Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Spare Time!

What Is It?
Essentially the http://folding.stanford.edu/ uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor.

The North Carolina State University (http://ncsufolding.com) Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the top 100 in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the company of anyone who would like to help.

All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-PS3) on it with great results.

How Can I Help?

Go to http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download,download and install the software. Our Team Number is 59.

Click here - http://www.ncsufolding.com/?page_id=4 for more detailed installation instructions.

Windows Computers:
We recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team far more points than the standard console client (but sometimes it has problems starting as a service, so you might have to restart the client manually or automatically via startup folder when your computer restarts). In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions.

Mac and Linux Computers:
There are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the text-only clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.

PS3:
PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!

The more computers and PS3s you run the clients on, the more points your username and the NCSU team earns! Install as many clients as you can and watch your username/team progress at the stats page - http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=59

here's my FAHmon for people's reference on PPD.
home - E8400 stock 3.0Ghz, OC to 3.6Ghz = ~2100PPD
work - E6600 stock 2.4Ghz
laptop - T2310 stock 1.46Ghz

oh and BTW, swapping out my old E6600 for the new E8400 solved my FILE_IO_ERROR, apparently it WAS a hardware issue, my desktop has been cranking with no problems now for 2 days or so

^ you folding all three 24X7? If so you should be well over 5K PPD in no time

assuming ~1600PPD on the e6600 and ~750PPD on the T2310...but now that I think about u might not be running the e6600 because of the errors

notice the 3961 PPD in the lower right hand corner of the image
and you can also see by the image the E6600 as i described as my work computer is at 1350 PPD
my home desktop USED to have the E6600 which is now the E8400 you can see is putting out the 1905 PPD

and yes i'm folding all (3) 24/7

do you have photobucket blocked or something?

yeah I was at work when I read your post, so the photobucket image didn't appear (didn't even see a placeholder).

But yeah, I guess I took your 2100 estimate and overestimated the other two 4K is still pretty badass tho.

Most likly the server is down that the WU needs to be sent to. You can check the status here.
http://fah-web.stanford.edu/serverstat.html
There are quite a few down. We need to put this on the team site.

The problem with gorilla folding is that your machines can be rebooted for their intended purposes at any moment without warning. Stupid legitimate computer lab users.

You are folding a Quad core, 24X7, using the SMP client, and you're only getting 800PPD??? I get nearly that much on an ancient mobile pentium dual core proc. what quad core chip do you have? I have a Q6600 and I get 2100 right out of the box.

Theres nothing wrong with that first log file you posted...in fact I don't see anything wrong with anything you posted. is it not going up in percentages? is your cpu getting used 100%?

I don't know if you can monitor PS3 clients with FAHMON. google for "fahmon ps3" or something like that too find out.

oh, and are you still folding for the ECU team or did you change all your clients to team 59 yet?

They're all changed to 59.

just wondering if it was jacked up or not b/c I didn't really see any progress happening on the work unit when I tried to use fahmon 2.3.1. the cpu is at 100% due to the smp clients.

I guess it just takes a lil while for fahmon 2.3.1 to start reading what the smp client is doing.

still trying to figure out how to get fahmon 2.3.1 to monitor my other machines so I can see what they are all doing.

Share out your FAH directory on your other machine, let's say it's called "Tracer", then when you right click and "Add a new client", Name should be "Tracer" and Location should be "//tracer/fah/" ... or use the IP such as "//192.168.1.11/fah/" for your local subnet or "//5.16.101.74/fah/" if using Hamachi, etc etc. I don't guess I need to detail this too much. Feel free to ask if you still can't get it to work.

Oh, AFAIK FahMon uses forward slashes "/" for the address-space, however try back slashes "\" if it doesn't work for you.

It's the Core 2 Quad 2.6Ghz .It's the SMP client (command like, task mgr confirms all four cores are cranking away).

^^If you use your computer a lot then it will lower the PPD because you are stealing processing power away from FAH. You're fine. Just noticed, Quad-core ... ok you should check your idle w/o FAH running to be sure ... also make sure your config options are set to receive big units too.

^Good to hear, and yes, very big difference. Between putting multiple cores onto one chip and the technological increases in processing power per core, the Dual/Quad+ core processors are great at what they do when compared to P4s!

haven't found anything that'll let me monitor the ps3 yet. but at least I'm turning out some good production with the 3 laptops and the ps3.

+ Error starting Folding@Home core.

Quote :
"With the SMP for Windows client, a CoreStatus = 63 can either be a permissions problem or a MPI registration problem, or both. To fix the problem, set the properties of the fah.exe file to "Run as Administrator" and then run the "install.bat" file again to register MPI and the SMPD service.

Failure to install .NET 2.0 (Win 2K, XP) prior to installing the SMP client can also result in this error. "

CoreStatus = 7B (123)
Client-core communications error: ERROR 0x7b
Deleting current work unit & continuing...

Quote :
"This is an unknown error from the fahlog of SMP clients. Because 0x7b is not defined in the F@h client or SMP fahcore, it is believed to be a Windows or SMPD/MPICH error code. Known causes are unstable systems from too much overclocking, changing network settings while the client is running, or stopping restarting the client. The error is also caused by Windows updates that need to restart your machine. See the List of Known Issues.

Here's one more possiblity:
(0X7B Problem with Windows SMP Client solved by MichaelO)
The 0X7B Error that many folks have gotten when using the Windows SMP client is not an error from the Folding Client, but rather from Windows itself according to the Folding Forums, Wiki, etc. I had increasingly started having this problem on one of my machines. This morning I was notified that my Acronis backups had failed in the Verify Step. Upon researching this error in the Acronis forums, it was suggested that the Acronis error was caused by a memory fault. I found this a little hard to swallow at first but after having 0X7B problems this morning after rebooting to try and solve my backup issue I decided to start changing the memory, and sure enough, once I replace my 2 x 1024 memory Pair the problems in both Acronis and the Folding Client disappeared.

Based on this, I would suggest that if you start getting errors on the folding client, you should first try testing your installed memory thoroughly. Windows XP is fairly forgiving about memory faults but Vista is more stringent, and the SMP Client, especially on a dual core is also not very forgiving once the memory starts to go bad. "

Damnit. My department sysadmin altered the options of the lab machines I've been using for gorilla folding to require a password to boot from a CD. I was going to to process like 60,000 points worth of WUs over the weekend. Stupid notions of proper allocations of resources and not abusing university equipment for unintended purposes...

You shouldn't have done it during the week and only for the weekend when nobody would notice.

^ There's not many labs on campus that will run SMP units that don't get a lot of traffic. I'm tempted to go in and reset the BIOS on all the machines to clear the BIOS passwords. I think the cases are locks though.
