i'm technically employed, but on a contract-to-hire basis (they've taken a year to decide because they're foreign retards) and my private health insurance premium is astronomical, so i've been looking for a new job.

got a job offer from a new company today. on my birthday. lock up the Jameson! i'm coming for it.

The company I worked for is based in Eastern Europe. They used to be a communist nation. Whenever a decision needs to be made, they all meet for 5 hours, talk and talk, but never make decisions. They are all about communal decisions and no one wants to make a decision out of fear for making the wrong decision. I don't know if that is endemic in all foreign companies, but in my experience they are timid and cheap to a fault.

I've never seen a domestic company that didn't work that way.

Admittedly, the breadth of my exposure is not huge.

I got a job!!!

Accepted offer on Friday and I start next Monday. The work is very different from what I was doing, but even so I am still upgrading from where I was last year. Old job had next to no benefits and a 70 min commute. New job has higher salary, more vacation, full benefits, and a 12 min commute.

So, does CareerBuilder just send your email out to every spam service there is? I get lots of spam emails from non-local companies saying "we have extensively reviewed your resume!" and I should apply to positions with Aflac, shit like that.

But today I got a call to schedule an interview (mass scheduling I think) with a company that I didn't solicit, but is interviewing for a bunch of different positions. It's hard for me to say no to any interview, but is this shady? I'm supposed to get a confirmation email tonight and find out more.

I got a bunch of emails related to my last job. They all went the same way

"We saw your resume on ______ and think you'd be a great fit for a position as a _______. We need someone who has knowledge of _______ and judging by the fact that you're the only one who has worked at ______ you should be a great candidate. Could you send us a word version of your resume"

"Sure resume.docx"

"Great we'd like to set up an initial phone interview. What is a good time?"

"My schedule is pretty flexible, I can be contacted any time all week except for (1 hour block)"

NO RESPONSE

I had one at 10am and then one at 4pm. Then a guy called while I was in my morning interview to see if I could meet that day. I called him after I left the first interview and met him around 1.

It's rare that I have an interview go longer than 30, maybe 40 minutes. I know I've only had one interview in my life that was longer than an hour

Probably really depends on your field. I'm always interviewing for editing/writing positions that want you to do on-site grammar tests and other kinds of nonsense.

I still have a course paper to finish. If there's nobody hiring me, i still need to get it done. It prevents me from developing my career now. The course is Introduction to cognitive science. not very useful either.

Ugh, I've been looking for about 8-9 months and really looking hard for the past 2 months. I've gotten one interview, and one recommendation by a head hunter.

Ugh again.

Got a question. I started a job January 18th so I stopped collecting Unemployment. I am not happy at this job at all for various reasons, but I have been performing the duties of said job as required and have remained in good standing with the company. I am literally miserable going to work every day. Is it possible for me to quit this job and re-open my unemployment claim from my previous job?

it's not funny that you hate your job and you're miserable

it's funny you'd think that's even remotely within the realm of possibilities

I will at least give you props for working a shitty job rather than being a leech off the rest of us just because you dont like it. Of course if you pull what you asked about then you are a terrible human being and should never be allowed to collect unemployment again.

clearly, his aim should be to get fired from his current position, so he can collect unemployment from THEM

getting fired is trickier than most people think though, so good luck with that

Nah, I want to work. Being on unemployment is really depressing actually. And I have no problem working a job that I don't love, or even don't like all that much, until something better comes along. But this one is getting pretty unbearable. The fact that I am even asking the question should illustrate that. That being said, I guess I will get dressed for work.

^ this.

Yeah, but can't they twist that around and say they took that as me resigning my position? And even if they did terminate me for that, wouldn't that be grounds for them to deny my unemployment benefits?

I know this is a long shot but a friend of mine is looking to hire some college students for an event promotion 4/11 - 4/12 and possibly 4/13

pay is $10.00 an hour

the opportunity can turn into a internship with a local tech company

lemme know if you want more details

I thought you could only collect unemployment if you were laid off by the company. Quitting or being fired you were SOL on any unemployment.

thats the way it's supposed to work. But I've heard of the unemployment place siding on the employee's side quite a few times even when they quit. sometimes it'll involve something that happened while at work that the employee could say they didn't feel comfortable with or something and thats why they quit.

Now that is all hearsay from various employers I've talked to over the last couple of years. But my understanding is that they tend to err on the employee's side if at all possible.

With that being said, don't go quit your job and come looking for me when you don't get unemployment
