I always go with Samsung or Asus screens. My Samsung screen is going on 3+ years and still kicking, I have a Dell 19" that's going on 8+ years.6/3/2011 10:46:32 AM |

Yeah, kinda foolish to add an anti virus program for a machine when there's no accompanying OS... Hell, I'd buy it and put linux on it. Ubuntu looks really good since the last time I worked on one years ago. (well it was easy back then too, but the new gui looks awesome) 6/6/2011 3:06:06 PM |

coolermaster makes some great cases. i am using the HAF922 in my new rig and the shear quietness and feasibility of cable management and setup is great. came from another coolermaster case (RC-690) from my old build and that was a really good case too. 6/9/2011 9:45:53 AM |

I'm getting so sick of hard drives dying. Noticed my computer was acting strange the other night, tried to boot up last night and it would just hang after logging in. Tried rebooting a couple more times and it blue screens at the Windows loading screen. I'm thinking corrupt hard drive.
This was a Seagate btw, only 7 months old. I had no choice with that purchase, but never again will I buy a Seagate drive.
That being said, makes me just want to build a whole new computer. 6/10/2011 2:05:03 PM |
JBaz All American 16764 Posts user info edit post |
yes... cause a whole new computer than replacing the hard drive is the smart thing to do. And srly, seagate has been shitty for the last few years. Specially the 7200.11 crap that was suppose to be the best thing to happen in mechanical hard drives till they started dying like death stars.
Go WD or Hatachi, but honestly, just grab a few and run a raid 1 or 5. If your case doesn't allow for hdd cooling, then that could be ur issue. heat kills mechanical hard drives really fast. Had a wd 120gb die on me after a month a long time ago and thought it was a bad drive till I realized that the portion of the case didn't allow for any air movement (did the smoke test with glass door). 6/10/2011 2:20:05 PM |

The computer is 3 years old, I was saying I'd want to replace it all just because I am a nerd and like to replace it all every few years.
I never buy Seagate, but my drive crashed and I needed to get it back up for school work ASAP, which meant I had to buy a drive locally, and the Seagate was the only decent priced drive. I used to run Raid 1, but I didn't want to buy an additional shitty Seagate drive.
I have plenty of fans on the hard drives, its an Antec 900 case, so each hard drive has an 80mm fan blowing in on it. 6/10/2011 5:42:40 PM |

Should have done some research. Seagate's have had a terrible rep lately, especially the 1TB and 2TB models.
I've got 3 different Samsung models and 2 WD's. The WD can act funky sometimes, but the Samsungs have always been solid and steady.6/11/2011 7:43:27 PM |

^+1 on samsungs, they've been very impressive over the years. Hatachi has been winning me over lately with my 2TB drives.
I hope 5870's go down to 100 or sub 100 in the next 6 months so I can crossfire mine in time for bf3. 6/11/2011 10:18:56 PM |

Like I said, I never buy Seagates. I actually always buy Samsungs. But my Samsung drive died and I needed to be up right away because I needed to write a paper that weekend. I went to Fry's (west coast) and the only drive that wasn't outrageously priced was this Seagate drive so I bought it and hoped for the best.
After messing around with the computer more over the weekend, I'm not entirely sure it's the hard drive now. It usually won't boot, just BSOD, but every once in a while I can get into Windows, but nothing will launch, it just hangs... I walked away for a while and when I came back it was in a BSOD reboot loop.
Anyways, seriously considering a new build now. 6/13/2011 1:23:47 PM |

So I upgraded to 12 gigs from 6. 6 was pushing limit. I got another 3x2 set of DDR3 for like $90. I just noticed that I could get a 3x4 kit for only $119. Is it worth returning the 3x2 set for the 3x4 set? So using only 3 sticks to achieve 12 instead of 6?
I've heard the less sticks of ram you have the better. 6/15/2011 9:34:26 AM |
DoubleDown All American 9382 Posts user info edit post |
has 12gb of ram just blown you away in drastic performance increases? 6/15/2011 9:52:59 AM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah quite a bit. I use vmware a lot for work and with 6 gigs it was limiting what else I could do in the OS. If I have vmware, photoshop, and a few other things open my memory utilization jumps to 97% or higher and I notice a slow down. After upgrading there's an immediate difference.
I think i'm going to stick to the 2x6 sticks. I don't overclock too much and why mess with something that works. It's 1600 ram and it's only running at 1033 now (for 3.2ghz stock cpu). Switching to 3x4 shouldn't make a difference. 6/15/2011 10:05:03 AM |

if you have 1600 RAM why not run it at 1600? 6/15/2011 10:21:46 AM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
My overclocking knowledge stopped when I got rid of my Conroe. Haven't had much time to mess around with things lately. It's running at 1033 automatically. I guess I could run it at 1600. I hear that people run into issues running all 6 slots at 1600 though. Another reason why I was considering moving to 3x4. Right now the FSB:RAM ratio is 1:4 (133/535). 6/15/2011 10:26:28 AM |
jbtilley All American 12797 Posts user info edit post |
I hear you on the extra memory. At work I'm typically running 3 VMs at a time. Granted one of those is throttled down to 512. 6/15/2011 11:18:13 AM |
JBaz All American 16764 Posts user info edit post |
Running all slots will reduce the memory bus to 1333 no matter if you paid for 1600 sticks. Also because the way the system is designed, the memory controller is less efficient because of addressing of the 2nd set of ram modules it needs to do. But we are talking small performance hits that you and I would never really see.
Even the speeds between 1333 and 1600 yields very little gains, however you still want to make sure you are getting a fast CAS timing that is compatible for your motherboard. I run G.Skill CAS 7 1600 @ 1.5v ram sticks in my system that has been rock solid for a year now. If you plan to overclock, make sure the modules can handle extra voltage, 1.5-1.65v at the rated timing. You can spring the cash for a low CAS lag and a low voltage sticks, but honestly just get a regular 1.5v 1600 CAS 6 or 7 sticks. Again, you will never know the difference. 6/15/2011 11:19:44 AM |

Yeah for piece of mind (because I want to start overclocking more) I ordered these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231358
The difference between the ones I got and these is like $30 so I figured I'd do it. Feel better running 3x4. 6/15/2011 12:02:32 PM |
Prospero All American 11662 Posts user info edit post |
Good choice, I love G.Skill Ripjaws, typically the best timings, lowest stock voltage and very affordable memory. I have the Ripjaws X 8GB kit and it's been a great OC kit.
JBaz hit the nail on the head, low CAS timings (typically means) -> lower stock voltage (which typically leads to) -> higher OC

^I did too. That's the one I just ordered a second set of. After messing with trying to get 6 sticks running well for 12 gigs I said fuck it and spent the extra $35 on a 3x4 set for 12. You're not really supposed to run 6 channels of 1600 DDR3 on X58 anyway (Intel says only one 1600 dim per channel). Not to mention overclocking is slightly more complex getting all the timings right. 6/15/2011 3:09:18 PM |

The 8800GT on my wife's computer bit the dust (she also burnt out my 9800pro back in the day). Is there a local store in the triangle area that has decent prices on graphics cards?
I scoped out some cards at intrex online, but their prices are ridiculous. I'd rather not wait a week for a card from newegg, but if intrex's prices are any indication of what local stores have to offer I'll easily wait that week.

So I'm in the market for a new rig, but I'm not sure I'd have the time/inclination to build one myself this time around.
So I've been looking at some of the pre-built rigs that Neweggs offers, and narrowed it down to a few. There's a couple awesome builds that are dirt cheap with that are Open Box items. If the only problem is a nicked or scratched case then I dont give a good god damn. SO I guess my question is if anyone has ever had any experience with Newegg's Open Box items? 7/1/2011 11:01:59 AM |

Yeah I was expecting one to run in that range. It's a little steep for what I wanted to do, but I kinda wanted a boost from the 8800 that was in there.
Maybe go ATI, since they seem to be a real good option for the $100 range. 7/1/2011 11:57:04 AM |

I've already got an ATI 4770 video card from my old computer which I will just move over, and I've got two 500gb WD Black drives as well. A friend is hooking me up with Windows 7 x64. I will need a new PSU and I have no idea what to get. I've used Newegg's PSU calculator and it gives me 427W, which just seems low to me. 8/8/2011 5:49:10 PM |
