IMO neither the xbone nor the ps4 really brought a full deck but at the end everybody still just wants to get paid. it makes me wonder how different the conversation would be if they both had a $400 price point (say neither had a required eye/kinect).

Steam has conditioned me to love the convenience and security (I lose and tear up discs all the time) of all digital content more than the price breaks I can get on used games.

Only problem for me is the inability to rent or borrow. But MS has said they are "looking into it" which probably means they are waiting to see what kind of outrage there is about it, and I'm almost positive they will base that more on pre-orders than on reddit anti MS circle jerks.

^thats actually pretty funny.

MS is gonna get killed for the used game policy, but i am still under the opinion that 2-3 years from now, most of the new game purchases will be digital and not disc based. basically taking the used game stores out of business anyway. its really strange to me that people still want to go to a store and buy a new disc, even though we buy apps on phones instantaneously all the time.

Why is it strange? I go buy a game, beat it and then sell it to amazon for like 40% of the cost. It's great

^^A few things

1) For some I'm sure having a disk makes people feel comfortable knowing that they can still play/install a game regardless of the state of their internet connection. A backup, something to fall back on.
2) As far as I know they want to keep the same pricing model that currently exists for discs in their new digital download, no used game setup. I think a lot of people would have less of a problem if they actually reduced the price to reflect the loss in value that came about as a result of the transition to a pure rental model.
3) People probably don't think twice about what would happen to their digital download phone app because it was $1. The company decides to shut off access to app version 1.0 because they just released app version 2.0. I guess I'm out $1. I'm sure it would be a different story if the app was $60.

Also, I thought MS backpedaled on the whole used game thing. They saw the backlash and came up with that story where there were no fees, you could even share a game with one other person for free, etc.

Quote :
"As we move into this new generation of games and entertainment, from time to time, Microsoft may change its policies, terms, products and services to reflect modifications and improvements to our services, feedback from customers and our business partners or changes in our business priorities and business models or for other reasons. We may also cease to offer certain services or products for similar reasons."

No fees for used game transfers, free games for friends... at least until people buy into the new console, then all bets are off.

your point #1 is just a psychological thing, because they would still need the internet to verify their game

for me, I don't buy used games and am more interested in the other features than getting next generation graphics. I'm happy with digital downloads or installed games with DRM because I'm fine with that requirement so that I don't have to keep up with and change disks when I want to change games.

And I love the idea of being able to play one game while I'm waiting for a match to start on CoD. Getting an alert when the game is ready and being able to seamlessly swap to another game (or live TV), is a huge plus for me.

This is true and the aspect of still needing the internet to verify a game pisses people off just as much.

I have really enjoyed my Kinect and get regular use out of it. The voice and gesture interaction for Netflix and other apps has made it worth the price of admission. And now my daughter is getting big enough to play Kinect games. I'll agree it doesn't really do much for core gaming but it's absolutely perfect for dance/fitness style games and adding to the interface.

Looking forward to being able to turn the xbox on by voice.

The ps3 just pissed me off on such a regular basis that I swore off the next sony console no matter what.

Also ^ Same here, kid is getting big enough to play kinect and loves it. I could easily do without it, though.

If they both had that price point I would more than likely go with Xbox One despite the used game issue. I say that for the simple fact that almost all of the One games impressed me a lot more than PS4. I am a Halo nerd so that in itself is enough to almost sway me solely to Xbox One. Ryse looks like an awesome game and so does Dead Rising 3.

After going back and re-watching the Xbox One and PS4 releases I have a feeling I am going to end up with both consoles. But after putting some thought into each system I think I just may sit them both out for 6 months-1 year. That way I can hear all of the pros and cons and try to get a little play time on both before pulling the trigger and making an expensive decision.

the thing I like about including Kinect and making it mandatory is that its much more likely that developers will utilize it in good ways since everyone will have it.

^agreed. The mandatory Kinnect is a boom bust x-factor

It will either spawn great games we've never even thought of, or it will be largely unused like my current Kinnect.

I was all set to preorder one of these yesterday but then decided that I would wait to see how good the TV integration actually is. If it's good I'll try to get an Xbox around launch, if it's not I'll wait until sping or so and pick which console I want.

I HATE the PS controller layout. I'd rather use an N64 controller.

on the issue of mandatory kinect...it mandatory to have, but you arent going HAVE to use it correct?

Depends on what you mean by "use it" It has to be plugged in at all times or the console won't work. And the console has to check in to the internet every 24 hours. I also heard a rumor that if you try covering up the camera Microsoft will send a Seal Team to your house to rectify the situation immediately.

they don't need any deals for it to work like they demonstrated, what the discussions with TWC are about is streaming live TV directly on the Xbox without the need for a cable box. that's a different issue. out of the box it will play your live tv (via an HDMI input) and will control your satellite/cable/cablecard with HDMI-CEC or an IR blaster, that's what they showed.

This could go a couple different ways as I see it.

1. Because there is less to none of a "used" market, prices stay high longer as there is no secondary market for games.

2. Because gamer's can't recoup as much on their games, they hold off waiting for better prices on new games forcing quicker price drops on all but the top AAA titles.

Looking at how PC games are now, prices drop faster and are much better in general so things could go this way. That said, I would say the PC market is generally an older more savy group. Kids and Parents buying console games may not have the same attitudes.

^^ yeah. steam has had non tradable/non-refundable games for its entire existence and no one cares cause you buy the things you really want on release and everything you kind of want on steam sale. if they went to that model and added lots more access for small publishers (not just for games but for apps as well) then I think most people wouldn't care.

obv. for me pc is the way to go, but I still think (as I've already mentioned a bunch) consoles should be trying to get more into the general appliance market, instead of just games.

If you can throw something that moms are gonna want to play/use on there then suddenly its way easier to convince mom to buy an xbone for her son when it comes with stuff she wants as well. I think mobile apps have really eliminated any hesitation about buying digital only software, and its only natural to extend that to the living room.

was all on board for the xbox one, then realized that Bethesda is releasing Elder Scrolls Online for PS4 first by a month I think. So it looks like Bethesda has already chosen its preferred system. And if the next fallout and Elder Scrolls game are as awful on the Xbox One as they were a glitchy shit storm on the ps3, I'll be going with the PS4.

Also, none of the xbone exclusives interest me. I am pretty tired of FPS games. Infamous looks way better than any exclusive xbone will offer. Plus, if Naughty Dog keeps making games like Drake and Last of Us for PS only, its not even close. Shame because I love the hell out of my 360

And the best platform for Bethesda games is ALWAYS PC

^^^ you played Last of Us yet drankin? I can't decide to buy it or not. Good to know someone else had to suffer through Bethesda bugs on PS3.

I really have no loyalty. I'm just disgusted with the way games are going. Brown/gray/shooter/serious tone don't make it too gay like with cell shading or colors queers. Thinking about just playing Guild Wars 2 with my work buddies. Between that and Dark Souls 2 on the PC I'll be fine.
