Why does it have to be military?
Why can't you just go somewhere else?

I've got a friend that joined at 31, and he's still active at 40. He said it's the best decision he has ever made. That being said, he's done 2 tours in Afghanistan, 1 in Kuwait, and had to live in Germany for a year. He's now stationed in TN. So if you don't mind moving around a lot, it could be a good option for you.

UNC failed to respond within two weeks so I don't have to worry about the headache of a hearing if they were going to try and contest my temporary position.

xpost with the garage

I've got a list of positions here at an automotive engineering consulting firm. They include things like computational fluid dynamics modeling, performance simulation, engine hardware system development, engine component design and release, engine calibration, and controls development. It's for both diesel and light duty gas engines. Experience with combustion development, turbos, and gasoline direct injection are definitely welcome.

The positions are located in Southeast Michigan so you or the interested person would have to be living there or willing to relocate (not sure about relocation packages). PM me and I can send you the list.

I got a letter in the mail yesterday stating that I have been selected to participate in the Reemployment and Eligibility Assessment (REA). I have to bring my resume and work search record to the ESC office next Wednesday. Participation is mandatory. Anyone else have to do this? I'm guessing it's a new program that McCrory put into place.

I assume they are going to look at my resume and see if they have any jobs that match it. I'm not sure what they mean by work search record. I've been applying to jobs online, so should I just print out the confirmation e-mails from jobs I have applied to?

You are supposed to be keeping a record of all the places you have applied which includes date, position title, and outcome of application (interveiw, no response etc). This record needs to be kept up to a year after you get a job cause ESC can ask for it anytime up to a year to make sure you are really looking for work

About to quit my job and become unemployed (tired of being asked to do dangerous and unethical things then getting yelled at for refusing to ruin my career for this idiot).

Don't quit. If no one in your company will listen to you, file a formal complaint with the labor board.

I was never told that by anyone at the ESC, but I have taken your advice and downloaded the document. I went back and filled it in for the past month with jobs that I applied to online, hopefully that'll be good enough.

Make sure you BCC anything you e-mail at work to your personal e-mail address. This seriously helped me with a wrongful termination case a few years ago.

But if her boss doesn't do anything, file a complaint with the labor board. Whatever you do, don't quit.

Anyone live in Charlotte and need a job? I'm moving to Denver and they're trying to replace me but having difficulty. Ideally we're looking for someone with decent SQL knowledge (postgres, greenplum, MPP databases ideally) but also with client facing deliverable / business analyst skills.

question that has probably already been covered in here many pages back BUT....

when employers ask for a resume and cover letter to be sent through e-mail ... do you send the cover letter as an attachment or as the body of the email?

^ I have an electronic version of my resume that includes the cover letter on the front page. First page is the cover letter, next 2 pages is the resume. If I didn't have that, I would include the cover letter as a separate attachment. I just think it's a little more professional than putting it in the body of the e-mail.

Also, follow up on this:
Quote :
"I got a letter in the mail yesterday stating that I have been selected to participate in the Reemployment and Eligibility Assessment (REA). Had my meeting today for the REA. It was pretty much a joke. There were about 6 of us in a room and a guy talked to us about free continuing education programs. I had to fill out some paperwork for my file that the lady told me "Don't put too much thought into it, the government just requires us to have it in your file." They didn't look at my resume or my work search record. The only interesting part was one of the ladies in there kind of flipped out because she was chosen for the program and none of her other coworkers that got laid off were chosen. She said she felt like she was singled out.

If you're collecting unemployment, the ESC has a really helpful site set up to look for jobs.

http://www.ncworks.gov

I just found out about it today during my follow-up with my REA rep. It's much easier to use than any of the other job boards, with no spam. Plus there are several jobs on there that don't post online, but will post through the ESC.

Temporarily unemployed starting next Thurs, but the following Monday I start my new job in Winston Salem (which is also the day of my 30th birthday) ! Getting paid a lot more to do more or less the same thing I'm doing now. Plus, with my gf's substantial raise, we can start saving a good amount of money while also renting an apartment downtown.

my federal contract ends on 9/11 but there's a slight chance of hire or extension, but it's going to come down to the wire. Have a job interview with NYU coming up.

If none of that pans out, I will be unemployed

^Nice resource, hadn't seen that before. My girlfriend will make use of it.

I'm not unemployed but I don't have a full-time job... I have a mish-mash of contract jobs. I really need to just suck it up and take ANY job I can get my foot in the door at.
