The GRE isn't that bad, but I tutor for it so I could probably destroy it even more than when I took it the first time because I've worked through so many test prep books with people now.

looks like I will probably be unemployeed come July 15th. I currently work for a nonprofit doing a drop-out prevention program for hispanic students. We are grant funded, and DPI cut the funding for all programs next year due to budget cut. We've been looking for private funding, and have recieved some, but not enough to fund my position full time.

There is still some hope, however it is a long shot

Just entered the ranks! After 4+ years with this company, it was time for something new.

I got beat to the punch (had drafted my notice the same day I was released), but I'm not at all upset. I'm looking forward to whatever the next challenge will be.

How much does it take (in severance, stock buyback, or anything like that) to disqualify you from unemployment benefits? I've never looked in to it, but it seems like it could (in theory) end up screwing you over as long as you were receiving it.

I don't think there's a $ amount, it's based on the terms that you leave the company. If it's of your own volition, you can't claim unemployment. If you're left go not due to performance, you can get unemployment. If you are let go for performance, you can claim unemployment and the company has the ability to challenge your claim.

I am curious to hear what ya'll think about this:

So, this time last year my company had this mandatory overtime because the work load was terribly high. It was so high, they hired me to take some of the work. The line of work I do, it takes a while to get trained and trained properly (3-6 months to get started on the work). Well, I was hired at a higher salary then some of my colleagues, and I don't think it bothered them on a personal level; maybe professional, bu not the point. I was first interviewed by the multiple supervisors and they decided not to hire me. The guy above them hired me, and I think it pissed them off. I have better qualifications than the three of them put together too. From day 1, they made it out that I wasn't moving along with my training, but I was actually moving faster than other surgeons at my level, and to top it off, my work was much better quality. Anyways, I continued to get harassed by my managers. One guy [douchebag] threatened me saying something along the lines of "you better watch who you talk to or you will go down with me if I go down." I am like "whoa, I don't know where that came from." But to me that was borderline threatening and unprofessional. [Douchebag] was also just "demoted" shortly after I was hired and they didn't take him out of my department (which for my colleagues and I AND him probably would have been a good idea). This was a change that the majority of the department wanted. The guy was a complete idiot and didn't have the skills, knowledge or education to be qualified for a supervisor role. Oh I did forget to mention that his wife's uncle was the site manager and probably the reason he got in the position he did. So I turned this guy in to HR and the guy that hired me. The guy that hired me, laughed at me and said "Oh, I could never see [douchebag] doing anything like that." He then proceeded to say "I don't know why everyone in your department is complaining; I pay for their mortgages, rent, cars etc..." The longer I stay with this company, the more I realize that it isn't me that has issues, its the people in upper management. I can't seem to wrap my head around it at all. Well, come March, our business didn't pick up so all of our hours were cut. So they decided to try to cram 9 hours worth of work in an 8 hour day. No one was able to do this so people, me included, were staying late to finish work. Well, this left me with no time to practice on new procedures. Meanwhile, [Douchebag] was doing absolutely nothing and he was suppose to be getting certified on procedures. He wouldn't listen to anyone. And as business continued to slow down, his role began to change more into a tattle tale role where he would go around and TRY to find things wrong, take pictures and tell the supervisor. Of course, I never did anything wrong, followed SOPs to the "T" and helped my colleagues when they needed it. Well, since I was staying just a little late (on average 5 hours every two weeks), they decided to put me on probation and told me I needed to mentor. Well when the mentor "observed" me she said there was nothing wrong with what I was doing.

IS this common in companies to try to get rid of people?

Yea I do. We have to do certain procedures in a certain amount of time. :-/. I don't necessarily agree with it. In fact, I believe they turn the animals into manufactured goods and the surgeons into machines. Factory and animal surgery should not go together. I have keep telling myself that this is not forever.

But do companies try to engage reasons for firing someone instead of laying them off when the chips are down? Or am I dealing with a crappy company?

When a company lays you off then they have to pay a % of your unemployment compensation. So it's definitely preferable for them to fire instead of laying you off.

So I was under the impression that my UE benefits would not start paying until my severance runs out. My company gave me 6 weeks severance, and I disclosed this in my UE claim. However, I got a letter from the ESC yesterday explaining my benefit amount, as well as the form for direct deposit. The letter states that the benefit year begins 7/1/2012 (my first official day out of work). Does this mean that my UE benefits will start immediately?

Nope - you still have to wait until after your severance runs out or else they basically count it as double dipping. Granted, you could probably get away with it.

Am I the only one that's kind of shocked that there's such thing as an animal surgery factory/assembly line? What goes on here? Is it like a shelter drops off 100 animals to get fixed and you run them down the line, or medical research, or what? I am picturing something straight out of a horror movie...

^^ Well, your unemployment did start on that date so that's the start of your benefits year. So, technically, you should be filing every week and stating that you received $xxx.xx as your severance. Then, because you have now earned over the threshold, you will not get paid unemployment for that week.

They are paying me a lump sum of my entire severance, final salary, and unused vacation next Friday. In other words, my check next Friday will be huge, but it will be my final paycheck. Can I just state the whole thing next Sunday, then start drawing UE the next week?

Medical research. I used to work for a biotech company that had the same sort of thing but it wasn't nearly as awful/inhumane (to the animals and workers) as what he is describing.

Yeah that's why I quit. I don't mind doing the research if it's going to improve medical advances in humans or animals, but the line is drawn when a company cares more about numbers rather than the quality. And it's even worse when the company "discourages" bathroom and lunch breaks by assigning more work than can be accomplished in an 8 hour day. I got even more pissed when they were trying to tell me I shouldn't spend so much time making sure my animals were recovering from surgery ok. And it's no surprise to me that the "supervisors" have no more than a high school diploma and experience in surgery whatsoever. All I can say is if you have any ethics or morals, don't work for Charles River Labs. Glassdoor.com has all the reviews you need to want to stay away.

For me anyway, I think quitting a job you hate/despise and being unemployed for about 4 to 5 months is a great experience that I learned from.

^^ They occasionally post up jobs here and there. They mostly do poultry stuff in the RTP area. Not sure if that's what I want to do.
^ Yeah I am pretty happy about not working where I was.

The problem I now have is finding something I really want to do. Those positions are few and far in between and if they come up, you may have to go out of state to do it. I wouldn't mind that except my fiance' is not so flexible and he doesn't want me to leave. Right now I am doing some volunteer work in that field, hoping that they will maybe hire me, I don't know. But at least I can get some experience and when something comes up, I have something to put on my resume. I can't just sit on my bum and apply for jobs all day every day.

Embrex? Yeah I worked for Pfizer as a contractor. When they merged with Wyeth, they wanted to move me and my studies to Kalamazoo MI and they didn't want to hire me full time. That was a move I didn't want to commit to. But I did a combination of animal and bench type studies. I really enjoyed it. Now I think their cheddar is the devices department with the Inovoject. I liked the work, but it wasn't something I saw myself doing for the rest of my life.
