Despite the 22's domination, Michigan was surprisingly good. I had low expectations, but there was a good amount of passing from 2nd on back throughout the race.

Agree.

Going to Sonoma, so I've watched my final DW race. Past time for him to go, but also seems kinda strange to consider.

Really? Didn't see much there and not too many people seem enthused. To my eyes, they dropped their "everyone hybrid" requirement in order to get Aston Martin to commit, and now Toyota finally has someone they can say they've defeated other than feckless privateers.

I miss the GT1 homologation days and cars like the mclaren f1, mercedes clk-gtr, jaguar xj 220 etc... and hope the new hypercar class brings back some of that excitement and brings some of the hypercars on the market into le mans

Eh, I'm a bit whatever on GT1s. They're not really production cars, their just prototypes. You look at for example the Toyota GT-One which is one of the most amazing racecars in history that never won anything, and the notion it was a production-based car was complete bullshit (one example is out there actually, for reverse you have to push it backward reportedly). "Hypercars" are about as much production as an F1 car.

Apparently the ACO dithered forever on them and that lost them Ford. Toyota threw down an ultimatum of "you will publish regulations now" and that's why what came out did.

Love sportscars but the manufacturer influence destroys the sport in some ways. Kind of wish it was like motorcycle racing (admittedly it's own big can of worms) where the manufacturers are there and throw their weight around, but there are way more participants. More participants also means simpler and/or cheaper race cars. Alonso is going to say he's a Le Mans 24 Hours winner to his grave and admittedly so, but he didn't beat anybody except for a team car that conveniently did not get fueled late in the race requiring it to circulate very slowly for 10 minutes.

Most of my time watching sportscar racing was the Audi went unchallenged and won every year era. The top class is just not that entertaining compared to the other classes save maybe 2 to 3 years out of 15.

And while we're still on the sports car topic the 68 Ford GT (GTE Pro 4th) and 85 Ford GT (GTE AM Winner) have both been disqualified for illegal fuel cells.

From my Unofficial Rules of Auto Racing:

Quote :
"9. If you allow manufacturers to set the rules to their desires, they will have freedom of design innovation and creativity, but will probably withdraw from the series within a few years because expenses went up so high (see every sportscar series ever and MotoGP circa 2011).

Sportscars

59. If you are watching a sportscar race and sit wondering how the car owner possibly got all the money to fund his car(s), chances are he is funding the race team through criminal means.
60. IMSA is an acronym for a sanctioning body of American sportscar racing. It has two meanings: the International Motor Sports Association, and the International Marijuana Smugglers’ Association.
61. Technical rules are set by whichever manufacturer can strong arm the sanctioning body best via money paid and threats to leave if they don’t get their way.
62. There is no such thing as purse money.
63. It is almost impossible for a privateer to defeat a factory car straight up. If it does happen, the factory car should probably withdraw from the sport within the year.
64. Privateers are the lifeblood of the sport though. If they disappear, so will the sportscar series a few years after the manufacturers inevitably pull out (see Rule 9, almost every FIA-sanctioned sportscar series ever, IMSA GTP, American Le Mans Series, the current ACO LMP1 class).
65. Following on from Rule 64, gentleman drivers, frowned upon elsewhere, are welcomed with open arms as the only way to pay the bills for a non-factory effort, and can lean on their co-driver to even win overall races here (see Milka Duno's career)."

good weekend:

win for watermelon boy at gateway

gragson puking after winning K&n

deegan won pole for k&n

i was entertained during cup race. i would do away with stages at road coursed but since thats not happening i like how stage points divides up the pit strategery, otherwise all the cars would pit 2 laps before end of stage

Hes trying to send a message...in practice....on a guy that wasnt even blocking him....when hes one of the more notorious blockers in the sport...at a track where you have to block to maintain a lead. I fully expect him to pick a lane saturday night if he gets to the front and not move side to side to keep himself at the front...right?

the 77 winning was the perfect cap to a shitshow of a superspeedway weekend. the only way it would've been better would have been if their piece of shit car had failed inspection and the 24 had got the double piss-in playoff berth.

From my Unofficial Rules of Auto Racing:

Quote :
"33. Daytona and Talladega are big clusterfucks of races that require the least driver talent to win at on the circuit. (See Michael Waltrip, Derrike Cope, Trevor Bayne, Bobby Hillin Jr., Jimmy Spencer, David Ragan, Greg Sacks, and Phil Parsons.)"

We can now add Justin Haley to that list, at least until he wins somewhere else.

I wanted to see Hamlin confronted by a lobster again.

The no-call on Erik Jones was as confounding as the black flag for Byron last week. Consistently inconsistent.

I don't think it's against the rules to drive over the commitment cone orange square and not go down pit road. It's only a violation if you don't get under it and then pit.

Some people don't like NHMS but it's really an old school-style give and take racetrack. Probably closest thing on the circuit to what Rockingham was.

https://racer.com/2019/07/23/insight-could-a-nascar-indycar-double-header-really-work/?utm_source=smg&utm_medium=wasabi&utm_content=home-hero

i'd love to see a double header with indy but the comments about length and temperatures are reasonable, if they do this they should make it a race weekend or do sprints or something. i didn't know watkins glen had imsa double headers with indy.

Pocono Doubleheader. Just another silly move by NASCAR. This will be a disaster, if it rains. Doubleheaders work in sports car racing because they have rain tires and they end the race when the clock runs out.
