I will tell you this: I don't think I've ever met anyone--military or civilian--who prefers a 92FS to a P226. I know I certainly don't, and I probably have put at least a couple thousand rounds through both types.

The Beretta isn't bad...it's just that the SIG fucking kills.

As far as the military tests, the Beretta and SIG were the only types to pass all the requirements. I think the Beretta was chosen due to it being cheaper (back then, contracts went to the "lowest bidder", not "best value".) A lot of special ops units have used SIGs all along.

If you really want a Beretta, go for it. They're good pistols, in my opinion. At least try out a SIG first, though...I think it's all but unanimously considered the superior weapon.

I've used both on a couple variants of the M4. The Eotech is nice, but I definitely prefer the ACOG. It's expensive, though.

I'll look into the SIG, but I found a 92fs the other day and held it, it fits my hand perfectly and feels awesome. I'll have to see how the SIG feels, right now it seems like this could be the deciding factor. It seems like it'll be a while before I buy anything though, fucking Cumberland county sucks with pistol purchase permits. How much trouble would I be in if I used my old (non-expired) driver's license to get a purchase permit in my old county?

Taurus PT 709 (7+1, 9mm) - with case, 2 mags, and I'll throw in 9mm snap-caps.

It has a very smooth trigger, adjustable rear sights, loaded chamber indicator, manual, wire brush, and a key lock built in to the slide as an option to store it safely. We ignored the safety lock and the actual safety, but they are there if you want them.




200 rounds fired. Some failures to feed during the break-in period when using lighter ammo.

This was to be the wife's carry gun. She loves it and hates to give it up. It's a tad too big for her to carry every day, so we're looking at downsizing to an LCP or Keltec or something similar.

It's tough for women to conceal stuff. And this is just over the size she is able to use.

$375, and I'll throw in 3 boxes of 9mm ammo.

For $400 flat, I'll also put in a Crossbreed Supertuck for the PT709.

That's a full carry system, plus 3 boxes of ammo, for equal or less than out-the-door price just for the gun locally.

^^ i've not come across that...do you have a link or something that talks about that supposed issue? is that with the recommended ammo or the hot?

the only widespread problem i've found is the firing pin (easy and cheap to replace, and definitely recommended)...seems like the rollers and spring might wear out over time, but those are also easy and cheap and to be expected

The issue seemed to be with hot ammo, where there are also some stovepipe issues. Sticking with the recommended ammo these are supposed to be alright.

Granted I think they look odd...but that is just me.

Am I the only one that would be at least slightly apprehensive about buying a gun for less than what just the ammo that comes with it is worth? I'd definitely give a thorough inspection before handing any money over. It's not like the ammo you're getting with it is something that you'll use anyway.

Henry H001 Lever .22S/L/LR. I will get some pics up tomorrow. This rifle was purchased last year by a neighbor of mine and he ran a 50rnd box of .22 through it. It is in perfect condition. I recently stripped it down, and cleaned it up, polished and waxed the wood, and oiled the metal. The only scar on the rifle is one tiny scuff on the right rear of the receiver.

He is asking $250 firm cash FTF in the Raleigh/Youngsville area.

it's a gun collector friend of my fiancée's brother...he seems to know his stuff and he tends to purchase guns at estate auctions, checks them out and cleans them up, and then resells the ones he doesn't want to collect

he has several CZ-52s and is selling it to me for what he paid...he says it's in amazing shape and he thinks it's a good gun for someone without experience or any real desire to do anything but plink

he's been a friend of their family for about 20 years...i'm not worried him trying to intentionally or knowingly sell me a gun that's going to blow up in my hand (accidents do happen, of course)

I want to buy a pistol soon, and other than a handful of trips to Personal Handgun and some backyard target practice growing up with the family's small arsenal, I don't really know much about them. So far from the minimal reading I've done I think i'd like a p226 or a 1911, but I really have little idea what all is out there.

Primary purpose is home/personal defense. After all, 2012 isn't far away. I have a sturdy old 1934 bolt-action .22 and eventually I'll be coming into a couple 12-gauges, more .22 rifles, and a couple smaller-caliber revolvers, but I want something a little more practical (and effective) in the event of something dire.

I'm a big guy capable of (and more-comfortably) handling a bigger handgun, I'm a decent shot for an average joe, and I've got the discipline and respect for it. I don't need something to win marksman comps, just a reliable sidearm to become familiar with over the years for personal protection. What do you recommend I look into?

^ I started off with a Ruger SR9 and I now have an HK USP. Best thing you can do is just go to the gun store and handle as many as you can and just pick the one that feels the best in your hand. P226's are great guns, and shoot very well. I want a Sig myself. 1911's are also great, but pretty opposite from a Sig. If you come to my little range at my house, you can shoot my SR9 and HK if you like.

Also, want to sell that .22?

i'd recommend 9mm. the biggest thing is being proficient and comfortable with your weapon and 9mm is cheap enough to practice a lot with yet still effective at eliminating a threat with protection rounds.

i really like the s&w m&p, sig p226, and sigpro but beyond a certain level of reliability its all about personal preference and how they feel in your hand.

^^^I have owned a P226, and currently own a nice 1911. They are my 2 favorite pistols (for "real world" pistols...not match pistols, hunting pistols, etc). They are very different, but I like them both a lot.

From what you describe that you want, P226 is the one. (unless you want to conceal it...then neither of these is a good choice).

A little tempted on the Steyr.

And while I am here...been out of the gun market for a LONGGGG time.
I am looking for a decent rifle that is reliable and not terribly expensive.
It will be a general purpose use. Some target practice. Maybe some hunting and home defense.
I would want it to be powerful enough to at least drop a deer.

What are some good suggestions?

and then just get a mossberg 500 for home defense. No sense in making a rifle your home defense weapon unless it was an AR-15 or similar. Then I would still rather not use a .223 to take down a deer. Sure you can do it but I would rather use a bigger caliber.

That's pretty much my plan, just looking for some info/advice from the experienced. And I might actually like to meet up with you and fire off a few rounds, last time I was at PHS (probably 2 years ago) they didn't have either of those available to check out. I was a little off on the .22 as I didn't have it in front of me for my post, but it's a Remington Model 41, all original and in amazing shape. It was my grandfather's though, so it's priceless...But you're more than welcome to put all the rounds through it you want!

you remind me of a point I forgot to mention in my original post...what should I be looking for as far as ammo availability? I hear it's hard to come across 9mm and .45 in stores as people tend to hoard those, and that .40 was slightly easier to find? I'd probably order online anyway but I'd like something that would be relatively common should shit hit the fan with gun control or, you know, the apocalypse

cool, good to hear I was on the right track, I'll definitely spend some time with both (and as many other models as I can get my hands on). I'm getting my CC, but ease of concealment isn't really a concern at this time. Other than side-by-side spec comparisons I can look up myself, what is different about the p226 and 1911, and what do you like specifically about each?

it would be cheaper than going to the range (all you gotta pay for is ammo) and it would be more fun


and I would agree with whoever said 9mm... it is cheap to practice with, and a self defense round will more than do the job. as for what to pick b/w the sig and a 1911... that really all depends on personal choice. Honestly, I'm not as big a fan of the sig as everyone else is. Next full sizer I get will more than likely be a S&W MP 9mm. You really just need to see how each gun feels in your hand (being a bigger dude like me, your opinion may vary from some of the smaller shooters on here, ie: can you get a good grip on a smaller handle, is the kick a gun offers not an issue for you whereas it might be for someone else, where is your hand placement, etc, etc...)

I have a Sig 226 9mm and love it. I have also handled and shot a Springfield 1911 numerous times.

In my experience, the main difference is that the P226 is a double stack and fits my hand better, while the 1911 is a single stack and is a little bit too narrow in my hands for my tastes.

I have NEVER had my P226 jam on me, after probably about 1500+ rounds...and I feed it all kinds of ammo. The only time it has jammed was when I let my friend's girlfriend fire it, and it jammed almost every other round on her...i'm guessing because she probably limp wristed it.

Size wise, they're probably about the same, other than thickness. The 1911 would probably be a little easier to conceal. I'm 5'10, 180lbs, and it's almost impossible for me to easily conceal my P226.
