Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Spare Time!

If you're like most people you've got a computer that spends a lot of time idling on a blank screen or running a cool screensaver. Did you know it's possible to directly support Cancer, Alzheimer's, and Cystic Fibrosis research using your computer's idle time? The Stanford University Folding@home project provides a small piece of software which uses your computer?s spare processing power to run simulations and help researchers understand these diseases.

The NCSU Wolfpack Folding@home team has been ranked as high as 81st in the world but we were recently knocked out of the Top 100. While our team has had
much success in the past, if we don't get some new computers and PS3s running soon we'll keep moving farther down the ladder

Download The Client Here:
http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html We recommend using the "No-nonsense text-only" client for most computers. For multi-core systems, the SMP client will get you and the team far more points than the traditional client (but it doesn't start as a service, so you'll have to restart the client manually or automatically when your computer restarts). If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how.
If you have an ATI X1800 or X1900 series graphics card you can even run Folding@home on your graphics card (with great results).

Installation Instructions
Enter a Username
Enter Team [59] (thats the important part)
Launch automatically at machine startup, installing this as a service [yes]
Ask before fetching/sending [no]
Use internet explorer settings [no]
Use Proxy [no] (unless you want to use a proxy)
Allow receipt of work assignments and return of work results greater than 5MB [yes]
Change Advanced Options: [no]

The folding client will run in the background as a service at low priority and won't interfere with your work/fun or slow down your computer at all. And you can run as many PC and PS3 clients you want under your username to contribute to your points and to the team points. The SMP client expires today. They've released a new one, all you have to do is replace the changed files (fah.exe may be the only one) instead of uninstall/reinstall.

They've also released the v6 beta clients. They're moving towards a system where its the same download for SMP and the normal uni-processor client...you would just run it in SMP mode if you had multiple cores. The Linux and Mac v6 beta clients have this functionality, they're still working on the Windows v6 client.

yeah the SMP client is still in a v5.91 beta status...its just for some stupid reason they have expiration dates on the clients (eg today, Oct 1st) and they stop workng after that. I think this will be the last time we'll have to deal with this though.

they've release a windows v6 beta client that currently only works in single-core mode, but soon it will be able to run in SMP mode too meaning there won't be multiple windows console clients anymore (or SMP clients with expiration dates)

Has anyone noticed a bunch of these 206 WUs showing up on your single core clients?

I've got a couple of Centrino-Duo machines that I'm running two console clients on each (because the SMP WUs don't finish in the 4 days window allowed). Lately I've been getting two of these 206pt WUs on each machine, and for each laptop I'm only averaging ~160PPD...Seems like an awful low point output when I'm running two clients on a somewhat new computer...

Anyone noticing anything like this?

now that i updated my SMP program, it wont work, i keeps on givin me the error starting Folding@Home core. over and over and then goes to sleep

Anybody have this problem also?

i fiddled round on google, and it was error 63(99) , said it was a permission issue, so i think i got it workin now, not for sure, had to set it to run as administrator(i hope i dont have to do that everytime) and had to redo the install.dat file

is your windows account an administrator account? if not why not? what OS are you using? If you're still having problems let us know.

i got it workin now, cept it hung up on me after 2%, thats the earliest its ever hung on me before and i had to restart it, normally they dont hang till like 60 or 70% if it is gonna hang up on me. But it seems to be runnin fine now, yes i am the admin account, im runnin XP Pro, and if i run into any more probs ill letchall know

For linux people on beta 6 xmp client (and soon to be windows smp clients), be sure to rtfm.... I upgraded to beta 6 linux smp on monday and owned my PPD because I forgot the '-smp' flag. So those machines were all single cored for 2 days. Should be all better now.

yeah they're moving over to the same client for smp and single-core uses...just by use of the -smp flag to designate multiple cores.

the linux and mac beta 6 clients have this functionality, the windows beta 6 client doesn't have it yet (but theyre working on it)

gawd we're hurting here lately i wonder how much of this slump is due to the stupid expiring SMP client. It makes no sense, all they change in the program is the expiration date and make it good for another 3-4 months...such a pain in the ass. good thing theyre coming out with the v6 soon and we can be done with all this expiring mess. [/rant]

Lets add some more clients and get back up there!!!

i installed the smp client on my windows box to take advantage of the core 2 duo (i realize quad-core is more efficient, but what're you gonna do?)...anyway, when i run install.bat from the installation directory, it pops up a command prompt and i get this:

MPICH2 Process Manager, Argonne National Lab installed.
account (domain\user) [User\User-desktop]:

what am i supposed to put in here? i've tried my username (which is actually "User") and then it asks for a password...i have no password for my windows box, but it won't let me continue without one, so i make one up...it asks me to confirm and then says:

Password encrypted into the Registry.
Credentials for User rejected connecting to User-desktop
Aborting: unable to connect to User-desktop

what am i missing?

Oh don't worry about that. Core 2 Duo processors (especially the ones with 4MB cache) are excellent folding procs and will produce all kinds of points.


In the install.bat, you have to type in the actual username and password you're using. If you dont have a password for your "User" account, then just leave that spot blank. that should work...if not let us know.

My lab servers are idle over night. That means I have about 8 dual-core Xeons that could be folding. However, I'll never get my adviser to allow such a thing if it impacts server performance during the day. Anyone have or know of any guides that explain how to configure the Linux 64bit SMP client to only run during specific hours? I've never run F@H before so I don't know how picky it is about how it's run.
