I got to sit in on the NCSU Citizen Police Academy back in 2007, it was pretty eye opening and cool.

I think SROs should be officers that are less rigid and hard than the average cop. Being able to exhibit warmth and understanding with students would go a long way to dissolving the perception by many that cops are all one bad look away from treating you like an insurgent.

My interaction with officers is a lot different now and I've begun to see that too few officers understand the importance of community involvement. Every time I interact with an officer and my son, I feel like he/she is unapproachable. They give their canned responses, hand him a sticker and then move on, even when its a community involvement event like the state fair or a class visit. They don't get on his level, they don't engage with him as a person, they just stand straight as a board with the bullet-proof barrel chests.
To me and my son, officers can't drop that military style discipline, they come off like robocop and its intimidating to everyone. Its at the point now where people don't want to engage with LEOs unless they absolutely have to, and that seems like a really bad direction to be heading.

it depends on .... yeah a bunch of details, like area or city for one. When I lived in Austin, most cops were cool as shit and mega helpful with random pedestrian stuff. But then in Florida, most of my underage friends would go to where the off duty cops were fishing and get beer from them for free.

How do shootings like this continue to happen? At some point all cops are going to have to assume they are being filmed by someone with the massive amount of camera phones out there now. Even if you are still a racist asshole you would think they would learn that more than likely I am being filmed so I cant just shoot someone and make up some story like I used to be able to.

Good question. Although Eric Gardner's death was caught on camera, and not much happened to the cop who strangled the life out of him. Nothing stopped those cops from making up a story about Gardner resisting arrest, necessitating an "arm bar" across his neck shaped chest. In fact, the police then started targeting the camera man.

That's the saddest part to me.

At least we have video in some of these cases these days, more dash cams (how the fuck are those not mandated), and the hope of body cameras, but like ^ said, sometimes video doesn't ensure justice.

I mean maybe the guy had a gun and maybe he pointed it at someone before the video started rolling, but I didn't see anything I would consider aggressive in the actual video. If he had a gun and police felt he was dangerous and wasn't getting rid of the weapon maybe you could semi justify the first shots that put him on the ground crawling but at that point unless he raises a gun and points it at someone all the additional shots are just to kill the guy for no reason.

Eric Garnder did resist arrest.

Unless you're referring to when he was on the ground and clearly did comply and stop resisting, which is where there was clearly excessive force/lack of medical aid. From the video and facts I don't think it is another clear case of murder, but definitely excessive force with the choke so fortunately his family got paid a settlement.

"Last year, an alleged “known gang member” was shot and killed by police in Los Angeles. But a video released on Friday by OC Weekly shows 23-year-old Noel Aguilar was hit in the back by two Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputies, who ignored his pleas for help as he lay dying.
The deputies claimed Aguilar, who authorities tried to blame for the incident, shot one of them in the stomach, but officials revealed that the deputy’s gun wound came from his partner’s gun.
“[O]n Thursday, officials said the deputy was actually hit by a round from his partner’s gun as they tried to arrest Aguilar near 69th Way and Long Beach Boulevard shortly before 10 a.m.,” the L.A. Times reported in June 2014.
“The first shot is not justified because the victim is very vulnerable, he’s on his side,” Angel Carrazco, an attorney representing Aguilar’s family, told the OC Weekly. “The other three shots from the back, every single one of those is unjustified. For me, it seems like it’s murder.”
Shortly before the video was released, CNN reported that accidental discharges from the LASD’s new Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm went up by over 500 percent in just two years — from 3 incidents in 2012 to 19 in 2014.
“We conclude that the current training program is insufficient to overcome old habits learned on other handguns,” a 52-page report released by the Office of Inspector General County of Los Angeles states. “As a result, many deputies appear to be to undertrained for the weapon they are using.”"

I blame officer 2 more than officer 1 I am sure getting shot in a struggle you are gonna assume it was the suspect not your partner. Shooting the guy in the back is pretty shitty but at that point he had heard a second shot fired, again by his partner, and having already been shot you could make a slight argument that he feared for his life at that point and wasnt thinking straight.

Watching it again I see officer 1 takes the gun from the guy early on and puts it in his waistband. The same gun he later takes out and places under the guy. So I guess it was the guys gun but still seems odd.

Regarding the video of the girl getting pulled out of her chair that everyone flipped shit over ITT...

Here is what happens when you don't have authority figures at school and when rules aren't enforced. (Surprise surprise you don't see this on HuffPost or ThinkProgress).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLP1GHpijpk

I'm sure this video would have gone viral if perhaps a white student was victimizing the black teacher, or if an evil racist white cop arrested the asshole in this video, but since it doesn't fit the narrative it doesn't go viral.

We don't need cops in schools though right! That is the "militarization of schools" and getting physical with these precious little snowflakes is abuse! We should teach them not to respect rules, authority, and police, because that will set them up for success! Why take advantage of a free education when those "oppressive" classroom rules are there! You don't have to follow the rules, you're a victim! #Liberalism #Pussification #IStandWiththeNarrative

Damn, was that a classroom or a zoo? I just insulted zoos

I would rather work as an elephant dung shoveler in a zoo for half the pay than teach in such a school

Poor teacher, I felt empathetically terrible for her during the whole video

That's clearly a substitute teacher, and you got to feel for those five students that are just sitting around the room in silence while those three run amok. I'm sure they love school.

But students like that need to be accommodated and catered to, right TWW social justice warriors?

Students don't need to listen to rules/teachers/authority if the races align to the victim narrative from HuffPost.

Evil racist cops abusing our kids... the "militarization" of our schools... THINK OF THE CHILDREN

"Parker testified that he was afraid Patel had a hidden weapon he was reaching for, and maintains he did not tackle the man, but rather lost his balance and fell.
But Police Chief Larry Muncey said at the time that Parker’s actions were not justified, and Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) issued a formal apology to the Indian government for the incident. Parker was fired from the police force and arrested for assault.
Yet Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala threw out the case late Wednesday, saying in a 92-page opinion that federal prosecutors had tried and failed over the course of two trials last year to secure a conviction. While calling what happened a “tragedy,” she seemed to suggest Patel was responsible in part for the rough treatment he received, noting in her ruling that Patel committed a misdemeanor by leaving his home without identification, and noting the grandfather should have known some basic English because it was not his first visit to the United States."

Technically, anything wider than 256 mm (~10.1 in) is a boulder. A piece of granite of the minimum size would weigh about 52.5 lbs.
