i thought the movie had no real heart.
Depp was ok, but wasn't eccentric, just depressing.
The kids did a pretty good job, so no complaints there.
I just thought that overall, the movie didn't make me give a fuck about anything in it. i just sort of sat there like "um... ok"
Tim Burton should stay away from remakes. Regardless as to being "true to the source material," it still doesnt hold a candle to Gene Wilder's Wonka. 7/21/2005 3:10:52 AM |

Something about him basing Jack Sparrow on Keith Richards. 7/21/2005 9:53:48 PM |

i felt like a lot of the "ohhh-kay then... let's continue on" and "you should really stop mumbling" kind of lines could have been straight jim carrey.
my only major complaint was that the oompa-loompa song lyrics were kind of difficult to understand in a lot of places, because the music was so busy. however, i'm sure part of it was that i saw it in paris (happened to be there, and it's not out in england until july 29 so i went ahead and saw it in france), so the subtitles may have distracted me a bit from listening to the songs.

I think it's silly that so many people are trying to say this film is better or worse than the original, or to say that Depp is better or worse than Wilder as Wonka. They are two completely different approaches to the same problem and I think they both work very well. The two films can't really be compared to one another because they just don't have enough in common. 7/22/2005 10:34:21 AM |

I saw it this afternoon. To be honest, the whole time I was waiting for it to be over. I liked how they went into detail about his childhood, but other than that, I didn't care for Depp's character at all. I thought the oompa-loompa musical numbers belonged in a shitty drag club. There were too many deliberate jokes in there trying to get laughs. Most weren't even all that funny. 7/24/2005 9:10:49 PM |

no, it wasnt just you. i had a hard time as well. im not big into the overly flashy muscial numbers so i prefered the old style songs. then again i was glad they cut out extraneous songs (cuz i prefer my musicals on the stage and off the screen).
either way i agree with Syrinx for the most part and enjoyed both flicks.7/25/2005 9:37:06 AM |

Just saw the movie. I must say it was a huge disappointment. Charlie and his family was great. Hence, I thought it started out great. Introducing the children was also well done. As soon as it got to the factory it was a complete disaster. The songs were just plain terrible. They were loud, hard too follow, yet didn't say anything and were incredibly repetitive. The whole Wonka origin was just terrible.
Basically, the movie started out being about Charlie, then went all about Wonka. It seemed incredibly hurried from scene to scene. I won't see it again. 7/26/2005 7:03:59 PM |

i may be way off with this observation... but the kid who play augustus didnt look like a kid at all at some points. There is a point in his parent's store where he looked like a CGI "kid"... I know it was played by Philip Wiegratz, but it seems that some of the scenes at the very least had some CGI touch up. did anybody else notice that? or am I seeing things? 7/26/2005 8:14:58 PM |

All of the kids were touched up to make them more cartoon-like. I guess they were trying to make them more like illustrations in a book rather than just actors. 7/26/2005 8:52:27 PM |

You kinda have to expect that kind of stuff from the likes of Tim Burton. That's one of the things I like about his work; everything is just slightly surreal. 7/26/2005 9:14:08 PM |

I liked it. I'm glad it didn't try to remake the Gene Wilder version, which is probably what most people are expecting to see. The singing could have been supplemented with subtitles; I'm sure a lot of what was sung went right over peoples heads. I liked how all the characters in the chocolate factory were played by the same guy, though. I went to see it during the matinee, where there were probably like 10 other people in the theater, mostly little kids with their parents. Some of the jokes fell flat because noone in the theater laughed at them.

as a movie meant to entertain, i thought this was great, and i enjoyed myself alot....i would love to see it again, and possibly on the IMAX screen so i can really FEEL the boat ride
as a movie meant to remake a classic, i thought it sucked...tim burton is a morbid guy, k? (heh, i made a reference to the movie) *snicker*
before the movie, there was a preview for Burton's new flick, Corpse Bride....now THAT looks creepy, and the fact that it's a cartoon and for "kids" scares me even more 7/30/2005 11:23:41 PM |

Wait, who the fuck told you that Tim Burton was trying to remake the old movie? Because that's not AT ALL what's going on here.7/31/2005 11:57:13 AM |

it's not what's going on
but its what is accepted around most people as true
as more people see this as a remake, the more history will remember it as one. 7/31/2005 1:01:25 PM |
