Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Idle Time!
What Is It? Essentially [link]http://folding.stanford.edu" target="blank">Folding@Home uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor.
The North Carolina State University Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the Top 100 teams in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the support of anyone who would like to help.
All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home on it with great results.
How can I Help? Download and install the software appropriate for your OS (Windows/Linux/Mac). For dual/quad core computers, be sure you install the SMP client. It will get you and the NCSU team far more points than the traditional client. Whichever client you choose, we recommend running the Folding@Home client as a service. The client will run in the background without notification, and will release CPU resources as needed since it runs at the lowest priority. The NCSU Team Number is 59. The SMP clients are currently located at: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther We recommend the 5.91 version.
Visit the team homepage for detailed installation instructions
Windows Computers We recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team far more points than the standard console client In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions. Mac and Linux Computers There are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the regular console clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.
Playstation 3 PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!
The more computers and PS3s you run the clients on, the more points your username and the NCSU team earns! Install as many clients as you can and watch your username/team progress at the stats page

its gotta be the work units. your PPD will fluctuate based on what WU you're crunching.4/22/2008 4:14:23 PM |

if you catch it early enough in the first frame or so, just delete your work folder and the queue.dat file and restart the client it may/may not go find another WU... but the points aren't really what it's about lol 4/22/2008 6:06:29 PM |

just let it be, a new workunit will be downloaded eventually. i've seen it take 2-3 hours sometimes to get a new workunit, and wouldn't be surprised if it took longer, esp during a time when stanford is having server issues like today 4/23/2008 7:02:14 PM |

Update on folding stats...
http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2300#p20483
Quote : | "Mitsimonsta wrote:The problem is the new small units that are overloading everything. P4's at very mild clocks are getting through up to 10 of these per day.
Each unit returned needs to be placed into the stats DB, so with the number of returned workunits going through the roof this means the stats updates are slowed as 5x the amount of entries need to fight to get into the stats DB." |
Quote : | "This is precisely the problem. I had hoped that recent fixes there would have done the trick. Since it hasn't, I'm going to take more strong action today (potentially stopping new assigns there) until this can get under control.
The good news is that the stats are all there, it's just taking 5x longer to get them inputted. Once we get those new projects back to the right size, this should go back to normal.

i'm folding on a T9300...the only differences between the two are 100mhz CPU and the bus/core ratio (i don't actually know what this means...the T9300 is 12.5 and the T9500 is 13...i assume it's just the ratio between CPU and bus speeds and therefore contributes nothing in terms of performance, just conveys information)
how do i tell how many points i'm getting with this machine?

^ okay, so i installed it and it's saying that my PPD is 1537.55, but i have no idea how that works - is that just what it's recorded in this current work unit (which i started at 11:30am this morning and is now 20% finished)? or is that the estimated PPD based on what's completed thus far?
i usually only run the FAH client on the laptop during the day while i'm at work (roughly 8 hours) when i'm not using and and when i can prop it up so that the processor fan has plenty of air (it blows out the back and out the bottom)...other times, i'm on battery and would rather minimize the heat and processor usage
if i need to wait for it to finish (ETA 21h55m), i'll let you know when it's done 5/1/2008 5:21:46 PM |

i don't think youll be able to finish SMP work units in time if you only run it 8hrs per day. the final deadlines for them are 4 days from when you download them. i run the SMP client 24X7 on 3 laptops. the only time the clients are turned off is the rare case when I have to run it on battery. you can configure the client so it does turns the client on and off depending if you're plugged in too...it may do it by default, i'm not sure.5/2/2008 8:54:51 AM |

^ hmmm...i didn't think about that
i know i finish units sometimes, because if i work on the laptop at night, i'll leave it plugged in and run folding at night...how can i tell how often i'm actually finishing the work units i take on? 5/2/2008 10:17:58 AM |
synapse play so hard 60938 Posts user info edit post |
just keep an eye on FahMon...it displays the log files if u tell it to. you can see when you complete work units, and how long until your current WU will take...and the deadline for it.
but yeah if the only time you stop it from folding is a few hours a day (when you get home from work or whatever) you should be fine. 5/2/2008 10:31:19 AM |

I think some of the increase in production is just due to different WUs lately. Normally I get 135PPD on a P4 3.2 and with some of the new WUs its closer to 230 PPD. 5/5/2008 10:12:42 PM |

that might be a part of it, but I think most of it is our top 3 producers have all increased production their numbers.
chemp is up to over 15k PPD...from like 10-11 i think i'm up to well over 6kppd from around 5 j33pownr is up to over 5k ppd from like 1 (but he was 4-5 about a month ago..just took a few weeks off)
in fact ive noticed the smp workunits are earning less points points than they used to. the 1760-pt ones are the best, but im getting more and more 1440,1763, and 2144 workunits which are earning less than the 1760pt ones we used to get exclusively 5/5/2008 11:27:29 PM |
