you also still have to be able to coach the players

obviously he's still a great coach. but his reputation has been tarnished badly at this point. let's not act like this is the first scandal of his.
what could save his legacy and reputation would be if there's some insane fallout with dozens other coaches and schools and the scandal as a whole overshadows him specifically in it. 9/28/2017 3:01:27 PM |

I’m not arguing that it isn’t part of his legacy, just that it doesn’t destroy it

I mean if you still think Lance Armstrong is a hero, I could see why you'd think Patino would get a pass and deserves to be remembered for all the great stuff he did. Otherwise, nah. 9/28/2017 3:25:00 PM |

The schools that are better at this stuff know that there were too many people involved here. They have one guy probably that handles all this and that one guy knows if anything were to ever happen he was acting as a lone wolf and no one knew anything. Clearly these other guys got sloppy and it caught up to them as soon as one person snitched. 9/28/2017 3:38:35 PM |

Joe Pa wasn't a pedophile, he was a guy that didn't fire his friend for being a pedophile. And no, I'm not comparing the two, I'm comparing who coaches who have damaged reputations because of controversy, of which they are both now a part. 9/28/2017 3:50:31 PM |

You're still not getting it. Athletes and coaches are capable of doing extraordinary things like winning multiple titles, breaking records, etc. But once one of them gets caught up doing shady stuff like doping, recruiting violations, point shaving, gambling, etc people tend to remember them for getting caught doing something unethical/shady vs. achieving greatness. You could say that's 'unfair', but that's about it.
You're arguing that his 'legacy' doesn't deserve to be tarnished, because despite being a slimeball, he still coached teams to multiple titles. I'm saying that this type of opinion tends to get shot down pretty quickly, because although cheating is an unsavory part of sports, most people are bothered when cheaters get caught red handed. It's the principle of the matter.
Personally, I don't really give a fuck about Patino, but he's got much bigger things to worry about than preserving his legacy now that the FBI is involved.9/28/2017 4:51:48 PM |

Ah, so you don't have an argument then. His name is being dragged through the mud and it will only get worse. Glad we cleared that up.
And the Armstrong example makes perfect sense if you get the concept that cheating (even it can occur in a variety of different ways, and some penalty are harsher than others) is still cheating, and most people have a problem with it. 9/28/2017 5:56:52 PM |

when was Rick Pitino ever held in the same regard as Lance Armstrong?
the original point that was being discussed is Pintino’s legacy being destroyed. it’s not destroyed, and this is now part of said legacy
to argue that his legacy is now destroyed is to be under the assumption that he’s the only coach to have ever been a part of what he’s been accused of doing and that he was pure before any of this broke

he’ll forever be known as an all-time great coach who was fired over a pay-to-play scandal
the scandal doesn’t outweigh his coaching achievements, therefore doesn’t destroy his legacy
all of which is part of his legacy 9/28/2017 6:23:37 PM |

cool, you restated exactly the same opinion you had in the first place using slightly different words, but it's still an unpopular one- especially if you read how the media is reacting right now.
Time will tell how he will be remembered, but if he winds up in prison, my guess is that people remember why he got there before all of his coaching achievements. Kinda like Lance Armstrong is being remembered these days.9/28/2017 6:31:40 PM |

So I know you're a lawyer, but does the "I may have done X illegal thing, but I'm still awesome at doing Y, and I should be remembered more for Y than X!" defense fly in legal court?
Pretty sure it doesn't fly in the court of public opinion, but hey, I'm not a lawyer for either.
