hard to know how stupid of a move this is without any details
sure as hell looks like the players hated him, though 7/17/2017 1:25:51 PM |

Early speculation the players didn't really like/trust Gettleman and some of the moves he's made, and also rumors that Jerry was still annoyed by the Norman move. 7/17/2017 1:40:32 PM |

Big Cat must have adopted Shula after the falling out with his sons. That's the only explanation I have for him still being here and Gettleman being fired. 7/17/2017 1:43:00 PM |

Yeah, no one gives a shit if the players like/get along with the GM. Jerry wasn't happy with how Gettleman treated old vets. He'd rather have a team full of old guys on bad contracts then be good. 7/17/2017 1:58:38 PM |

huge fucking mistake.
We could be in big trouble for the next decade if we don't hire well again. Fuck man. It was so nice knowing we had a guy willing to make the tough belicheck like decisions. Not get married to has been players in a young man's sport.
Going to fuck up the rest of Cam's career if we aren't careful.

That is my feeling as well. This was about players around the league seeing how DG treats players and thinking not a chance I want to play there.
I still don't like the timing, but this could be a galvanizing thing for this season if so many players truly disliked him. Beyond this season it leaves us in a bit of limbo7/17/2017 3:01:44 PM |

Ummm, did y'all miss where we signed a bunch of free agents this offseason? Including one who had previously been in Carolina when DG was here? This wasn't about players not wanting to sign here because we finally had a competent GM, come on. 7/17/2017 3:08:23 PM |

and I think he did a fine job as GM, but he also had plenty of issues

He took over a cap strapped team coming off I don't remember how many losing seasons and managed to scrap together a roster than made it to playoffs 3 years in a row plus a Super Bowl berth. Y'all are seriously underselling the man, he did his job exactly the way a GM should, like an emotionless spreadsheet. 7/17/2017 3:30:08 PM |
thegoodlife3 All American 39298 Posts user info edit post |
he didn't build that Super Bowl roster, though
he had a hand in it. too much credit is given to him for building that team. again, having Peak Cam helped cover up a bunch of holes that would've been glaring with almost any other QB in the league behind center
I'm happy that he got us out of Cap Hell, and he drafted relatively well, but he's not irreplaceable

But seriously, chill out. He got us out of cap hell and there is no reason to think the next GM will definitely put us back in it. He made some great moves in his 4 seasons here, but he mishandled some things as well (Norman, Smitty, etc) so thanks for getting us out salary cap hell and best of luck. I'm not gonna shit bricks until I see who we hire or promote in the interim.

This seems pretty level headed and reasonable.
And while I know money and cap space was always an issue, I think you can fairly put his lack of emphasis on the OL right up there as a misstep of his. Again, other factors were at play - he obviously knows of the position's importance. But failing to adequately protect the franchise QB proved to be an annual issue for the team. We tried to get by with a patchwork OL. It halfway worked for a couple years but it was a perpetual issue and never a strength for the team. Especially for a GM that always spoke of "hog mollies".7/17/2017 8:01:41 PM |
thegoodlife3 All American 39298 Posts user info edit post |
exactly
it's also entirely possible to sign veterans to cap-friendly deals without hardballing them
I'm sure there's a way to give Thomas Davis, someone who has put his body on the line more than any Panther ever, a deal that makes both sides happy. there's no need for absoluteism when it comes to a player like him, which seems like what Gettleman was doing

I get that the NFL is a young man's game, but if the rumblings are true he was treating Thomas Davis terribly. Big Cat has always liked TD and he is WPMOY winner. He has been a Panther his whole career and been a role model in the community. While Smitty was done wrong Smitty had some warts (Ken Lucas, Anthony Bright incidents). Thomas has none of those other than missing some years with his knees.
DG did his job getting us to be competitive and out of Salary Cap jail. The TD and Olsen issues just made Richardson mad and ultimately its his team. I just hope he doesn't bring Hurney back even in the interim role. 7/18/2017 11:34:20 AM |

Alright let's just wait for the Thomas davis and Greg Olsen nightmare extensions and subsequent injuries and then freak out. Fair?
Don't forget we have Star and Trai to figure out this year too. We had a guy who really understands positional value and roster construction. It's a testament to how good his philosophy was because we won despite rellatively unimpressive draft picks and underwhelming free agent signings that proved to be solid value. 7/19/2017 4:22:39 PM |
