Fun game at times to watch. Tyler was better than expected. TDT was a bit better than last year. Seemed to be more in synch with the offense. Vandy is seemingly always out of position for the board or the block which makes him basically useless. If we are forced to give him or TDT significant minutes in big games, it will be ugly. Purvis attacks the basket violently. Love it when he was a little more in control. Seemed to force it a bit. TJ warren is just so smooth. Feel almost as comfortable that something good is going to happen when he has the ball as I do with zo. 11/4/2012 7:43:26 AM |

Purvis reminds me of a young D Wade the way he attacks the lane full speed when there is a crease. 11/4/2012 7:52:52 AM |

Tyler lewis was awful...
For as much crap as Javi and AJ got, let's at least be consistent.
4 turnovers in 18 minutes vs Belmont Abbey? What exactly did he look good doing? 11/4/2012 8:44:55 AM |

Yeah if you watched the game, the turnovers were mostly just fucking around and one where Wood wasn't paying attention. I mean the second half they were doing all sorts of globetrotter stuff just for fun and he played most of the second half. He was great out there. Real scrappy on defense although out of control on a couple of threes he got faked out on. I was impressed.
But Lewis aside, Warren stole the show and has my eye for top freshman. 11/4/2012 10:09:23 AM |

I didn't say he was a star. I said he looked better than I expected which to me means he didn't look totally out of place. If he can fulfill the Alex Johnson role this year, I would be thrilled. I think he can do that. He played decent defense, he hit a three and he played within himself mostly. I wouldn't say his turnovers were messing around so much as they were a product of the fast tempo. We were hardly ever in a traditional half court set throughout the game and if we were, it was so short as purvis, zo, and warren (even howell and leslie did some) were taking it to the hole. I'd be surprised if the shot clock even got to 20 when we had the ball.11/4/2012 10:34:33 AM |

Didn't watch or listen to the game, but it's kinda disappointing, although not unexpected, that De Thaey and Vandy failed to impress. Foul trouble will definitely cost us a handful of wins this year, just like last year. Guys will have to be smart and not take unnecessary fouls on defense. Howell and Leslie especially will have to understand that its ok to give up some uncontested baskets if it means they stay out of foul trouble.

still too early to write them off, I think tdt can give us a solid 5-8 minutes...anything more than that and we're asking for trouble. gott said warren is going to be playing both wing and post this year, only layer he's asking to learn both positions 11/4/2012 11:27:32 AM |

^ good move by Gott.
Vandy can steal a few minutes here and there against the right matchups, but TDT is not capable of that. The guy couldn't give Wake Forest quality minutes. 11/4/2012 11:32:20 AM |

I hope TDT and/or TBVD are able to develop like Painter did last year. Early in the season, Painter was painful to watch, but found a positive role on the team over the second half of the year. When we had TDT and TBVD both on the court in the second half, Belmont-Abbey was getting everything they wanted inside. I think it's mostly due to a lack of basketball IQ and awareness, and is not fixed by TDT lifting weights in the off season. Hopefully that will be the only time all year that they will ever be on the court at the same time... minus garbage minutes in a 20+ pt win. 11/4/2012 12:02:32 PM |

Trouble is Vandenburg always seems to be two steps out of position from where he should be to make a block, rebound, or screen. He also does things like bring his man to CJ Leslie's block. Not sure how his basketball IQ makes him preferable to TDT, but his height could make him a servicable situational player.
I think we play a fairly small lineup, rotating CJL, Howell, and Warren in the post, with limited minutes to TDT and Vandenburg dictated by foul trouble and matchups. They will be in the rotation early in the year though, and will have the opportunity to develop and earn minutes.
TDT needs to be more patient looking for his shot, and more than anything calm down. He has a nice jump shot in warmups but seems to get overexcited in games.

Right, but Vandenburg seems to not know when to move his feet to be in better position for a rebound or block (while not committing an unnecessary foul). There were ample opportunities for him to take one step and contest a shot yesterday, but he didn't move his feet and their guards got an easy layup. 11/4/2012 1:56:48 PM |

Would it do any good to remind everyone that this was our first exhibition game? And yo suggest to yeall that it may be a little premature to predict if a freshman lewis will be as good as a senior javi, or if TDT and Vandy will be serviceable this year, and the rest of their careers? 11/4/2012 4:49:40 PM |

Quote : | "6. Which ACC school has the best home-court advantage and why? LL: When our arena at Florida State is sold out it is very hard to come into Tallahassee and escape with a win. Other than Florida State, Duke, North Carolina, Maryland, NC State, and Clemson have the best home court advantages, in that order. Clemson may seem odd to some because they don't always sell-out, but their arena is in the middle of nowhere… pretty much on a farm, and they yell loud. Maryland is the only place in the ACC I've never won a game in so that's why they're on the list, and NC State does that annoying wolf call all game that really gets old. Their fans are pretty obnoxious too. Duke and Carolina are the obvious best home court advantages, because they both sell-out and have great cheers and chants all game." |

Scott Wood only shot 2-7 from 3. Damn, i thought he was going to be good shooter this year. Oh well.
Lorenzo Brown only had 4 assists against Belmont Abbey? But he averaged 6.3 last year. What's with the decline in his performance? I thought he was going to be a good point guard this year. Oh well. 11/5/2012 1:38:03 PM |

In other parts of the country, schools such as Michigan, UNLV and North Carolina State have realistic hopes of a return to the Final Four. Rick Pitino, Larry Brown, Danny Manning and Johnny Dawkins should find their way into the headlines throughout the season, too.
No, this isn't the late 1980s." |
Quote : | "NC STATE WOLFPACK
Why they loved the late '80s: Jim Valvano racing across the court to celebrate NC State's 1983 NCAA title is one of the most famous images in college basketball history. But the fun didn't end there. The Wolfpack reached the Elite Eight in 1985 and 1986 thanks to players such as Vinny Del Negro. One year later, NC State won the ACC tournament -- a feat the program hasn't repeated since. Valvano's squad also captured the league's regular-season title in 1988-89 behind Rodney Monroe, Tom Gugliotta and Chris Corchiani. The Pack hasn't won one since.
Why they'll love this season: NC State squeaked into the NCAA tournament last spring and capitalized by advancing to the Sweet 16, nearly upsetting Kansas. Virtually every key player from that team returns, including future NBA draft picks C.J. Leslie and Lorenzo Brown. Second-year coach Mark Gottfried signed one of the country's top recruiting classes, led by guard Rodney Purvis. As a result, State is the ACC preseason favorite for the first time in nearly 40 years." |

Maybe this has been discussed, but what are everyone's realistic expectations for this season?
I know I'm hyped as shit right now, but it also keeps swimming around in my mind that we're still NC State. I figure, I'll be really happy with a 23-win regular season. Allows us to split the series with Duke and UNC, and drop a few more peppered throughout the season.
I'd be ecstatic for a 25-win regular season, but is this unrealistic? I don't know shit about how good our team ACTUALLY is. I just know what everyone expects. 11/5/2012 9:37:58 PM |
simonn best gottfriend 28968 Posts user info edit post |
you'd be "really happy" with a 3 win improvement over last season? we barely have any significant turnover from last year to this year, unlike the teams ahead of us last season. not to mention that last year was a first year under a new coach and in a new system. also not to mention our easier out of conference slate this season. shit, you could get three extra wins just by the schedule alone.
i realistically expect us to win the acc regular season.
tournaments you can't say anything about, b/c single elimination can have a lot of crazy outcomes, but this is the most talented and experienced group in the acc. there's no reason to try to speculate how many wins or how we'll do against duke/unc, but if this team doesn't win the acc it'll either be b/c gottfried and his staff did a bad job (as in, worse than last year) or someone sustained a long term injury.] 11/5/2012 9:41:42 PM |
