i dont know if it's the exhaust or the phone making the video, but sometimes it's obnoxiously loud and other times it's very quiet. does it really have that dynamic of a range? 8/25/2016 2:34:24 PM |

There is almost that dynamic of range. Cruising it is almost silent. When you get on it, it is loud.
Here are a few more clips.

Got some dyno pulls tonight. Very happy with the gains, but not as much with the cvt and the actual power put down. The baseline run (red) is just an intake and muffler delete on an otherwise stock car. The modded run (green) has 20x9 wheels, Akebono big brakes, intake, stillen under drive pulley, and the dual exhaust. Base 179hp, 158tq Mod 218hp, 217tq 39 whp, 59 tq gained over the base.
The exhaust sounds awesome under load.
Very disappointed in the overall number for an engine rated at 290. That is a lot of drivetrain loss. The car has a lot of miles, so a fresh engine and transmission may put down better numbers. The gains are obvious though.
There has been time to clean up the baseline run, but the mod graph is as it was plotted without being cleaned up. It kept wanting to drop down a gear and not hold till 6.2k for these runs.

I didn't see it listed anywhere. What is the typical pipe diameter you are using? 8/30/2016 10:37:48 PM |

2.25 till the flex pipe, 2.5 from the flex to the muffler. 8/30/2016 10:41:55 PM |

How many HP did you gain from the Akebonos? ]8/30/2016 10:42:54 PM |

The wheels and brakes are going to lower whp because of their weight. The intake loses some low end but makes more over 4K rpm.

that's a really low number. my old, ragged out '95 M3 with 180k made 227whp on 240hp stock engine on a mustang dyno. 8/31/2016 1:40:05 AM |

The people who swap the 7h gen motor into cars with real transmissions say that it should be 220hp base. I'm betting most of the loss is just from the cvt being near impossible to accurately dyno. 8/31/2016 5:58:07 AM |

Is it "hard to dyno" or does the CVT really steal that much HP (40hp+ in this case) 8/31/2016 10:04:50 AM |

If people are swapping the 7th gen motors to a car with a "real" transmission, what's the stop you from doing a transmission swap? Custom mounts? OBDII Woes? No room?
Anecdote: I've read that CVTs contribute to about 20-30% power losses, depending on design. Lots of other forums with CVT based power-train are reporting this range of driveline loss.
To really find out, I guess you'd have to do an engine dyno for a crank/wheel comparison...

^^People swap the 7th gen into cars that have autos and manuals so the parts are already in the car. The swap of a manual trans into a 7th requires the computer to be programmed, pedals to be fit, the body cut for the shift linkage, and different axles to be made. There is a company working on this swap, but they are estimating $10k. It just isn't worth it. Swapping the 7th motor into a 5th gen body is less than $6k.
There have been other people who have dyno'ed their 7th and recorded 220-230 whp before mods. I'm thinking it was this dyno and the cvt being difficult.
There is another Nissan tuning shop between Raleigh and Greensboro that I will be checking out. His 7th gen motor swap in a 5th gen body is doing 314whp with bolt-ons and his tune. Using a 220 hp base, then I'm in the 260+ whp range and 280 tq.
^ Yes, very happy with the gains, and I think a lot of it is the exhaust. The intake company claims 4hp on top, and the underdrive pulley claims 10, then the exhaust would be contributing 25hp to the equation.
