Model 3 Performance + '04-'09 Ram Power Wagon with 6MT

(My Insight is finally nearing replacement.

It has multiple dents from people hitting it--the last 2 within months of having it repaired and fully painted after someone hit me. I just took the insurance money and left it alone the last 2 times. It has an intermittent failure of the ABS/TC/stability control, but that's not that big of a deal with 98 hp. The stereo head unit finally died recently, and I have a cheap knock-off head unit (although with Apple CarPlay, haha) I need to install. Then finally the other day, I hit this gigantic crater of a pothole in New Orleans, and it damaged the front bumper and knocked out one of the inner fender liners. Worse, it bent a structural member that it all attaches to by about 4". I drove it home, but I'm about ready to finally turn this thing over to someone else. It has been the most boring car I've ever owned by far, but one hell of a good one. 341k miles now. Basically no issues other than the above, minus replacing an AC compressor once when the compressor clutch failed.)

I had someone else do that one.

Actually all that had failed was the compressor clutch, but a reman compressor was cheap. Like $100-something bucks, and mine had prob over a quarter million miles at that time and I figured it was good insurance against a compressor failure that would send shards of metal through the whole system and require everything be replaced.

^^^ Man WTF, Tesla.com has the best prices, and by far the easiest way to filter options. Lots of the other used Teslas seem to be being sold by people detached from reality, thinking they can flip their Teslas for pandemic prices when you couldn't buy a new one.

...on top of that, you get a 10k mile warranty on top of any remaining factory warranty.

The problem is, you can't even see pictures of it until you buy it! You pay a non-refundable deposit, then a delivery fee, and then the thing could be beat all to hell and back when it comes in. There's just no way to know.

and ANOTHER price drop on their new cars.

I guess it'll take a little time for the used market to adjust again. Right now you have 3 year old used cars listed for a couple thousand less than a brand new one.

Well yeah, that's what I plan on doing. I'm just saying that the prices on the used ones are gonna have have to fall, because they're too close to the new prices since TSLA just reduced their prices again. It makes sense to wait and let the dust settle

I am curious to see the Cybertruck and the refreshed Model 3, but the reality is I'm not gonna pay $12k for the FSD option on a new one, so they're kind of a moot point (and I wouldn't buy a used one without FSD, because it barely costs any more on a used one).

Also I can't buy a new one until next year, because I wouldn't be able to get the $7500 tax credit on a new car until 2024 when I file head-of-household on taxes (claim my daughter every other year).

Also a 6MT Power Wagon makes a M3P with FSD look really easy to find.

Made an offer on a 3rd M3P.

First one was very, very low miles and perfect shape. M3P, FSD, performance upgrade package. Got him down to $38k, I was at $37k. Very close, but I think he wasn't going any further, and that was already more than I really planned to spend, and then TSLA cut the prices of new cars again while we were negotiating, which was sort of the nail in the coffin on that car making sense to buy, at least to me.

then I found another one (M3P, FSD, performance upgrade, white interior--which is not really a plus to me, but whatever), but 2018 and 70k miles--a little more than I was really looking for--and minor curb rash on 2 wheels, a couple of little rock chips in the paint and a couple more rock chips in the glass. So, good condition, but not totally pristine.

While I was looking at that one, I made another offer on one I saw on eBay--absolutely perfect condition, blue color (my favorite on those cars), just detailed and ceramic coated. M3P, FSD, but no performance upgrade package (wheels, suspension, brakes, cosmetic stuff)--a minus, but not a dealbreaker--I don't really plan on tracking this thing, and I think it would need more than the PUP to handle extending track sessions anyway. We were pretty far off on price; he never even counter-offered.

Just made an offer on that 2nd car. I'm only $2k below his asking price, although it's already priced low and had just been reduced a week ago. On the other hand, I'll have to pay to get it shipped, and for repairs on curb rash and paint chips. Still will be a good deal if we can come to terms close to my offer. The ad says price negotiable. Hopefully he still intends that after dropping thousands off the price a week ago. Even as a longtime king of biding my time, negotiating, and buying vehicles at stupidly low prices, I just can't imagine getting him to sell it any lower than my offer that's not that much lower than his asking price. I'm more scared of alienating the seller by pushing him any harder.

Have you driven any of these cars? I won't deny that a M3P is the best bang for buck performance EV, but I found my SIL MYP fairly boring after 5-6 pulls. No doubt it's light years ahead of an Insight but in general there's very little I find appealing about them. And the build quality is horrible (by modern standards).

^^ I've driven a base 3.

...but it really doesn't matter. My commute sucks--I spend 2 hours per day in the car and it's all on flat, straight roads, in traffic. I don't need steering feedback, or neutral handling balance, or whatever. I need (1) cost effective to operate over lots of miles, and (2) blindingly, overwhelmingly fast--I'm done driving slow cars down here where I live.

It's a really different species of redneck down here. Lots of them are absolutely malignant pieces of shit, and they don't suddenly get well-adjusted when they get behind the wheel. I have lost count of how many run-ins I've had where they've tried to run me off the road (not gonna work; either you'll back down or we'll crash--there is a 100% chance that my balls are bigger), threw shit at my car, actually hit me once (thinking I'd pussy out and move out of the way on the highway), backed up their giant truck overhead the hood of my car in traffic trying to intimidate me or something, etc. Many, many incidents. Several cases where it was prolonged and severe enough that I dialed 911. I think part of it is just that lots of them are pieces of shit in general, coupled with being anti-environment/EV/hybrid or whatever has become a social identity for them.

Well, I'm not paying lots of money for fuel with the tons of miles I have to drive, and I can't move closer to work. I can't keep weapons in the car M-F because I work on federal property...so I'm gonna make damn sure I'm the fastest thing on the road and can ditch any of these fuckheads instantly, at will.

Of course the novelty will wear off. I mean, fast and grippy is nice, but I'll almost never drive it anywhere that the performance will really matter. I would 100% just buy a regular RWD one, or really, something like a Chevy Bolt just as a super cost-effective transportation appliance. If I lived some places, I'd want a fun DD, but it's pointless where I drive. This, unlike probably almost every other performance Tesla, isn't really being bought for the fun factor so much as for the "fuck everyone else all the time" level of performance factor.

it's essentially always a middle-aged dude with a goatee in a full-size truck, so you probably wouldn't need anything THAT fast to get gone decisively, but overwhelming force doesn't cost much more. I'm not gonna spend double for a Plaid, though.

Struck a deal today on a 2020 M3P. FSD, 48k miles, grey. Performance upgrade.

Autotrader won't accept the payment until I furnish insurance information, though...so I technically can't send the money and seal the deal until I can talk to my insurance agent tomorrow.

^^ bigger brakes, stiffer suspension, track mode software, Bigger wheels and a few cosmetic things.
Pretty much all Performance models have it after the first couple of years.

^ I’ve had good shit here, and for the driving I do, it kinda sucks. At a minimum it’s completely pointless. I almost never drove my 7 or FR-S except to an autocross or track day.i literally drove them prob 10 days per year. (I drove the Z06 more, but I would far rather drive even a base Model 3 on my normal driving).I love those cars, but not for how I use them…and for almost exclusively track use, I’d rather have a true racecar.

Yes. But I work from home so there isn't much "daily" going on. But now that I have the GRC the C63 will be driven somewhat less. I actually went around 2 months without filling up the C63 and forgot what kind of mpg it got around town. Filled up, then did the math...12.5 mpg, what the hell was I doing?! Oh right, nothing. Just zipping around town with transmission in manual mode

Right, I spend prob 1:50 in my car every day commuting, it’s basically all in traffic, and all if it is flat, straight roads. There is no joy to be had in driving it no matter what you’re in. Plus another half hour most days round trip for the gym. Prob close to 25k miles per year, a negligible amount of which is in any environment in which one might have any hope of enjoying driving.

I love a roaring V8 or a shrieking, high-strung I4 or I6, but where I live and drive—and with how much I have to drive,I don’t mind near-silent golf-cart sounds, and something that chugs gas and rapidly eats large, expensive tires is a non-starter. I’m not put off by EVs the way you are. I still love cars of all kinds, but I’ve driven sports cars here and it’s pointless at the very best.

I kinda expect I’ll wait until my daughter is out of the house, so I have more time to do track days, and then buy a Radical or something along those lines. Maybe a Spec Racer Ford, or a Stohr, or something.

Historically I’ve avoided them for privacy reasons. I also figure that they’re just as likely to be subpoenaed against me as to be useful for me.

At this point, I can’t really continue to avoid cars with event data recorders, and practically everywhere is under surveillance of various kinds. I don’t think there is much privacy remaining in America unless you living in the middle of Wyoming or the Nevada desert or something.
