Ahaha, the Big East will break up now that ECU has billboards up around Raleigh advertising "BIG EAST FOOTBALL" as if that's an accomplishment.

ACC talking shit about SEC? Not smart.

ACC talking shit about a conference that's so desperate that they want San Diego State and just got played by Boise State, all while losing every single modestly good team it ever had in any sport in a decade? Justified.

The ACC is in a bad position post Big East demise. I wouldn't be talking crap right now because if more teams get poached, we're the primary target of the big conferences. Maryland was a gateway poach and the results of the ACC and their lawsuits is likely to determine whether we're the next Big East, getting poached year after year or not.

I don't know about that. Taking a few plane trips a year doesn't cost too much when you're making 30,000,000+ a year.

Per espn rumor going around that UVA and GT will be offered spot in Big 10

They speculate that UNC has been offered as well and that if UNC were to leave, that Duke could join the newly formed private school league that has marquette, seton hall, villanova, etc and then worry about findin a home for football.

Can we just go back to 2000 and nix this whole realignment thing.

A world with UNC, Duke and State all in different basketball conferences is retarded.

I love football but fuck football.

^^ That would suck ass. NC State would be royally fucked. The Big Ten can suck a dick. Go raid the Big 12, stay the hell away from the ACC. Fuck Maryland while we are at it too and their lack of ability to run an athletic budget (even though Yow has a lot to do with their issues).

It just doesnt make sense to me that schools are willing to throw away decades of history and tradition for a boost in money. Who the fuck is gonna show up to a Maryland Indiana football game? A Maryland Minnesota basketball game? NO ONE thats who.

A few things I think about this process:

1) If the Big10 comes and poaches UNC from the ACC, then its obviously very likely the league falls apart because everyone is going to poach from us at that point. That's not necessarily a bad thing, because if the SEC wants the NC TV markets, we'd be the next logical choice.

2) However, if for some reason the SEC poaches UNC from the ACC instead of us, then we'd be largely screwed because I don't see Big10 wanting NC State, and our best hope would be that the Big12 decides they want a bunch of each coast teams so WVU isn't all alone on the east coast. Worst case scenario there, we end up still in the ACC with a bunch of mediocre teams, basically the Big East 3.0.

3) None of this is happening before the Maryland lawsuit is settled. The ACC is supposedly holding on to Maryland's payouts right now until the legal matter is finalized. GT or UVA isn't going to risk having to pay $52M to get out of the league and have their funds on hold essentially by the league. The lower the exit fee gets negotiated down to, the more likely we are to see teams jump ship. So for those of us that want the ACC to stay together, we have to hope that exit fee remains super high.

---

All of that aside I seriously hope that none of that happens and the ACC remains as it is. No matter how "cool" it would be to be in the SEC (in the "best" case scenario of the league falling apart), losing the tradition and rivalries the ACC has built over the years would be tremendously sad.

well i hope you still care when it's nc state vs. central florida in a weeknight ACC matchup.

how long until we have to play football games on tuesday to get on ESPN?

Athletic budgets are going to SUCK once all these Nebraska-UVA volleyball games on Wednesday start happening and fuel prices go up more.

Even factoring in money, I'll never understand who would ever calculate that "yeah, I bet we could make a ton more off of UNC-Nebraska games than UNC-anyone from NC."

Yea, I'm with you Hoops. It doesn't make a ton of sense. I know all the money is coming from TV deals, but is there really a big TV demand for UVA vs. Minnesota in football?

They make the money off of charging everyone in NC and MN $1/monthly to have access to the B1G Network that will carry the game. Even if it isnt a "big game" you're still going to subscribe so you have access to your team's games in both football and basketball.

^ You're right, it's all Tier 3 rights and collecting as many households as they can for their conference networks. But the destruction of conferences, rivalries, and tradition in the effort to get those households sucks for it to be just about that. It's all a money grab... for the conferences, for the schools, for everyone. The people that get punished as the fans because we lose tradition and we pay money each month for these conference networks.

I think most of us do in fact realize the money side is about TV.

What part of that statement is still not true? I said nothing about it bringing in money. Its more about the fact that everyone sold out for TV contracts and in the end there will be no fans at half the games.

Not super big news, but Notre Dame would consider joining the "new" Catholic 7/Big East conference, even if it was just for 1 year.

honestly, it makes more sense for them to have rivalries with Georgetown and Villanova in basketball than to play UNC and Duke.

They're staying essentially independent for bowl bids in fb anyway.

Notre Dame will stick with the ACC tie in unless there's another big shakeup. With the expanding conferences, it's been harder for ND to fill its football schedule come Oct/Nov. The ACC deal makes that easier. Joining the Catholic 7 would leave them with no FBS tie in. It's just not going to happen permanently. And if you bring Olympic sports into the mix, which ND does care about, the ACC is an even better fit.

^^but what was great about their TV deal that last 20 years was that it guaranteed all their games were televised, and they were a marketable football team that millions of people wanted to watch...but while they were a good team this past year, they've been fairly shitty the previous 10 years or so, but more importantly, every team's games are on TV now...i think NBC lowballs them in 2015 when the contract is up and if ND doesn't accept, NBC goes after something more profitable, like some other conferences games...and that will highly influence ND's conference decisions

http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/03/07/report-catholic-7-to-announce-departure-from-big-east-thursday/

Basically Georgetown, Villanova, Marquette, St. John’s, Providence, DePaul and Seton Hall are "leaving" the Big East, but they are keeping the "Big East" name and keeping the basketball tournament location of the Madison Square Garden.

Will add Xavier, Butler, and Creighton to their new league and then add St. Louis and Dayton the next season.

Now I post this here just make a comment about how it must feel to be someone like UConn, Cincinnati, or USF in this situation. Those 7 schools just basically voted to kick them out by "leaving" the conference, but forming a new conference with the exact same name.

Who is going to pick those schools up? ACC? Big 12? <Insert non BCS conference here>?

So, will the leftover schools try to move forward an settle into a low-major status? Do they just take their money and dissolve the league?

I like how the disambiguation page refers to the current Big East conference as the former Big East conference.

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/9042949/notre-dame-big-east-agree-irish-exit-2-years-early-join-acc-source-says

Please let this be the end of realignment

15 Team ACC (14 football, 14 baseball, 15 else)
14 Team SEC
14 Team B1G
12 Team Pac-12
10 Team Big XII
who the f cares Team America 12/Metro Conference/Who the F Cares Conference
10 Team Big East (no 1A football)

if UCONN or Cincinatti move on to greener pastures, so be it. Just no more poaching and idiotic expansion plz
