There's a theory out there that the lightsaber is an old sith relic and that the things on the side are exhaust ports. I guess it would also explain why the character has to give a full body heave to activate it... the on button is super rusty.

Plenty of weapons with purely ornamental features from our own history. I remember Dooku's lightsabre looking kinda fruity too. There's also the 99.9% chance that it was put in there only to troll nerds.

Or if nothing in particular, look at the lightsabers 'unstable' characteristics (arcs). As if it's a poor design or its infused with the sith's rage

I thought the glow of the light saber looked different bc of improved cgi. Instead of just looking like a glowing bar.

And I've seen the light saber gimmick before. Darth maul was hyped like crazy and then had 15 minutes of screen time and that's it. And a lame fight.

Up front, I'm a star wars nerd.

When I saw the trailer, I thought "wtf? A black storm trooper?"

Immediately I realized "well Luke and Han were in storm trooper uniforms"

Then, I pondered "the empire recruited and pressed people into service as storm troopers as the empire grew, so they were not all clones."

Then I read the cnn article, and thought "those race baiting bastards don't understand the story line and are trying to create an issue out of nothing, BASTARDS!"

Despite Episode I being lame and Darth Maul not being in too much of it, I really thought that final fight scene was really good. Not too long and drawn out like the one between Anakin and Obi-Wan in Ep 3 and lots of good choreography.

I am a huge Star Wars nerd, but I definitely didn't bat an eye at a black person in Stormtrooper armor, whether they were trying to hide or genuinely are a Stormtrooper.

I think a lot of the confusion comes from the Clone Wars not being explained well, or rather the chronology that occurred in Star Wars. Clone Troopers were the beginning of the "Imperial Army" as we know it. So that is what we see in Episodes I-III and the Clone Wars cartoon shows. Fast forward to episode IV-VI and at that point the Empire has expanded to a point that they are using recruits and have moved away from the cloned troopers, hence the name change from Clone Troopers to Imperial Stormtroopers. So by Episode VII-IX, whatever holdout planets are still under Imperial control, they probably have all sorts as Troopers to fill out their ranks. But maybe folks are equating Clone Troopers from I-III as Stormtroopers from IV-VI (who AFAIK we never see without a helmet on) and thinking that is still the status quo.

The one thing that always got me about Stormtroopers was not about skin color, but more about species. All Storm Troopers as far as I have ever seen are human males. I believe some EU books got more into females and aliens as Troopers after the collapse of the Galactic Empire, but I always found it interesting that in a society with a population of billions and countless different races and species, all Stormtroopers were human males. All other races and sexes served the Empire as bounty hunters or in other capacities. Granted there is an obvious tie-in to Hilter, Nazi's, the SS and racial purity, but I always thought about it more as species purity in Star Wars where humans in general were the best.

Star Wars has been the highest grossing film worldwide in each of the 3 years it's been back. That's likely to end this year since Infinity War will be much bigger than Solo, but 3 straight years at the top of the Box Office isn't a sign of a franchise that is in trouble.

Also it's been a huge hit with both critics and general audiences (cinemascore is very high).

Over saturating the market. Part of the fun of Star Wars is that there has (up until recently) been a long time between movies, which adds to the hype. Getting a new one as often as we do with the Fast and the Furious (2 Star 2 Wars) pretty much ensures they are all going to turn to shit.

Until the Marvel dollars dry up, oversaturation won't factor in. If anything, the MCU should have been oversaturated years ago.

Instead, look at Black Panther - it will end up breaking records. Already has.

IMHO, the MCU is getting tired. All of the movies now are basically the same, lots of CGI action and witty banter. They're all just wrapped in different skins.
