I think NOT calling a timeout right away was fine ... maybe they could've caught Duke off guard ... but once Duke set their defense, there's no reason to not call a timeout and design a play.

I bet Steve Robinson coaching wins that game last night. Easy game plan. Keep feeding the post. Johnson was unstoppable and Meeks, Hicks, and Jackson (the other tall guys that play a lot) were the only guys getting any buckets for UNC. Instead, they let Berry and Paige jack up shots left and right.

Roy is maybe an average coach. His two natty's were with teams that were absolutely loaded and head and shoulders better than any other team in college basketball at the time. He's squandered some great talent during his career at Kansas and UNC. Dude is a fucking hack.

Its a bad lost and here's why. They have one of the most stacked teams in the nation. They have Johnson, Meeks, and Hicks for bigs for one. They have two veterans in Johnson and Paige, and they have several juniors. Duke has like one senior in Plumlee and their stars are either mostly freshmen and a sophomore. UNC had a significant advantage in talent, experience, and depth. Paige for some reason has had a bad season and regressed significantly. His poor shooting rivals Celebs and Rowan.

They shouldn't have lost, but it's not a bad loss. But there are people saying "We'll never win anything as long as Roy is the coach!!!11" ignoring that they've won twice with Roy, only 6 years ago.

Only way Duke should have won that game last night is if they were shooting lights out from three and UNC laid an egg on offense.

Neither happened. UNC shot better overall than Duke from the field (43 to 41.5%) and Duke only shot 37% from three (respectable...but definitely not lights out). UNC outrebounded Duke 44-29!!

Duke did change their defensive strategy in that they focused on denying the ball to the post...but UNC did nothing to combat that. Johnson and Meeks could have still gotten post position with the help of screens or even trying to move around...but they didn't even try! They just stood there while Paige/Berry/Pinson/Britt dribbled around the arc and either jacked up shots or had unsuccessful drives to the basket. I think UNC got most of their points in the final 10-15 minutes off of offensive rebounds, loose balls, and the occasional drive and dish.

I know everyone is overreacting, but that was probably one of the worst coaching performances I've seen in a high profile game like this.

^^ When you're at the bottom of the ACC then losing to a top-20 team is not bad. However, when you're one of the most stacked teams in the nation going against your rival that has had one of the most mediocre teams they had in a while plus they had two injured players and you still managed to lose at home? Maybe bad is not the best word, but its certainly embarrassing and should not had happen.

I actually thought UNC was a favorite to win the ACC tournament and national championship this year. It could still happen, but this is the team that was losing like 90% of the game to Boston College until they squeaked out a win at the end. I REPEAT to BOSTON COLLEGE.

^that's definitely something to consider. and for beejay...dude's spent like 3 years simply trying to get to playing weight. doubt he's really had a ton of time to actually get better at basketball when he's been spending most of his time just trying to lose weight. and part of that, i wonder, may be a motivation issue for beejay.

nah, i don't see Roy retiring till the NCAA stuff (and any penalties) are over. he seems like the kinda coach that is so enamored with the university and the notion that he's integral to the future sustainability and success of the basketball program and university that he takes on himself to "see the university through its most trying time" or some shit like that. like, he thinks this is all part of his legacy and he's continuing the legacy Dean started...some holier than thou sounding bullshit...but I think he really believes it all.

whenever he retires he'll hang his hat on seeing the NCAA shit through, leaving UNC in a better position than it was before, and being a part of the "solution".
